Baddies motivations (Destiny)

I've been thinking about the motivations of our enemies, and realized that there is not a coherent motive or driving force for our enemies as a whole. We have the Darkness, of course, but separately we have the Cabal, the Fallen, the Hive, and the Vex, and not a single one of them fits with another.

So, why are they here? Here are some thoughts:

The Darkness
Much as been discussed regarding the Darkness, it's true nature, and it's potential motives. A natural counter to light, ying/yang, Cane/Abel, matter/anti-matter. The possibility of both as amoral entities. Do they need each other? Are they products of a natural universe? Are they higher-dimensional (4D) entities, and what we see simply their 3D manifestation? Does the Darkness eat light? Are they Predator/Prey? Here's the million dollar question: would the Darkness have ever bothered humanity if the Traveler had not come? I say, no.

The Vex
We know that they now worship the Darkness, but that this is a relatively recent development. Right? Or not? They exist out of time, but yet have only recently discovered the Darkness? Does that mean Light/Darkness exists in only some of the multi-verses? They've been around forever, they will be around forever, they've got dormant layers in most (all?) of the planets in the solar system. But what do they want? Are they post-human entities from another reality? Nothing but questions here.

The Hive
They look to be sourced from the Fallen, corrupt and twisted. How? Why? When? They do seem tightly associated with the Darkness. It's my impression that they are in league with, or directly influenced by, or are of, the Darkness. In my mind, they are the outcome of a Darkness/Traveler war in the Fallen's home system. They are what happen when the Darkness wins. They are fodder for their lord. Which means...

The Fallen
...the Fallen are the roaming survivors of the lost war against the Darkness. They are the Dead Orbit faction from their home system. Why are they here if they do not serve the Darkness? There's no better way to find habitable planets than following the Darkness, which follows the terra-forming Traveler. Aren't they afraid of the Darkness? No, because they are no longer of the Light, they no longer serve the Traveler. They are transparent to the Darkness. They are here for whatever they can scavenge, or they are here to aid in the destruction of the Traveler and it's ilk, and who knows how long they've been doing this.

The Cabal
Maybe, like the Fallen, they are survivors of a lost system. However, I don't get the impression they've ever been touched by Darkness or Light. If so, where are the darkness-consumed Cabal (i.e. Hive)? Maybe the Traveler never made it to their system, or maybe even they fought off the Traveler (although this seems unlikely). Maybe they are what they seem: expansionist armies looking for more territory/conquests. Like the Fallen, they'd be transparent to the Darkness, and could safely follow along as the Darkness/Traveler bounce from system to system.

I get the feeling that neither the Cabal nor the Fallen seem overly concerned with the Darkness, although we do see them fighting with the Darkness' agents, the Vex and the Hive.

Do we ever see Cabal fighting Fallen?
