My belated contribution to this belabored topic.
Canon is overrated. Reach overwrote The Fall of Reach because Bungie wanted the freedom to do what was best for the game. Pick whichever version of events you prefer and just run with that.

My opinion has always been: the novel is the written history. The game is what happened. I mean, we were there, man.
