Non spoiler advice I wish I had before trying the Raid (Destiny)

by Mariachi @, Kentucky, Friday, October 17, 2014, 07:49 (3930 days ago)

So the Raid was both Amazing and utterly frustrating for me. I am so glad that I went into without any spoilers of what it contained. Figuring out our way through it was very difficult but immensely satisfying. The teamwork and coordination needed was fantastic. However, there is one big piece of advice I wish I had gotten before I went into the Raid. Let me explain.

When the Raid was first unlocked for everyone, I was a level 12. It was made perfectly clear that you needed to be a level 26. At first I just figured that I would get to 26 eventually and then play the raid. But then I started seeing people post about how great the Raid was and how much fun it was. I saw numerous posts from people declaring that figuring out the Raid and working together was the best part. And then I watched as the average time to beat the Raid dropped from 10 to 12 hours down to 2 to 4 hours. I decided then that I really wanted to go into the Raid fresh and unspoiled and with a team that was equally unspoiled. And for me that meant that I needed to get to level 26 as quick as possible, so that I could play the raid while there might still be people who hadn't done it already to play with me.

So I finished the story mode and had gotten to level 20 and set my sights on level 26, which meant I needed at least legendary level armor. I got lucky and got two pieces of legendary armor from the Queens wrath event and I had enough strange coins to purchase an Exotic chest plate from Xur, then spent my vanguard marks to buy the last piece i needed from my Vanguard. Got everything leveled up to 26 and then got a team together and went after the Raid.

It was a blast, but I must admit, I spent a majority of it very frustrated. And about halfway through the raid, I realized my mistake. I had been so focused on just getting to level 26 by getting armor, that I had completely forgotten about my weapons. I should probably mention that I have yet to get a single purple engram or exotic bounty of any kind. EVERY weapon I had was Rare or Uncommmon. And even maxed out, they were basically useless in the raid. This hit me really hard during one of the fights when it took two full clips of my hand cannon to down an enemy. Then moments later I watched my teammate one shot an identical enemy with his hand cannon. I watched this happen over and over. For every critical hit I got on one of the bosses, I was dealing 298 damage. My teammate was dealing several thousand.

So while I could definitely help with strategy and figuring things out. I was basically useless at taking down enemies. And I am sure my teammates were getting tired of me constantly asking for help to take down every enemy. So, If you are almost ready for the Raid. My advice is this: Stay unspoiled, you won't regret it. But make sure you go in packing firepower. Get yourself some legendary weapons first.

Tl;dr Legendary armor will get you to level 26 and into the raid, but Legendary weapons will get you through the Raid.

And as a quick addendum to that, the right kind of weapons will get you through the raid. My fully upgraded 300 atk pulse rifle was pretty worthless compared to my fresh-out-of-the-box, 248 atk legendary handcannon.

Agreed. 300 attack Invective can drop a Minotaur in one magazine while Praetorians just need an extra tickle. My 260 attack void (!) damage Comedian goes pew pew lol pew.

I feel like my 280 pocket infinity would've been a lot more useful with the full clip in this particular case. Miss you, 12 shot mag.

I thought it upgraded to 8 rounds?

Still, I believe it only does Arc damage. VoG might as well stand for Void only Guns.

It used to upgrade to 8, the recent hotfix switched that perk to fast reload so it max's at 3. Solar damage, but it still DPS's like crazy and aside from minotaurs there aren't many shielded mobs in normal vault (no idea on hard mode).

It seemed like most, if not all, Harpies were shielded on Hard (at least during the Templar). Forget if they're Arc or Void too, but I want to say they had a blue-ish shield.

If they are Arc, it just makes me want the Raid's HC (or I guess even the Shotgun) even more.

That shotgun dropped for me this week, and it is a' so spice.

My apologies for last night. A storm was messing up my internet, and soon after those messages it died completely. Pass word on to whomeever was on the right side with me? The last thing I heard were his cries of despair!

Next time! You gents were fun.

Will do! We're hoping to try again today or tomorrow on our secondary characters. Can't really give any hard times though :\. However, one of us should still have a Hard checkpoint if you want to stick around for cheesing Atheon. I want that HC dammit *_*. I'm all for doing Hard legit to get it, but my Hunter still needs either some Raid or Exotic gloves to get to 30. So yeah, I'll be cutting the cheese until then.

No problem. Always feel free to hit me up, and I'll join if able. :)

Harpies aren't shielded on Hard, they just have yellow health bars. If you mean the legions that is.

A reason why this is important

A Minotaur with full health and a Minotaur with just a little bit of health have no difference in their combat effectiveness. They'll each murder your face just as hard. When you strike, strike once!

Or just use a Jacobs

I think this is a pro tip for life in general.

The first time I went in I had lvl 25 armor. That wasn't a big deal, honestly. I think you could easily go in at a lower level and if you play conservatively, be OK. (On normal mode, that is)

I too, learned quickly that my Rare AR was a POS compared to the shields of a Praetorian though.

D'Oh!

all good advice!

I have a 280 77 Wizard that 2-shots the minotaurs with ease. Just a fantastic weapon, though admittedly I got a lucky mod on mine for "faster charge time".
