Anyone else playing Destiny less? (Destiny)

Now that I've conquered the Raid and all of Bungie's "events" have been shown to be BS, the only reason I really hop on anymore is to play some Crucible or to do the Raid again. Whereas I was playing nearly daily for the first three weeks, I've only been on once in the past week and a half. For such a huge game, I feel like I've done everything I need or want to do at this point.

I still have fun when I play, but now it's just boring. Bounties never change. I've already tackled just about every mission and battle in every way I can possibly think of. I just need to do the Raid on Hard and try to beat the Raid with no one in my party dying, and that's about it until the expansion I think.

And then what's the expansion going to do? Give me a few more missions, a Strike, and a Raid? So maybe a week or two's worth of content? Then what? It's really disappointing that Destiny isn't holding my interest, and I'm wondering if anyone else is feeling the same (or maybe I should be asking this question when CoD and MCC come out lol).

As I've had more time with the game, I've also had more time to figure out what I don't enjoy spending my time on. As a result, more of my play time has been spent on things I enjoy, rather than grinding for better gear or for the sake of completion. The more I spend focusing on story and universe stuff, the more my imagination goes wild and the more I find myself wanting to play. :)

I wasted my entire weekend leveling up a new class character, but I also have no life, so I may not be the best judge of game quality.

I just started two alts this weekend so I can try something else out. my main character is a level 29 warlock, started a Hunter and a second Warlock to potentially help with Raid gear down the road.

Havn't done the Raid yet (Spent an hour trying to get in when we were under level) and only done Nightfall 28 once, and we cheesed it. Played every night except once after I had been out drinking and couldn't stay awake, and tonight because PSN has pooped itself.

So plenty to do! A bad Juju, Invective and once it's bounty is done a pocket infinity to level. Also a Titan! I've collected some good gear for it already.

But sure, once I get to where you are I might be be bored. Probably be at least 100 hours played by then, ~98% of them enjoyable!

Wow. What a game!

I still have some exotics that I haven't fully leveled up and/or upgraded. Nor have I got any Raid gloves. Still need the Raid revolver too (plus Pulse, Shotty, and Fusion) to really complete my Hunter. Still need one of the Hunter's exotic gloves and boots.

Plus I need to complete the Raid without my team dying. Which really shouldn't be that hard to do. Just a pain if someone does die at the very end. Unless it can just be cheesed by having them KTO and rejoin. As long as the death wasn't mine, I wouldn't care about such cheese cake.

So yeah, I do play less, but it's typically less of the missions and strikes (unless it's a new week, in which case I have to max out my marks to use on buying and dismantling gear for Shards). Wanting to play Raid more, just to get to know it like the back of my hand and explore some of the off-the-beaten paths.

Its the opposite for me...

I want to play it more now than I did when it first came out. I am genuinely enjoying the game.

I admit, I got frustrated when I discovered that I was blocked from some activities because I wasn't a high enough level. But I quickly decided that I wanted to just play because it was fun and not to get the level. Once I changed my focus away from trying to rank up, I found myself having a blast, and consequently, found myself ranking up faster as well.

And it may not be this way for everyone, but for me, Destiny really reminds me of playing Halo CE. With CE, there were no armor upgrades, or loot drops, but it was fun. I remember playing for hours just to try to beat a level for the sake of beating it, or sometimes to beat it better than the time before. I remember trying to play the Library level on legendary while only using one gun, just to change it up and see if I could do it. I find myself doing the same kind of things in Destiny, and not because the game wants me to, or because Ill get an engram for it, but because its really just fun to me. Picking up a bounty that forces me to use a different weapon instead of my trusty hand cannon, is fun. It makes me try to play different, and I like that. I don't pick it up for the sake of the bounty, I pick it up because its fun. Getting armor or loot out of the deal is just a bonus.

Plus, I really love how big the maps are. Yes, I know there are only 4, but it is 4 huge maps. I was playing a couple of days ago and just hopped on my sparrow with the sole intent of exploration. I was moving around Russia, and came across a whole section of the map I had never seen. It was thrilling for me and I spent over an hour just exploring that one portion of the map. And I love that the different sections of the map offer very varied play space. I tend to obsess over maps IRL, so I desperately hope some one release a full map of each world. I'd love to work on something like that myself, but extra time is an issue, and I find myself wanting to actually play the game with any free time I get.

