The Ultimate Question: Instant Grenades or CC Grenades? (Destiny)

by Dan de Board @, Sunday, July 27, 2014, 22:25 (3860 days ago)

Now that the Beta is over, I'd like to discuss one of my favorite abilities across all classes, the grenades!

I felt like the grenade system was very well done and very strategic in it's implementation. The cooldown timer meant you couldn't spam grenades and had to think carefully about how to use them. Too often did I accidentally use my grenade and found I needed it when it was on cooldown.

In the Beta there were two types of grenades:

Instant Grenades: Flashbang, Incendiary, Scatter. Any grenade whose explosion doesn't last more than a second.

CC Grenades: Pulse, Swarm, Vortex. Any grenade whose explosion lasts more than a second.

I found the CC grenades better to use, especially in multiplayer. Many times I'd cover a door with a pulse grenade (especially useful with Aftershocks) or have to lose valuable capture progress because of a vortex grenade. I tried fussing with the flashbang grenade but found that it's effect wasn't all that helpful, and the scattef grenade was almost useless in multiplayer.

What are your thoughts on the grenades in Destiny?

I felt the Swarm grenade was pretty useless too. Even if all of the swarm hit one Guardian they would only lose their shields. Compare that to the Pulse and Vortex grenades and those could take down an entire team if the team couldn't get out in time.

Yeah people could still be dying after I respawn by wandering into THE VORTEX!

Scatter grenade

It's a very useful grenade if you find yourself encountering an ultra or a large group of enemies. The results are devastating you combine it with something like a incendiary or swarm grenade, or coordinated rifle fire from another Guardian. They're also nice to see whittle down the HP from a Devil Walker, even if they probably don't do jack shit.

Instant Grenades or AoE* Grenades?

by kapowaz, Monday, July 28, 2014, 00:26 (3860 days ago) @ Dan de Board

*Area of Effect is the more traditional RPG name for this effect of damage dealt by an area that continues for a period of time after the initial cast. Crowd Control effects usually refers to abilities that occupy or otherwise distract enemies to prevent them attacking you (although interestingly enough that means the flashbang effect of the Titan grenade falls into this category).

I had some fun kills with the Titan's electric pulse grenade, but I was trending back towards the instant explosion ones later on for the blinding effect. I had very excellent luck with the Hunter's seeker drone grenade though. I plan to stick with that one over the fire grenade. :)

Who had the grenade that made the silvery-blue diamond things and what were the supposed to do... I don't think they ever killed me with those and I never unlocked them...

The Warlocks instant effect grenade?

It sparkled around a bit, but I don't think you could lose much health if you simply walked through. Hell, I don't think I managed to kill a single Fallen with it, let alone another Guardian.

As a Hunter, I pretty much always went with the swarm grenade for PvP. It activated on impact and was excellent for finishing off that guy who was trying to evade around a corner or get away.

Flash Grenade for me

Nothing like blinding your opponents to make them uncomfortable, and allow you to get in close enough for a shotgun to the face.

If Im trying to protect a control point, I feel like the Flash grenades larger area of effect, while less damaging, gives me more room to work with as Im less likely to be gunned down as I come in through the door.

Love the grenade system. Swarm and Pulse ended up being my favorites, out of what I played with. Never unlocked the Warlock's 2nd tier grenade.

So. Many. Kills in Crucible just by planting a pulse grenade on the point. Even if I died, which happened a lot, folks would still walk in range of the pulse and I'd pick up an extra kill or two.

Swarm was great if I was being chased, or just wanted to lock down one approach to the point so I had less to focus on for a few seconds.
