So Machinima decided to misquote me in a video they made. (Destiny)

I wrote sort of a rant/analysis of Destiny over on NeoGAF a couple days ago, it was a bit of complaining, a bit of bad humor, and a bit of suggesting improvements. Nothing that already hasn't been said here. Anyway, the fine folks who run the Machinima youtube channel apparently read (or misread?) my thread, and decided to take a jab at me in one of their recent videos by putting words in my mouth.

Can you sum up what they did for us? I don't really care to give them any hits on their video...
Also, I liked your "little rant" over on NeoGAF.

They referred to me as that guy who "played for 100 hours and was MAAAAAD!" that I played it for so long only to hate it and ask for my money back. None of which I did, of course.

I saw your rant and thought it was ridiculous and you used too many words to prove it. Machinima said most of what I was thinking and it is not surprising to me they laughed at you.
100 hours! You should have to pay Bungie more money for Destiny. If all games were valued at the cost divided by average time played, Destiny is a bargain.
Quote from GAF. "They took my time through giving me a goal and forcing me to repeat content an absolutely insane number of times, rarely if ever giving me what I actually need to feel like I've accomplished something."
It took you 100 hours to finally realize you weren't having fun? You were forced? Sure, maybe a few dozen times but then you should have put the game down.
If you had said, I played the game 10 hours and put it down for good, I think you wouldn't have been laughed at.
Have you put the game down?
BTW, I have issues with Destiny too but the reality is, last night our 3 hour session of Halo was filled with discussions on Destiny. It is that good.

So yeah, I'm going to go ahead and disagree with you completely about the whole one hundred hours thing. Progression based games are specifically designed to tap into particular psychological rewards (achievement, getting ahead, social recognition and status). This is why you can end up playing a loot treadmill game for hours on end, even if you're not having "fun". What you crave is the psychological reward of the progression.
Good games will allow you to have fun while at the same time getting that sense of achievement or social recognition (World of Warcraft, Diablo 2, maybe grudgingly Diablo 3 at this point).
Not so good progression games end up feeling like a bad relationship that you just can't quit because you don't want to give up the sex. They aren't having fun, but they can't quit the psychological rewards that they crave. Coincidentally this is a big reason why World of Warcrack can be so hard to quit for a lot of people.
*Ding* "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" ... ahhhhhh yessss, social recognition, that hits the spot.

Who the hell plays games for social recognition? If you want social recognition, you should throw parties and date the prom queen.

Lots of people, believe it or not. Our monkey brains crave this.
The main reason I started speed running with Halo 3 was because I could finally share the results through the file-share.

Why I didn't post it here

I knew someone was going to be defensive about Destiny so I opted not to post my writings here initially.
I came to that conclusion after spending weeks replaying the Vault of Glass. I enjoyed playing the game up to that point, but once I saw the progression end and there was no incentive to keep me playing anymore I decided to write about how I viewed that system as a whole. It doesn't matter how long you played for. I'm not familiar with loot based games like MMOs or Diablo in general, so I tried exploring it to its furthest lengths before making any conclusions.
My mentioning of the time spent was not a complaint that I wasted my time. It was stated to show that my opinion had been formed over a long period of time getting to know the game and how it works. I had fun playing Destiny. Yes, I have put the game down in all instances where no one is specifically asking me to play with them. It took me that long to be sure how I felt about the game wasn't because I was missing something, and I wasn't just referring to some half-informed impression of what the game was.
I don't really feel like I deserve to be laughed at for that.