As for the missions, there are some I have only played once, and some I have played multiple times, and I have never gotten bored yet. I really like replaying them and trying to get better. Work on better strategies for them, or different ways to approach them. Again, not because the game is making me, but because I find it fun. I genuinely want to play Destiny.

Anyone else playing Destiny less?

A vehicle playlist with as many or more vehicles than I can get in regular playlists, with faster vehicle respawn times. Salvage being a permanent playlist. Basically more Crucible options all around. Startling lack of gametypes, especially for teams of 6.

I want more Bounties. These Bounties are the same day after day after day, and it's pathetic. Destiny is huge and is supposed to have a lot to do, but these are the only bounties they could think of? They should come make a serious thread here at DBO asking us for bounty ideas. I bet DBO gets them a hundred or more plausible bounty ideas by the end of the week.

There's only a single Nightfall per week? Why? Get multiple options and things to do up in here. Once it's done, that's it. No additional rewards, no real reason to repeat beyond helping someone else beat it. Have one Nightfall be tackling the Raid with a bunch of modifiers (like Cody suggested) while maintaining another Nightfall that fits the current model.

Back to Crucible real quick, we could really use more maps, too. I hope they have that planned out for expansions.

The events need to be real events. Queen's Wrath was pretty cool, until it became a waste of time. No rewards for doing it once they made it so you couldn't get Ascendant items. The missions were cool, but they were the same ones each time, so that got stale unbelievably fast. There was no new content at all, so really the Queen had no enemies or things she needed you to do because, well, you already killed and beat those bosses and things prior to the Queen calling.

Iron Banner was absolutely not what was advertised or implied. This talk about some form of competitive playlist when actual Crucible is more competitive is a joke.

There are just these whack gimmicks that don't live up to the hype or present any reason to keep playing. The Raid is utterly fantastic, but I'm limited based on who's around to play it with me. Sure, I could always go in with randoms, but it's a lot harder to find random people or communicate with them when there's no matchmaking component and no way to chat with anyone in this world.

I keep hoping that Bungie has some stuff they're holding back on to unleash upon us to keep us playing, but after Queen's Wrath and Iron Banner, I think it's apparent that they really don't. This is it. Until the expansion, I think this is all we're going to get. For some reason we're limited to the same Bounties (including Salvage ones that always show up when Salvage isn't around), the same timed events, and only a single Weekly Strike or Nightfall instead of a nice range of options. It's very disappointing.

by marmot 1333 @, Monday, October 13, 2014, 12:11 (3932 days ago) @ Avateur

I enjoy PVE content more than PVP.

Each day I generally do some PVE bounties, try to find some public events, and do the daily story on 28 (I'm lvl 27).

I joined some randoms in the Nightfall strike but I didn't enjoy it. The Shanks were one-shotting me somehow, and the other two guys were underneath the metal platform shooting at the Archon... Not really my idea of fun.

I haven't done the Raid because I'm weird about making commitments to time-intensive online things. But it sounds fun. At the same time, I don't have much of an incentive to level up more because I don't like the Nightfall strikes and I'm not planning on raiding anytime soon.

Also, has anyone else here noticed they changed up the Public Events frequency quite a bit? I also got a bunch of blue weapons this past week that I had never seen before. Not sure if that was a game change or just more RNG.

Yeah, but . . .

by Monochron, Monday, October 13, 2014, 12:35 (3932 days ago) @ Avateur

I honestly never expected Destiny to hold my constant attention any longer than a Halo game. With a Halo game I would blast through the campaign, maybe do a little firefight, and then play multi player every other day for an hour or two. Eventually I would play back through campaign.

But with Destiny I have played almost every single day for multiple hours for the past 4 weeks. It's been nuts. I was absolutely pulled into the investment system and am still being pulled back by it (I have no Raid gear, and still need to level up my legendaries/exotics). I have wanted to max out my marks and the daily/weekly challenges and I NEVER used to care about Halo's weekly challenges because XP didn't really mean anything in-game.

Over the weekend I started feeling the pull a little less, but I have already invested a much higher density of my time in Destiny than any game before.

