I had been avoiding spoilers, so apologies if this has been discussed before. This guy's post about the Vault of Glass does a great job explaining why guardians are raiding it.
I read something very similar a couple of weeks ago. On Reddit too, I think.

New to me. I wish this kind of information was more accessible in the game.
WHY. IS. THIS. NOT. IN. GAME.
All they need is to put this kind of story into the game, without boring exposition of the narrative, and that will fix so much.
I can't wait to play the Raid again now.
