Level and Gear Matters in Iron Banner huh? (Destiny)

by Injunfett, Wednesday, October 08, 2014, 18:41 (3937 days ago)

So I have been playing Iron banner since it dropped and Me and My friends like most have noticed that it doesn't seem any different from normal Crucible. Well I found this video of a LVL 4 in the Iron Banner from reddit and you tell me if gear matters.

http://youtu.be/IgCJjNjZl28

So far Events have been a complete failure in my book. The Vechicle Playlist lacked vechiles, the Queen's Wrath event great till I couldn't break the pointless gear down for shards, and now we have the Iron Banner which Attack/Defense/Rank should matter by they don't.

Deej response to someone on the b.net forms were Rank does matter but so does skill.... Doesn't that make it normal Crucible? I mean the higher level helps with extra abilities but as long as you have skill your fine.

I'm trying to like this game but bungie is making it very hard.

I was just about to make a similar post. My Doctor Nope is doing the same damage to everyone, regardless of level and Defense stat.

Now, there must be some difference, because my instakill shoulder charge isnt alwaya an instakill in Iron Banner, and *I* certainly feel squishier, but I've no idea exactly what stats I should be looking at.

Plus a level 8 with a 120 Atk Marshal-A coming second on the winning team. Sure, okay.

...Your complaint is seriously "skill still matters"?

I. What.

I don't think that is his point.

the point is that the Iron Banner does not play the way that it supposedly should.

No, the complaint is that level and gear DOESN'T seem to matter. That was supposed to be the big difference between Iron Banner and the rest of the Crucible playlists.

The only difference I've noticed from a few games is that I seem to go down easier (and people play harder and quit more easily).

Which is weird, because when I played Iron Banner in the Beta it seemed to take LONGER to take players down there.

I frequently go down in just a couple hits in Iron Banner. Might be because everyone has better gear than me, but I doubt thats the case with the level 8 who kicked my ass. Besides which, my DpS is exactly the same in IB to standard crucible. You'd think if everyone has better gear than me they'd take less damage than normal in addition to dealing it?

*shrug* No idea.

Exactly! Also, the Iron Banner description....

"Bring your toughest gear, your strongest weapons, you're going to need them."

Remember this?

I dont know about him, but my complaint is that I dont really understand how Iron Banner works. My gun does the same damage to everyone, regardless of level or Defense stat. So gear cant make that much of a difference?

Something's definitely different because I regularly place in the top 2 in vanilla crucible, but I kinda suck in IB. So either something is different or Im getting a placebo effect. But I dont know what exactly, if weapon damage isnt being modified like in PvE. Maybe Defense just translates to additional health?

Ah, thank you. I haven't played any Iron Banner because I didn't like it in the Beta, so I was just going off of his texual points. My interpretation seems to have been rather flawed.

My point is..

by Injunfett, Wednesday, October 08, 2014, 21:27 (3937 days ago) @ RaichuKFM

As other have said my point isn't really about skill. Its the fact we were lead to believe that Iron Banner would be nerf free, and that clearly isn't the case. While their is more than likely some advantage for a higher light level, and better gear its unclear exactly what it is.

I as well as many others by the look of it expected the Iron Banner to be nerf free like I said. I expected this to be sort of like a End Game PVP event that actually put the gear I have worked so hard to get to matter. Yes I wanted to have a playlist were I would have a advantage based off of the work I put in, and since I am only a level 29 I expected to have to step my game up when I ran across a level 30 and hope I could out skill him.

It took me 5 days to level up all my weapons, and gear I planned to take into the Iron Banner. I blew energy and shards I was saving on to upgrade my raid gear when RNGJesus decides to bless me. (Don't get me started after 4 VOG's runs, and 2 Hardmode runs all I got is a helmet a ship and some guns. There is always next week right? RIGHT?) All this work and just to watch a level 10 take it like its just a regular playlist.

Well I was clearly wrong, I'm let down, and others are down right mad. So you expect Bungie to clear the air and explain whats up. Well all we get is Deej being cryptic saying,

"I'll be addressing this in the Weekly Update.

Preview: Power Matters, but so does skill."
Link to response.

Friday really? The community is getting the pitchforks ready and you have to wait 2 days to explain whats going on and how the event really works?

I don't know this event is just turning into another Queens Wrath in my opinion, and just like Queens Wrath I am pretty sure you can't break the gear down for shards.

Just saw that vid myself...

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous given the incredibly low attack ratings of his weapons.

Back in the Beta, the Iron Banner felt very different; high-defence players took noticeably longer to go down.

Maybe they forgot to turn 'Gear Advantages' on?

I can see some small differences

by Monochron, Thursday, October 09, 2014, 06:59 (3936 days ago) @ Injunfett

I don't use Auto Rifles in Crucible, but it does look like it is taking him longer to take down enemies than I take with my Scout Rifle. Maybe the difference in level/gear is just significantly less pronounced than we previously thought?

I would guess that there is a slight level/gear advantage here, but not what we would expect given how damage works in PvE. Now that we are all used to a certain damage model existing in PvE, we naturally assume that the same model would be used in Iron Banner, but I imagine Bungie wanted to tweak that model a good bit. It looks like they tweaked it way more than we expected.

Some observations

by Durandal, Thursday, October 09, 2014, 13:34 (3936 days ago) @ Injunfett

Some observations:

*It takes 4 seconds of concentrated fire for him to kill someone. 3 seconds with head shots or punches.
*He is always the first to open fire.
*He is on a coordinated team
*Most opponents don't know he is there.
*His team bails him out of 1:1 situations (like at 1:05 where a titan knocks down his shield while taking only a 1/3 his own)
*He is one hit killed by a single warlock punch from the front at full shield
*People survive rocket hits from him
*Several of his kills are supported by his ally with the Vex Mithocast shooting the same target (such as 3:16)

Does that mean there is no difference between IB and normal PVP? Probably not. recall that even level 2 dregs in Old Russia can still hurt level 28s. So the damage and armor scaling are a factor, but not to the point where either are useless. Also, we don't see how more often people use supers, grenades and melee which are the other bonuses in IB.

Show me where he leads the fight and defeats two ambushing enemies to take a zone without his level 30 buddies in the background.

This is a bad thing?

by electricpirate @, Thursday, October 09, 2014, 20:19 (3936 days ago) @ Injunfett

No seriously, dude seems to be at a distinct disadvantage (Like his TTK is pretty nuts), but by using teamwork, and situational awareness he comes out on top. Level ups matter, but can't displace Skill.

Where is the problem? I legitimately don't understand.