For me, the replayability is in having a character of each class, and having them specialized in different weapons. I've played the strikes to death with a hunter using hand cannons and sniper rifles, but switching to a sunsinger warlock with pulse rifles and fusion rifles has breathed new life into them. When I get tired of that I can switch to my titan with his auto rifles and shotguns and play some crucible. Plus the daily story missions with the modifiers have been a lot more fun than my initial playthrough. Being able to play those and the nightfall thorough 3 times and get rewards for each gives those more playtime.

Also, picking up exotics like The Last Word has added new life into my hunter. Mowing down dregs like I'm Clint Eastwood is just too much fun.

I drop in for occasional PvP matches because PvP is inherently fun, but other than that, I don't touch the game at all. The investment system is a Skinner box and I recognized it in time to avoid being addicted. Playing for rewards is not fulfilling, it's merely compulsive. There's nothing fun about it.

Obviously if you disagree, that's fine. I'm glad you enjoy the game. I simply fail to find anything fun about working my ass off for that little piece of cheese at the end of the maze. That's my opinion.

Once you hit 28, everything that is worth doing is on a weekly rotation. Why not have a high level social area in The Reef, with 28+ missions out in deep space?

The events also need to be worthwhile. They seem to be geared toward players in the grindy 20 to 26 area, which is great, I wish I had waited to grind until the QW event, it would have gone by much, much faster - or at least felt faster. The Iron Banner had a real shot at being cool, until Bungie delivered the exact opposite that they advertised. For the events to be successful, they need to provide the opportunity to get gear that is truly desirable. Gear that is raid quality, obtained outside of the Raid. That is what will keep people engaged in the events and drooling for them to come back.

Once you get near the cap and complete the Raid, there is nothing to keep you coming back every day.

And also, Sparrow Racing. It needs to happen.

I'm playing a little less. For instance I started a game of Mass Effect 3 the other day. But then again, it's been a month straight that I have been playing Destiny. How long should a game hold ones interest? I think one of Destiny strengths is that they can be picked up and played very quickly especially after you get past level 20. And that it can be played with friends so easily. I think there's value in that even if the story content didn't deliver as well as it should have.

I don't think there's anything wrong with tiring of a game after a month of very solid play. For me I'm kind of impressed at how much fun and how much of a hold the game still has even though it's kind of the same missions over and over. And of course the big part of that is playing with friends.

I got the achievement for finding 50, but there are still a handful or so I don't have according to bungie.net.

Unlocking the ghosts becomes increasingly irritating the more I find them, because it really hammers home how lacking Destiny is in the story department.

In particular, the cards about Thorne and the Ishtar Collective. It feels good to have found them and read what they have (which is really good btw) but it's a hollow accomplishment.

The events also need to be worthwhile.

Since there is no subscription fee, Activision has little incentive for Bungie to keep rolling out free stuff to do that's cool rather than have that be DLC. Notice how all of the events so far (except the raid) are minor changes to existing places and mission types. It probably did not take that much effort to construct the Queen's event. I'm sure the hardest part was modeling the ship.

Anyone else playing Destiny less? - No, surprisingly.

by yakaman, Monday, October 13, 2014, 13:52 (3932 days ago) @ Avateur

I expected my desire to play to have been greatly reduced by now, but it has remained pretty healthy. I attribute that to the following:

  • Sadly, I'm only now starting to appreciate the rules and mechanics
  • I've just recently gotten 2 exotic weapons, and am busy leveling these for 2 builds
  • I've begun to appreciate Crucible a little more. I enjoy Control, but little else. This is fine, for now.
  • I have played, but not finished the Raid
  • The jumping, shooting, running, floating, killing mechanics are flat-out fabulous
  • I'm still only level 28

I don't know what it means - maybe only that I'm not done, but I'm almost done? Long term, Crucible will never approach Halo. Destiny playtime will get hammered by the MCC, especially if a few of my friends make the plunge and get XBox Ones.

I'm not sure CTF works so well with Destiny's "you have all your powers in all modes" philosophy. Sparrows for everyone complicates returning a flag. Snipers for everyone complicates things as well. No two person vehicle for flag carrier transportation really complicates things!

Oddball though would be a blast in Destiny! :)

but I'm going to have to cut back. I went nuts the other week when I hit 25 and DBOers were tackling the Raid on Saturday, and I haven't let up yet.

