Games where one thing ruins an otherwise cool experience (Gaming)

I tried playing Echoes of Wisdom.

The game seems pretty neat, but HOLY SHIT the interface is so bad, it literally made me put the game down forever.

For context the game is about using 'echoes' which are summoned enemies or objects. You can summon enemies to fight other enemies, use objects to climb cliffs or gaps, set traps, etc. You can attach yourself to objects to get around; for instance create a spider that climbs walls, attach yourself, and you'll climb along with it.

It would be cool, but you get dozens of echoes, and to choose which one you use you have to go through A SINGLE MENU THAT'S A LINEAR LINE. Like, you literally have to scroll through dozens of entries to switch echoes. There are no shortcuts. No wheel system grouping by type to quickly find what you want. Nope, scroll through every one. And echoes are your primary tool, so you're constantly switching them!

It's mind boggling that such an important system has THE most shitty implementation of an interface you could possibly imagine. Seriously, you probably COULD NOT come up with something worse and more frustrating.

And so, one idiotic decision ruined the game and I'll never play it again.

What games were ruined for any of you with one dumb thing that was easily avoidable?

The interface is gorgeous, the animations are very well-tailored to addict you, but they just had to come up with an entirely different card game mechanics/moveset instead of using what already exists and thrives for decades...

3min replaying the GameBoy Color version and I dumped the mobile one with prejudice.

If moving the stick Up makes the camera rotate Down, I'm good to go. Is that what kids call inverted today or did they invert it?

Bad controls.

Fallout
Mass Effect
Skyrim

I wanted to play through them so bad but the controls were horrible. When I was used to the smooth controls of Halo, Destiny and Call of Duty, choppy unresponsive aiming and controls is an immediate game killer for me.

Agree--especially as regards the first Mass Effect. I'm glad I pushed through, though, and I hear the new legendary version has improvements.

Ah yes. Add to the list Outer Wilds. The input delay is so bad it was unplayable. Which is a shame because everyone raved about it. My unscientific measurement using slow motion phone video put it at over 300ms.

I'll have to take your word for it, as I haven't played the Trading Card game since there were only 151 Pokémon... 😂

But I'm glad that the game is extremely simple to pick up, and that I knew how to play within the first match. I wish there was a bit more of a reward in the risk factor for putting more than one type in your deck, but hey; maybe that'll be later.

I definitely got one.

I recently picked up Control off the Game Pass—one of the most awesome and fun experiences I've had in a VERY long time! A game that I consider to be almost perfect! (Shoulda known, since it was a Remedy game. ;-)

But one thing that certainly irks me is ...what I guess could be called the damage scaling, in terms of start vs. mid and end game. As you grow throughout, and earn chance to upgrade your player, that includes your health. You can upgrade it to a very high amount. Only thing is, the enemy damage seems to upgrade with it. So if a heavy damage collision knocks you down to critical in one hit at Level 0 health, when you upgrade to Level 7 health...a heavy damage collision knocks you down to critical in one hit. Basically saying it kinda defeats the purpose. Otherwise a hell of a game, and it turns out both the normal and Ultimate edition are on Game Pass, so I'm playing them both. ;-)

They seem to call that inverted or reversed now. More insultingly, the other way is sometimes called natural.

I ain’t straining my eyes to follow a handful of pixels running on modern engines. Something about it is physically rage-inducing.

(Bring back CRTs).

Agreed, but I'm alright with it when the art style is applied as if it were intended to run on an old CRT set-up from the '80s or the '90s.

ME1's controls are terrible. They improved tremendously in the sequels, then BioWare went back and fixed them up retroactively for ME1 with the Legendary Edition.

Hey, this is exactly why I gave up on Animal Well!
