In the MMO world these are called "Monster Closets", aka spawn points for enemies

Chests also seem to spawn in them randomly.

I try to check the caves as I'm running around just in case there is a loot chest hidden inside.

On interiors, yes. But out in the open landscapes of Patrol, they use the caves (which also spawn random loot chests as Postmortem mentioned)
More than just MMOs
Wolfenstein, Doom, etc are what I think of.
