https://thegamepost.com/massive-90gb-halo-leak-dev-builds-internal-docs-tools-bungie/
tl;dr summary:
* Tons of unreleased Halo dev builds have leaked, totaling over 90 GB.
* Also includes dev tools and internal design documents.
* Halo Studios is pissed and has ended the Digsite program as a direct response, even though all indications show that they had nothing to do with it. (Although Digsite was already dying anyway.)
I have not downloaded the leak myself and am not providing any download links here.
That. Is. WILD.

I am absolutely stunned. I can't help but wonder who did this, and why?

I'd be mad too if the only stuff fans wanted to play was old shit you had nothing to do with, and I could no longer sell it.

It's sad that they've been so flippant about the Digsite project, though, which was garnering a lot of interest in the Halo community and keeping the franchise alive during a time when the studio itself is busy licking its wounds and restructuring for the future. Like, they really couldn't be bothered to pay those guys? Not even on a limited-term contract basis?
I'm not as anti-343 as others here, but at this point it is hard to be optimistic. Time and time again, they refuse to invest in the things that work and show potential. They're too busy chasing trends and continually reinventing the brand.
Halo 4 had an intriguing, if somewhat impenetrable story. I was curious to see where it was going to go next. The character work between Master Chief and Cortana particularly was, in my opinion, a high point of the franchise. That shit just worked.
So what did they do? They discarded all of it in the next game and turned Cortana into a villain. Brand new plot too.
Then they discarded that, put Evil Cortana on a bus, and chased another brand new plot in Infinite.
It's just sad to me because they have done shit that works, so it's not like they're without talent whatsoever. There is great potential within the walls of that studio. It's not even limited to campaign; the gameplay in some of these 343 titles has been tremendous. I still think Halo 5's multiplayer is more fun than Reach's.
The problem is that it never goes anywhere. Nothing ever gets developed. Nothing ever gets resolved. It's continuous reinvention without purpose or authorial voice.
^turnover...

which leads to a lack of an artistic vision, or at least an inconsistent one.
Agreed

Nothing had time to develop traction.

Broadening this out from Halo, creating good second trilogies from massive IPs is challenging. My guess is an extended series needs one authorial voice to work well.

...or correct. I don't know how accurate these numbers are, but.
Steam Charts for Halo Infinite show 30 day average players at 2,185

Master Chief Collection at 3,845

A 20 year old leak comes out and people seem to be excited about it? That's a pretty big punch to the modern gut.

Note to Microsoft: Just invest in the game that's doing well. Make more shit for that game.
