No matter what I tried, I could not join or be joined into an instance with any other guardians. Patrols, Strike Matchmaking, the Tower... I was the only remaining Guardian in the entire inner solar system. Attempting Crucible would just sit for about 5-7 minutes before giving me the mongoose.
I played through some Patrol and it was weird being in "single player" mode. Not seeing other guardians ever made the game feel so lonely.
Misleading title is misleading :p

I had that happen my first time with the real game. I was walking around the Tower and nobody was there. It was kinda weird given that it was launch day and the beta had worked fine. Hopefully things get better for you! :)

I had this happen to me, and I felt the same way: alone.
In that moment, I had a revelation: as much as I'm a lone wolf player, I really enjoy the encounters with other guardians out in the wild. I will race my sparrow to go revive someone or join a public event. Walking around the moon without anyone else around was actually a little scary!
I'm glad that Destiny revealed this side of me that actually cares about others. "I never knew I had it in me".

During the Beta, I went back to the tower just before the Moon opened up at like 2pm or whatever. The tower was totally empty because everyone was getting into the moon while I waited for Emmy to get online.
It was really eerie...

Pfft. When we went to the Moon it was empty. We only saw one other Fireteam the whole time we were there. It was awesome and tons of "FIRST PERSON ON THE MOON TO ____" jokes were made. It got even better once the Moon closed off again and the rest of my Fireteam was RTOed. FIRST PERSON TO SOLO ON THE MOON. Spent an hour or two exploring the Hellmouth without a single other Guardian around. It was pretty cool stuff.

Otherwise, it strange you are getting no connections to other players. I'm surprised you can connect to the servers and not get any players.

I've been in the Tower with no players or vendors. Completely empty. Then suddenly everyone materialized around me. It had a Twilight Zone feel to it.

I have played a few times this week with no issues. I don't know if the server-side patch/update that Bungie did yesterday had anything to do with it, but I guess I'll find out tonight when I try to play again....

I've had this happen a few times. Xbox One seems to have some serious problems where all multiplayer networking freaks out and the only fix is to completely power the box down and turn it back on.

I've had this happen a few times.
Happened once on PS4, but I was still able to join another fireteam, and everything went back to normal.
I think it's more to do with Bungie's servers (failing to match your ports in an instance?). Can't you simply disable networking and re-enable it to establish a fresh connection? A lot faster than powering down and back up... That tends to fix server-join issues for me.
Yup, Xbox One. I tried tonight and had no issues. I really think this was an issue with my ISP because earlier in the night my internet had some hiccups while I was trying to work. I think if I see this again I'll do a hard reset like you suggest and see if that fixes it.
