Avenue A and Armor Piercing Rounds (Destiny)

I just got killed on First Light by someone shooting through the class from directly to the left (looking A to C). I smiled at his big red sniper indicator confident that I was safe... then I wasn't. The hell?! Is this a thing? Armor piercing rounds go through geometry perhaps?

Does anyone have experience with this kind of thing? If it's not a bug then man, the way I have to play the game has just changed. A and C on first light are way exposed to anyone with the right random mod on a random gun. I'll have to think about all the other places you can see someone through a window or screen...
