I have been brainwashed before. The two big ones I recall were Brute Force on the OG Xbox and Rome 2 in recent times. Rome 2 probably had more to do with how awesome the Shogun expansions were.
Now Digital Anvil (if they still exist) and Sega/Creative assembly don't get pre-orders from me anymore. They will have to earn it back.
Bungie is not quite there yet, since I've probably spent close to 100 hours on their latest in less than a month and enjoyed 95+% of it. A better strike rate than almost anything I have put money on, even if I was caught out by the dodgey narrative.
(I worked out from the alpha/beta that we would be getting only a handful of zones with a few dozen short missions. Maybe if I had followed more hype I would have had the same crazy expectations everyone else had about content).

Strange, I actually liked Brute Force.

So did IGN!
God, everything about it looked amazing. Everything about it played like drab phoned in schlock. I finished it, but in the post halo world it just wasn't enough.
Though I feel the same way about Borderlands and plenty of people smarter and cooler than me think otherwise (A game whose setting, writing and concept I love, but whose moment to moment gun play I abhor).

I'm extremely susceptible to marketing and hype. I'm the kind of person who watches an infomercial and thinks it's an amazing idea. Luckily I'm also Scottish so I hate parting with money.
I blame it on the empathy my career path has cultured. I'm just so damn understanding of the world, that it can sell me anything.

Strange, my father always said his mother was Scottish which meant she never saw a penny she didn't want to save. I always assumed he was making excuses for why he was such a miser, but maybe this is one of those strangely accurate stereotypes?

I wouldn't say it to every Scotsman you meet, but it's more likely to be true than false I'd say of any given Scottish person

In the case of Destiny, I was actually kinda skeptical. I wasn't as invested in the game's development as I was towards something like Halo or Mass Effect. Whether this was because I wanted to keep myself relatively in the dark about the game as to not spoil myself or because I just didn't really care is still up in the air for me. Maybe it was because Bungie didn't think that we cared to see any more ViDocs that we saw all throughout the development of their past three games.
Bungie never really sold the game for me until the beta got into my paws. Only then did I see the promise of Destiny that I could have otherwise seen beyond the veil for over a year. The gameplay was so enjoyable and I kept coming back for more. The story left me wanting more, but I simply concluded that of course Bungie would hold back a great deal of Destiny's story content. This was just a beta after all, rit? Right! I'm betting Activision kinda hoped for that to be the case for a great many people. So, with my fears stifled, I went out and pre-ordered both the white PlayStation 4 and a limited edition copy of the game. All that money on a fairly half-assed game marketed to consumers like it would be the messiah of video games.
lol

I'd like to add that this post wasn't necessarily about Destiny, but games in general, but speaking specifically about Destiny...
I was much more taken with it, but to be honest I was on board long before the real marketing took over.
As it came closer and closer to launch I started getting more and more skeptical, but I was banking a lot on my prior experiences with Bungie.
I think this is the last game I'll ever buy at launch. I've been burned by enough of my favorite companies and franchises, everyone's got to earn my sale from now on.

Destiny tested whether I was a Halo fangirl or a Bungie fangirl too. The beta assured me that the latter was true. Like Halo, it left me wanting more and more. The full game has left me doubting if I was as much of a Bungie fan as I thought I was. Destiny really disappointed me. Worse, some of the things I've heard, both blatantly public and otherwise, has left me with a view of Bungie that's less than ideal.

Even though I too have been burned by a lot of my favorite series and devs, I don't think that this will be the last game I'll buy at launch because I'm a sucker like that. Even their faults, Mass Effect 3 and Halo 4, two notable games that have disappointed me, still had solid experiences throughout. Their stories, to a point, were enjoyable, and the gameplay was exciting. But Destiny will surely be the last game I put a lot of faith in for a new IP to the extent that I invested in it. It just feels so incomplete and not even the totally polished aspects can overshadow the lackluster ones.

Destiny tested whether Bungie was still a premiere game developer and a driver of the industry. They are not.

Perhaps not with Destiny, but I still believe they are and can be going into the future. Whether that's just the fan talking or pure hope, I know they have it in themselves to make the best possible game that fulfills all promises to themselves and their fans.

Not with everybody gone. Unless they find talent elsewhere, and talent that meshes, it's over.

As far as hype or liking things or being permissive or overly optimistic, I'm not brainwashed. In gaming, like in everything, I believe it's very important to have low expectations. It sounds grim, but it's how life is, and it might sound like playing semantics, but low expectations don't mean low hopes. I have high hopes for a ton of things, but I try to keep low expectations. Destiny is a great example of both, actually-- it measured up to over half of my hopes but far from all of them, while it measured up to or exceeded almost all of my expectations (I still can't figure out what possessed them to build this UX monster they've made).

Does it really matter?
Someone can call me brainwashed for loving a game, and who's ultimately better off? Me. I have more forms of enjoyment than they do.
It isn't like a matter of morality. It's a game.

If I may wax philosophical, I feel that if I'm manipulated into feelings, they are still my feelings. One can't draw a line between their "real selves" and outside influence, I said as much when Cody was on about "the Matrix" some time ago. (For clarity, I know you were joking.)
On another note, seconding the welcome.

Is it? How many folks you think take Call of Duty's pro-war jingoistic bullcrap to heart more than they should?
This guy is trying to help sell wars. I suspect his games have helped prepare the ground.

I fell for H1A and Halo 4. H5 Beta doesn't have me fooled, and I'll absolutely be waiting on getting Halo 5 (if at all). :)
Not me. Halo Wars, StarCraft II and ME3 burned me so hard. It's incredibly difficult for me to get excited about a game anymore. The AAA polish doesn't work, as don't the banners on gaming websites that I never visit. I'm not really tied to any one title, so "A sequel to your favorite game!" has zero draw.
One exception: another Bioshock game set in Rapture. You wouldn't even have to say "Would you kindly?"
I will profess a weakness for indie science fiction games. Something, anything to capture that old Homeworld feel, or remind me what it was like to play StarCraft the first time around. Even if it's just a retro-futuristic tower defense game, I'm interested.

F*** this guy, seriously.

Exactly. The stuff he's pushing on military types is the real horror.