Got my first exotic bounty today, and today I've leveled up a Hunter to 10, and that was a lot of fun, actually. I'm playing the game solo, and it's great to be able to look around as much as I want without worrying about holding someone up (I'm open to being joined by like-minded players who are building up low-level characters). I wish I'd been more open to playing solo originally. (I did play some, but I felt this pressure to find people, and to level up.) With my high-level character, content I've played before feels like new content on the higher difficulties.

I'm relaxing. I'm savoring what's good, and keeping my fingers crossed that they are playing a very long game in terms of the story, which was my biggest disappointment.

Between six characters, I see myself having plenty to do before the expansion packs, and lots of things to try and experiment with. Heck, I'll probably have plenty to do until Destiny 2 comes out. There are other games I'm looking forward to (Halo 2 Anniversary!), but Destiny already feels like it has settled in as my gaming comfort food.

I can't get my head around the massive amount of time people have spent with this game, and how so many of these same people are surprised or disappointed that their interest level has dropped off. I mean, it's fine that your interest level has dropped off. That's your brain telling you to find something it finds more stimulating for you to do. Go play Shadow of Mordor until you get bored with that. Better yet, read a book. My bet is that when you come back to Destiny, it will be better than it is now, and even if not, it will feel better because you took a break.

The amount of time I put into Halo games absolutely demolishes what I've put into Destiny, and it wasn't until the disaster of Halo 4 that my Halo interest was turned off (and even then I found plenty of time for Reach). It's not that I've played Destiny so much in such a short amount of time. It's that the game seriously has run out of things for me to do or to find interesting. I can still have fun with it, luckily, but there's no real draw anymore.

Part of what kept me replaying H1 and H2 over and over and over was the amazing story (especially in H2's case because campaign gameplay and linearity really sucked in many, many ways). Destiny's replayability comes almost entirely based on friends, in my opinion. And my friends have all come to these same conclusions. There's nothing secret or mysterious left to uncover. There's no real story here. Just a lot of empty promises and non-events that pretend to be events. Crucible is great, but it's severely lacking in draw-power after a while (Schooly Was Right). No custom games (Schooly Was Right). I could continue, but it's obvious. Halo was a complete package (not Halo 4). Destiny is not.

No thanks to Shadow of Mordor (even though I'm hearing awesome things about it). Believe it or not, I'm actually reading through three books right now, and that's been happening while I've been playing Destiny so much.

I'll come back to Destiny later this week. It will be a blast. That blast will basically be my "fill" for a week or two. Like I said, the game is tons of fun, just not fun enough to keep coming back to daily or potentially weekly at this point. And MCC is on the horizon, and while I'm seriously not looking forward to multiplayer right now (believe it or not), I can't wait to get campaign co-op on with buddies.

My ragtag group of idiots and I haven't even thought about doing the Raid yet, though 3 of the four of us are level 27 now. The real problem we're having is finding an extra 2 members who haven't already beaten it/are willing to let us figure it out as we go. Hell, even one of my 4 wants to just read a guide and cheap our way through it.

Instead, we've been levelling alt characters. Which I'm still having a fair amount of fun with. That and collecting ghosts, hunting gold chests, and generally making a mess in The Crucible have kept me busy most nights since it came out.

And I haven't even got an Exotic Bounty to keep me busy yet!

Of course the amount of time you put in to Halo games dwarfs the time you've put into Destiny. Same for most people here, probably. I've played no game as much in so short a period of time as I've played Destiny, though.

I'm finding the harder difficulties very challenging, and I'm enjoying playing story missions on easier settings just to explore the world more than I did the first time through. I'm getting a better picture of how deep the lore of the game goes, but I admit, this isn't as much in game (although listening to people in the Tower can be intriguing).

I thought the Halo 2 story was kind of mess, honestly, but I played it tons and enjoyed it immensely. I can't wait for Halo 2 co-op either. Hit me up!

To elaborate, I was referring to playing the Halo games in a one month time way more than my Destiny play time. I wasn't comparing overall game time, especially since all of those have been out for years. :P

Yeah, I can't count the lore. The Grimoire cards are pretty cool, but without them, there's just no lore in game.

Definitely will! I'm curious to know why you thought H2's story was a mess, too. It was so well done. Bungie knew what three acts were and everything back then.

Anyone else playing Destiny less?

I'm probably not your target audience but I stopped playing weeks ago. I find the game to be aggressively boring and once I had finished all the story and strikes I had no desire to replay any of that content.
