SO, I am the only one who is completely unable to use shotguns in the game? I have gotten a total of one one-hit-kill in all the games I have played in the crucible and probably just a handful of other kills with shotguns.

I had to switch to using Fusion Rifles for close range because anytime I whipped out a shotgun it meant my imminent death.

I haven't used them since the patch, but once I got a handle on the range, they seemed great in single player. Haven't tried one in competitive, because I figured that I would just get my butt kicked.

I've faced a couple players who were good at getting slide kills with a shotgun, but once I realized that, I started to just backpedal into open areas, which worked pretty well. Frankly, I wish the effective ranges for shotguns were a bit longer, but they are handy if you realize that it's basically a melee weapon. So any level with a lot of blind corners is going to be good for it. I hope they don't reduce the range on the fusion rifle. The ones with tighter grouping seem effective at medium range at best, and there aren't really any other weapons in that range except auto rifles, which can remain effective much further, too.

He mentioned crouching to get off the radar. Is it a motion sensor, like Halo? If I just stand still, will I be undetected, or do I have to actually crouch? Which makes me wonder if I can move while crouched without showing up.

AFAIK: Stood up, you're constantly on the radar. However, crouched down, you are only intermittently 'pinged.' Some people may miss it.

You pop on radar every 3 seconds. It's enough to catch players unaware or change position quickly just before engagement.

crouching slows down the pulse on radar. If you're not moving you are off the radar for about 3 sec, less time if crouch walking so it gives you a small window to try and make a play. If you duck when someone is on the outside range of the radar they will naturally think you are going away from them and start to charge towards you. Crouching does not work if you are in close range (center of the radar) it will just continually pulse.

TLdr: crouching keeps you off the radar for a small amount of time. less if crouch walking.

Hmm, I wonder if that's to discourage camping, because they could have just kept it so that not moving keeps you off the radar entirely.

I'd think so. When EVERYONE can have a shotgun at all times something needs to be done...

I like the balance of the radar. It gives you just enough info to know where people are coming from but not enough to tell you where to aim or how many people are there. I agree with all the power weapons and super abilities you need the radar to let you know if people are close. It also keeps the pace of the game up.

What about when cloaked? Do you show up on radar?

It reduces the tracker's ping from once every3seconds to 5
