Favorite location in Destiny and why? (Destiny)

Just curious which location people tend to find themselves wanting to go back to the most often.

For me it's the Cosmodrome. I love the color palette, and there's something about the place that just feels more natural than all the other locations, without being dull. The Moon and Mars are great, but they're so very monochromatic. Grey moon rocks everywhere. Red martian sand everywhere. But the Cosmodrome has a great mix of everything. And I just love the post-apocalyptic vibe it gives off, without being dull and depressing. It's one of the happiest post-apocalyptic environments I can remember seeing. I just love spending time wandering around and admiring its landscapes.

I would say the Tower, but it's just so small and confined, and I think some of the ambiance is ruined by all the dancing Guardians. :P There's just nothing that compares with the wilds of Old Russia in my mind.

Where do you like spending most of your time?

Two different questions

by Funkmon @, Friday, October 10, 2014, 02:12 (3935 days ago) @ Postmortem

1. Most of my time? Cosmodrome.
2. Favourite location? The shore on Venus. Those puddles of orange juice are nice.

I've spent a lot of time on the Moon and Earth. I think my favorite location has got to be Venus. It's just got such an interesting blend of colors, terrain, and environments. I really like fighting the Cabal on Mars though, but I don't like the terrain or colors as much. Port the cabal to Venus and I'd be a happy camper.

Aesthetically, I like Venus the best, it's a gorgeous environment. Gameplay I think I enjoy Mars the most. The areas are a lot of fun to fight in, and on a smaller note it's nice having a mix of caves and Cabal structures to find chests in.

Favorite location in Destiny & nitpicks regarding the moon.

Venus is my favorite, or the black garden. They're lovely. I find venus very varied, sometimes the dirt & rocks are red, other times gray.

The moon is where I've spent the most time. Patrol for fun (leveling up) while first playing the campaign & currently harvesting around archer line-anchor of light.

I must note that I'm a little disappointed that the gravity doesn't change between the different locales. I think that could have really added some interesting variety to the gameplay. I remember monkeying with the gravity settings in Marathon & I fully expected to see that in Destiny, especially since, prelaunch, they were showing off things like the sunrise/sunset time lapse of the earth, moon, venus, & mars.

On another side note, has anyone noticed that Bungie very NEARLY got the sunrise/set correct on the moon? I was astounded at how much they totally nailed. It's gorgeous! Their minor mistakes were (1 fact, 1 opinion here):
1- Fact: That the stars should have moved with the sun, but instead they were static with the earth (which they got right as it does remain at one spot in the moon's sky all the time). I can see how that 'mistake' might have been done that way due to engine limitations (rotating skyboxes?).
2- Opinion: That the day-night cycle is entirely too fast. Yes, I know day-night cycles are accelerated in Destiny so that we can actually experience them as we play, but the day-night cycle of the moon matches it's orbit of the earth, which is 28 days long. Maybe they could have made the moon's day-night cycle take 72 real hours or something. I'd be curious at what rate they have the different planet's day-night cycle running & how it matches up to reality. Hmm, I smell a project.

The Tower at night. There's just a vibe. I love the back atrium area, where the Queen's emissary hung out. I like sitting on one of the outcroppings that jut out over the city on the landing side, too, and just take in the city lights. My warlock imagines the people living there, and reflects on his duty to protect them. I also love the room where the speaker lives. It's like an art installation.

For patrol, I prefer the Cosmodrome. It's like visiting the old neighborhood. Oh, hey, overpowered Vandal, I remember you! I'm a lot stronger now.

Venus is my favorite geographically. The views just take my breath away, and there's variety.

Mars still holds the most mystery for me because I've spent the least amount of time there. I look forward to more exploration.

The moon is my least favorite, although the subterranean areas remind me very much of Gears of War, in a good way. The skybox beats all other skyboxes, though.

One of the coolest things about Destiny is how different things look at different times of day. I'll be playing a strike or story mission and it'll seem like I haven't played it before, when actually, I just haven't played it at dusk.

But yeah, the Tower at night.

I picked up the bounty for "A Light in the Darkness(?)" (Thorn) last night & was spending some quality time alone in the interior of the moon. It was actually fairly spooky to be in that area with my titan & nobody else while in reality sitting alone in the basement of my house with the lights out.

Was just listening to the soundtrack and had an epiphany. I love being wherever "Deconstruction" is playing, and that's usually the Tower.

Teamplay: Vault of Glass
Futzing around on my speeders Sparrows: Mars
Public Events: Venus for its Prevent Vex Sacrifices, and Mars for "the enemy is moving against each other". Both of which can get extremely hectic.

Our Moon is cool, but The City can kiss my ass if it thinks I'm going to ruck it more than 10ft into the Hive tunnels to do scans or kill some damn VIP. I'll stick on the outside and let the time-of-day shifts let me think a public event is about to start, when it really isn't. I hate trying to walk all the way back up to the surface and to an area where I can redeploy my Sparrow to get to where I need to be.

I try to avoid Old Russia as much as I can, even though it's a cool place to explore. Far too few items I have require Spinmetal to upgrade (yet another RNG-fail) and, counting the Beta, I felt as thought I have spent way too much time there compared to the other planets.

The Vault of Glass.

The two jumping puzzle areas are my favorites. They really capture a sense of otherworldliness and bring out my desire to explore. A friend and I spent 30 minutes jumping to all of the weird objects in VoG's jumping puzzle area just to see what, if anything, was there. Super fun. I wish there was even a single non-raid area that was that expansive and rewarding to explore. The Black Garden comes close, I guess, but like all story missions, it's too linearly designed.

In fact, man, the whole "patrol" areas are ALL too linearly designed. They're just loops with only one point of entrance to each adjoining area. To get from A to B you *have* to go through pass X. Whereas in the Vault, there are like 3 or 4 different paths from the first chest to the templar's room, and none of them are straightforward.

Bungie, if you read this, PLEASE put some actual exploration into your game. I'm really sick of finding a distant ledge I can jump to only to immediately get a "turn back" countdown.

Venus. It fits my mental image of what a terraformed Venus would be like, and the colors are purty.

For just hanging out, I think I like Mars the best, lots of open space, the feel of sand between my toes.

For gameplay, VoG is the best. It's a shame that the majority of players will never have the opportunity to experience the area. Bungie needs to bring these raid experiences to the lower level masses somehow.

Mars. I thinks it's the mind bending way that the levels are made. Sometimes the sand you are standing on is actually ground level, but sometimes you head way down under it then forget as you head back up a skyscraper only to emerge at... the surface. The concept and implementation of the Buried City is just so good. Sure it's like two streets, but they are very good streets. That and I love the iconic red sand dunes and the way everything desaturates at night turning almost blue. And the battles between the Vex and Cabal.

I agree with you that the Cosmodrome is probably my favorite in terms of the variety of locations and terrain. It's my go-to destination if I just want to do some partrol missions or goof around for a while.

That being said, cruising across the surface of Mars on my sparrow is high up on my list of favorite experiences in the game. There's something about the geometry of the rolling sand dunes that is a pleasure to drive on, the sloping hills down through the buried city, the deep red/orange sun saturating the sky. It's a real "zen" activity for me.
