Fireteam Etiquette (Destiny)

I find that it's a real hassle messaging people in this game. And it's a hassle reading messages.

If you are on my friends list and want to play with me then just join my fireteam and ask. It's unlikely that I'd say no :-) I suppose I might be doing something that I had to do solo but if that were the case then I'd let you know when I'd be free again.

It takes less time to join a fireteam and just ask than it takes to message and wait for a reply.

Don't waste ten minutes of your life sending a message and then, at least, half an hour waiting for me to notice, find somewhere safe to read it, etc, ect.

It's faster for you to just join my fireteam and speak to me.

For people not on my friends list: send a friend request then once you are a friend just jump in whenever you see me.

I don't really like Crucible but I'm game for anything else.

So if you are of a like mind and prefer people to join and ask... then reply to this message (even if you don't want to play with me). This way people will know if they should msg first or just chat inteam.

OTOH If I were to jump in on you and you where in a solo mood, just say so, I wont take offence and I wouldn't want you to do something you don't want to out of politeness. It takes two seconds of my time to jump in and out of a fireteam so it's not a problem.

I think you make a great point here. I do however remember being pulled into someone else's fireteam against my will which was annoying. Was very strange to be working on a mission and then get pulled out.

On another note, I need to not be so worried about playing with people I don't know. For some reason I haven't played with anyone outside a close circle of friends, but they don't seem to have as much time to play as I do in the evenings.

Perhaps I just need to jump in and go from there.

I wish they had matchmaking for fireteams outside of strikes and raids. It would be nice to just be able to go public any time I want to play a mission, instead of having to hunt someone down to play with. I'm not really interested in that. It seems odd to me that they don't have this.

They don't have it for raids, and that's probably a good thing. I agree with you otherwise, though. They could even do it like Strikes, where you have to explicitly invite people to your fireteam to be able to hear them. I find the game more fun co-op and the most fun playing co-op with members at or near the same level. That's been tough to find.

Oh yeah, I agree that voice chat should be by invite (though I usually universally mute everyone for most games). But yeah, the campaign is getting boring really fast to me, because it is clearly structured for coop. There just isn't enough actually happening to make it fun by myself.

It's a shame that the private areas of story missions are mostly the same places from the sandbox with different spawns. The result is that there are really only four levels in the game, one for each planet. I would love to see more tailored experiences in the story, but at least if there were matchmaking, it would make what's there already feel less empty.

Im torn

On the one hand, when someone I like joins my fireteam partway through a match its like "Hey awesome, Numinar/Dan/whoever's here!", so I'd love to be able to leave my Fireteam open (or Friends Only, at least).

But on the other, I have real life "friends" Im socially obligated to keep on my friends list, as well as some people who are great in small doses, but who I dont want randomly joining me mid-mission/crucible match. Plus theres the awkwardness of nipping to the tower with my main Fireteam, having someone join me, and having to explain "Sorry friend, I was planning to have fun without you today".

So I leave my Fireteam Invite Only unless Im in the crucible. BUT, Im always in party chat rather than game chat, so by all means pop in and ask for an invite/suggest some crucible. Shameless PSN gamertag plug: Lichtonatus

Can you explain this? What's the difficult part about doing either of these actions and why does sending a message take 10 minutes in your opinion?

Taking 10 minutes, of course. As he stated, he feels jumping in a game is less of a hassle than sending messages. I agree with him, given you do not use anything but the on-screen keyboard to type. Using Smartglass, the controller keyboard or a USB keyboard, however, kind of breaks his point to me.

Typing with a controller or recording a message is super slow on PS4. It's worse than Skype, it will tell you a message has arrived but not actually display it in your message list for minutes at a time (maybe because my PSN account is on another continent).

VOIP isn't always appropriate, some people have not set their headsets up right, so one can barely hear them or there is brain melting interference. I myself sometimes have to not use it because small apartment with a Wife and Child who do not want to be woken up by my screaming "Spawns!".

I like the idea of some kind of fairly aggressive, low range opt-in proximity chat in the tower though. (With reporting tools of course.)

Does the game weigh tower matchmaking to friends in the tower already?

I love Destiny, but a few things are bumming me out this week related to obvious co-op content without a way to do this well:

No Clan list in the Roster. Dumb. Might be an issue with 1st Party requirements though or a legal headache. Manually entering peoples names sucks. Someone with skillz should write a script to do it through the web or something like we had with the grimoire codes. (import DBO PS4 players and add a proper message to each one).

No matchmaking for Weekly Strikes or those hard special story missions for the queen. If I have to be over-leveled to do something, give me MM. I hate spamming people with invites (I need to go through and add more people from our DBO list, I tend to stick to whoever is on the DBO phone chat but I guess hardly anyone uses that).

Suggestion: Set roster status. Have options like "Want to crucible", "Want to do event missions" or "Want to do Nightfall".

Sorry for the spam invites everyone. I sometimes only get a few hours a night and none of my usual friends are cool enough to like Destiny. See you all in orbit!

I just had an awesome idea.

Only enable tower prox chat in physical places in the tower that make sense, like the bars/sitting areas. That way you can Cryptarch and shop in Peace, and go sit down on a sofa if you want to LFG.
