What motivates spaceship investment? (Destiny)
by petetheduck, Friday, May 09, 2014, 12:43 (3853 days ago)
We know you can (at least visually) upgrade your spaceship in Destiny. Assuming the upgrading requires the expenditure of glimmer and/or materials, what motivation do players have to invest in their spaceship?
Sure, we see it--in the hangar, in orbit, when deploying into the world--but are those fleeting moments really worth spending resources and effort upgrading a spaceship for?
The Director seems to suggest there isn't player-controlled space travel, but perhaps the spaceship is playable in some way..

I think that's the only motivating factor. If it's something a player sees- and especially if other players see it too- that's definitely something that people will want to put their space money into. It might not be that appealing to everyone, but it's definitely something that a lot of people will do. Especially in an endgame scenario where you have a lot of glimmer and few places to spend it.

Maybe dumping tons of glimmer into your ship will unlock the ability to go to farther worlds. Like the Moon and Mars are default unlocked, but getting to the derelict in Cassini will take a suped up ship

That's a good theory. Certain levels/worlds are unlocked via normal progression, and others (more premium? higher difficulty?) require a glimmer investment, maybe as a show of time invested and worthiness. It's not out of the realm of possibility.
Maybe...

If not then I agree with pete, at that point it would be like having armor effects or not wasting the money in Reach.

That would work. I'm not sure I like that kind of barrier, but there has to be some kind of barrier in place..
It would certainly justify the upgrade.

In a way it could make sense in-game. So you have this ship, and it's a pretty nifty ship to manage getting to the Moon or Mars, but this little thing is also somehow awesome enough to go way further out to other planets? Maybe this thing flat out requires upgrades in order to get going, or so that you don't pay a really nasty price.
Not sure how it would work, but I guess I'm sort of thinking about it like in Mass Effect 2 where if you don't upgrade your ship, you can pretty much bet on lots of people dying and/or failure.
Space Ship = HALO Reach Armor
by PackLeader89, Durham, NC, Friday, May 09, 2014, 12:52 (3853 days ago) @ petetheduck
I don't want to be the pessimist, but considering everything else that Bungie is promising with Destiny, I'm putting my money on my subject above.
It was pretty cool being able to almost fully-design your armor in Halo Reach. I wish that the Halo 4 armor customizing was as good as Reach's (Halo 4 armors look kinda bony).
I have a feeling the space ship customization will be limited to aesthetics because there has been no mention of space fighter combat or any other use for the space ships besides transporting yourself from place to place.
And I agree--there will be some sort of achievement involved in it.

What motivates players to change the color of their armor?
What motivates players to change the skin on their weapon? Or their emblem?
The answer, in my mind, is simply because you can.
Iron Brigade is a good example of this I think, if you've ever played it.
Nope

The point wasn't about simply customizing stuff, but spending currency that can be spent in game-changing stuff (supposedly) to customize stuff.

I think his comment still applies. People like cosmetic pieces and flair; sometimes the coolness of a piece of armor is enough that it's more likely to be worn than less appealing piece with better stats.

First impulse says "What do you mean 'What motivates spaceship investment'"! Its a freek'n space ship. That goes to space! Ya know, the place that is really really far up? That is space - and that is awesome.
Then once I came back to earth and realize you are asking what the perks are for investing your own personal space ship in Destiny, I feel that the answer would be more along the lines of not just visual identification, but gameplay possibilities as well.

My guess and hope is additions to your ship provide small in battle benefits. Want a better motion tracker? Equip your ship with a radar dish. Want more ammo capacity? Add in a (stylish!) weapons locker. That sort of thing.

Except Bungie has said you don't get to fly or fight in your ship. It's for getting from place to place, and you don't get to control it.

I believe he's talking about on foot combat. So your ship would be flying over head to provide these things for you.

I think there might be a little signal loss here.
I think the original post was talking about upgrades to your ship that acted like an always-on, passive ability. Rather than another game where it would be an amulet or ring that added a motion tracker or higher ammo capacity, it's just something you add to the ship. Not so much that you activate it like an ability and your craft swoops down to give you a powerup for a short time.
"Radar dish. Equipping this to your personal spacecraft will give you a permanent 10 meter boost to your motion tracker."
That was my thought, anyways.

Are you really arguing that if something isn't in the current info dump then it's not possible for it to be in game? Especially with big reveals promised for E3. Doubly especially for a Bungie title? Just how short sighted, unimaginative, and ignorant of Bungie history are you?! :/
We know that your Ghost can be upgraded and it is hinted that it can be useful in direct combat but we haven't seen that yet. Is that not going to be in game?
We know vehicles can be upgrade and it has been hinted that there will be a vehicle capable of catering to an entire fireteam exists but have not seen either of these yet. Are those also not going to be in game?
We've been told we can upgrade individual armor pieces and that some give additional benefits but have not been shown that yet. Is armor upgrading not happening?
Hell, we've been told that that there will be mission on planets other than Earth but nobody has been able to report on that yet. Is playing on other planets out too?
I swear Cody, sometimes you are so closed minded it almost literally hurts.

Indeed. I'm thinking your ship will only ever show up as it zooms by overhead dropping you off, but maybe upgrades you add on can benefit you from its unseen position somewhere far overhead. I just feel there's too much concept art and too much featuring of the ships (even in the very first Destiny video) for the ships to be so unimportant to be merely cosmetic.
I think we have a question for next Mail Sack

Do we only get to see them for the half-second it takes to fly across the sky while dropping your friends and that long-ish shot of in-formation flying from the press demo or is there a hangar/profile-viewer of sorts that lets you bask in your friend's ship's full glory?
