I love grappling hooks in games, but I am a little apprehensive about how it fits in Destiny.

Maybe not. Destiny is kind of unique in that our characters have such mad hops and mobility. Master Chief can only jump a measly 10 feet, so a constant grapple would greatly help him.

Considering Destiny grapple is powered by darkness/light, as like all abilities, probably has a decent cooldown. The trailer shows a hunter diving down with a power slam, probably similar to the stasis dive. The grapple may just be like a dodge ability or something.

I think they’ve confirmed the grapple replaces your grenade ability. Not sure if that is optional or if Strand just doesn’t have grenades.

Probably one of those subclass elements or spindrals or whatever they're called.
