Open Source Destiny Servers (Destiny)

When Bungie moves on to other things they should release an open source backend that we can run on a PC and we and our friends can connect to to carry on playing.

I imagine that the next game they make will be made so awesome that they wont worry about people preferring to stick to Destiny.

... carry on playing.

What makes you think they'd stop supporting Destiny?

The only reason Halo 2 went down was because MS shut down live for Original Xbox. Bungie even kept a lot of the stats.

That would be awesome, but I imagine the destiny servers are in reality segmented into many different subsystems that wouldn't exactly be easy to assemble into one monolithic server, but I could be wrong.

It would cost them money forever.

What if MS and Sony do the same for Destiny?

Game could be patched to connect to another IP address, a web service that holds character state. Then game requests and updates are handled by that server instead of Bungie's.

They don't have to provide a serve to service the entire world. Just provide servers for a group of subscribers. Let service providers make money for large scale service. Let smallish groups of individuals share a server for free.

What if we chip in and have a DBO clan server once Bungie moves on...

What if everybody in a clan installs server and leaves a port open on their PC whilst game world is up?

Yes, having Destiny live forever is a nice idea... but at one month in to a "ten year plan" don't you think you're being a bit premature? Especially with talk of Sony / Microsoft shutting down their online services?

This is only viable if they release a PC version.

I dunno. You have some very big games coming out soon, which are likely to pull folks away from Destiny. You know how Activision is. If the DLC packs don't sell well, it may not bode well for Destiny's future.

Bungie said in the last Weekly Update that Destiny is holding its population better than Halo 3 and Reach combined at this point in their lives. Hopefully that continues and leads to the continuation (and improvement!) of Destiny.

The server would run on a PC, the game would connect to an IP address entered into a screen in the settings UI.

That means nothing. They have four consoles supporting this game at this point. We'll see how well it holds when CoD and MCC come out. I'm willing to bet that population numbers magically stop being released after that point.

Destiny being spread across a larger user base is a fair point, but "our new game is being played a lot more than our old ones were" is too. Least you could do is acknowledge that instead of calling it nothing... :/

...and you only have to look at DBO to know that their previous Halo audience could be spread across at least 3 of those consoles. It's hardly as if 4x the consoles means 4x the potential audience.

Comparisons are difficult to make, but it's the data they have and it looks good.

Like MS or Sony would let you do that. Dream on.
