Things addressed:

- Why Bungie is making balance changes to weapons “There should be no single answer for how to win in Destiny.”
- Buffs to the Mythoclast "... we intend to raise Mythoclast's attack value above and beyond the other exotics."
- Baby Bumpers and Timestream selection changes for Atheon coming next week "Knocking a boss off a ledge is a bug."

Atheon change...

I'm torn between liking the way you could assign a role and get good at it, and my love of anarchy, and telling people that they should have a taste of all of the different roles that the Raid has to offer. It's gonna be a challenge, but you folks need to start learning how to use that shield...

Not really - At most only 4 of the raid members need to be able to use the relic since 3 people will always be sent into the portals.

There's a huge damage difference in the shield between 26-30. In my runs, we never let anyone below a 28 have the Shield, for multiple reasons.
One, they can take more damage, which is important considering you have the important item. Two, they can deal more damage, which is important considering you have the important item.

The thing about making it random is all it will do is making finding raid groups harder for new players. As it is right now, the experienced players can do the timestream, or drag a new person with them while they get the shield (as was done with me my first time). Now it being random it's going to be IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO EVERY ROLE IN ATHEON. WE DON'T WANT YOU.

I'm glad everyone will get a taste of it now. Yeah it may lead to a few wipes at first, but that's part of the process :)

I'm running my first ever Raid tomorrow. I don't know how to do any role yet. I'm betting Bungie still wants me to try. :)

- Why Bungie is making balance changes to weapons “There should be no single answer for how to win in Destiny.”

Then why is there only a single way to get to level 30? If that's Bungie's philosophy, either raid gear should give the same light as other legendaries, or there should be other high light legendaries, maybe from Iron Banner for example.

Right now there IS a single answer for how to win. Do the raid until you get the raid set.

I am also at a loss as to how 'farthest from Atheon' could be a bug in target selection, given the incredibly specific nature of the calculation versus it being random.

Your level is far from a guarantee you'll win, and they're working to make the weapons and armor from the raid not as overpowering.

If it is a bug (and I have no basis to say it isn't), there are a thousand ways it could be a bug. I think it's probably the fact it uses that "largest-distance" method instead of a "random-chance" method, which would probably be a flag somewhere that's set wrong. (This presumes the "target the furthest players" routine is used somewhere else in the game; otherwise it's either only there for this fight, which makes it less likely to actually be a bug, or it's not supposed to exist at all, which makes it a bigger bug than just using the wrong method.) Now, not catching it, that seems like a blunder; it takes a lot of testing to make sure something is random in practice, and maybe they didn't do enough.

But neither is using the Suros Regime. Right now, the small armor advantage of the level 30 raid armor is useful, but if future raids are set at 30 for a hard mode (though I don't see why they would be), completing a raid enough to get a full set of armor would be practically the only way to win.

True. I do figure or at least hope that will change eventually. Currently, I have no plans to run the raid over and over or ever run it on hard so I'd like an alternate path to 30.

My guess is either Bungie underestimated us by figuring furthest away was a good enough approximation, or things had to ship and furthest away targeting was working while random wasn't yet.

Because it's not consistent. Sometimes it doesn't pull the three farthest, as we have occasional times where it pulls a random third rather than only the rear group.

I was running the Raid on Hard, and we were getting weird bugs that I haven't encountered on Normal; sometimes only two people would be teleported, once it was only one person pulled into the past, and once the guy closest to Atheon got pulled for some reason. The countless problems caused half the group to disband, and we had to recruit new folks just to finish it... Odd run.

Bungie is clearly in over their heads.

by Riceamike, Friday, October 17, 2014, 21:46 (3929 days ago) @ Korny

I just actually had a bad run with Atheon with glitches and bugs and still I don't know why they're making it random. With the strategy involved with fighting, sending people with Oracle Killing guns to the portals and letting others deal with Supplicants...

My run just now had glitches everywhere. 4 people got teleported, 1 person got teleported.

And then none did. You know what? Bungie is under Activision somewhat. How about they go to Blizzard and ask them if they'd ever add randomization elements to their raids. They'll laugh loudly.

The planning is what gets you through. What, you think it's alright for everyone to just hold the equip button and see who gets the shield first? Some people just aren't good with it. Even a few seconds of WHO GETS IT? can wipe a team.

I'm so close to calling it quits on this game, I swear.

It's been stated by the Raid's designer twice now. First in the interview a day or two back and now in the most recent Weekly Update. At this point you're just refusing to accept the reason given. :(

The planning is what gets you through. What, you think it's alright for everyone to just hold the equip button and see who gets the shield first? Some people just aren't good with it. Even a few seconds of WHO GETS IT? can wipe a team.

What? A team can't make some kind of plan for this new twist? Maybe have an understanding of which of the six team members is the best and worst to grab the shield? Or maybe have an "I've got it!" system? This doesn't sound like the insurmountable problem you're making it out to be, but then I haven't done the Raid yet... Maybe it is?

Bungie is clearly in over their heads.

by Riceamike, Friday, October 17, 2014, 22:08 (3929 days ago) @ Ragashingo

It really is an issue. Having just one new person at Atheon can slow things down so much. There's a reason it took the first team 10 hours to do it.

When Bungie removes the strategy and ability to plan and set players aside for certain tasks AS IS TEND TO DO IN ALL RAIDS EVER, I will almost guarantee that Hard Mode VoG will become even more frustrating to do.

I think part of the problem is that switching weapons is difficult in Destiny. The outside team is going to have a very different weapon set than the inside team. Outside is handcanons or scout rifles to take the supplicants, inside is Auto Rifles for the Oracles.

If it were to be Random, you'd have to always be switching to the equip screen. There's no fast way to switch between weapon loadouts, so I think it's a bad idea all around. If switching were easier, it might be okay.

Had to come back to this old topic to comment that this is a very valid criticism. Building your weapon loadout based on what you plan to do in the raid is a very good design outcome. Requiring people to be ready to play any role is also good design. But in this particular instance those two have a bit of a conflict.

This is going to suck hereon out. Gotta level my vision of confluence, it definitely just became the most important weapon in my arsenal. This is another instance where that AR nerf is having some unfortunate consequences, PvP making life tough for PvE again.
