An idea for a future Exotic Heavy (Destiny)

by kornman00, Friday, November 14, 2014, 20:54 (3885 days ago)

What if there was a Exotic Heavy (probably a Rocket Launcher) which buffed the player with a Martyrdom-like (CoD) perk? When you die, with the weapon readied, you would drop a grenade (of the same type which your character uses). Call it your "Plan D"

Some other caveats to this, for balancing purposes, could be that the weapon also requires ammo for the ability to work. So it wouldn't be enough to just pull out your empty "D" when you see a Bladedancer prancing your way. You would have to have at least one rocket (or maybe it's a grenade launcher posing as a RL?) available. You would of course still drop that heavy ammo for your killer to later reclaim and use against you, but there's still the chance your dropped grenade denied them such an immediate pleasure.

I can imagine this being particularly gamechanging (in terms of matches) with Defender Titans and their suppression grenade. That pesky prancin Bladedancer? He may have got the drop on you, but you'll be the one with The Last Laugh (another potential name, lolz) when they're dropped out of their super and surrounded by your fireteam. Shouldn't have brought that knife to a gun fight, mister...

Of course, it wouldn't just apply to Crucible. I'm sure we've all experienced times where we've been in the thick of battle in a Strike and we die, yet the minions of the dark decide to just sit there and shoot our orb/Ghost, making a swift revival a challenge for your teammates. With this Exotic, you could become a Firecracker (dropping another name here) and deal damage to the dark dwellers surrounding you to hopefully open a window for revival by your teammates. Got a Striker Titan that somehow found him/herself succumbing to the darkness? I'm sure a Flashbang would come REAL handy in stunning the offending baddies.

I can only imagine this somehow saving a close-call match or Nightfall. Especially if the latter uses the same burn as your grenade. You're the last fireteam member alive, with the boss (let's say the he's the Archon priest prisoner dude) still standing on a spec of health. Suddenly you find yourself in range of his 'melee' attack (the Archon's stomp), which drops you like a rock. You see the death timer start but all of a sudden, bam, the boss starts to deres/vaporize and everyone is magically revived and the fight is won!

What say you, DBO? Originally I was thinking of this as an Exotic armor buff. However, I thought it should be applicable to any class. If that were the case, it would require each class to have it's own variant, much like how the Warlock and Titan have that chest which gives them an additional grenade. So for the sake of Keeping It Simple, Stupid, I thought rolling with a weapon would be better and help balance the perk better (eg, requiring the rarer Heavy ammo and the weapon itself to be readied).

Oh, some lore for the weapon? Right, gotta keep that Grimoire in mind. The perk could be from some Golden Age time where the operator was assigned sensitive gear/data that required it to become FUBAR in the event of death or disconnect so others couldn't use the gear/data. Maybe the Cryptarchs haven't yet fully reversed the actual technology that makes the weapon not require ammo for the perk to activate. So that's why it currently needs ammo in-game: it's a kludge :p

I like the idea especially when you consider all the grenade types in the game. Perhaps this could even be a perk or ability of a new third subclass? Or a perk for any weapon type?

Or maybe even make it a new weapon altogether like you mentioned the grenade launcher. I'd enjoy seeing another weapon type or two in the game. They all seem kinda plain.

Whip out your D in a tough situation?...

There's always been the dilemma of what flavor you want your badass in. Do you go to town on the badguys with a pump-action shotgun, or spread death and destruction with a double-barreled beast?

Ladies and gentlemen, I come before you to say "Is it too much to ask for both?"

Yes, it's a double barreled pump-action bullpup shotgun. A true brick of a firearm that would not be out of place in the hands of a Terran Marine. It is an object whose every facet is crafted to strike fear into the hearts of alien warriors and home invaders. And when it is held in the armored gauntlets of a Guardian, there is a right half and a wrong half of the universe to be standing in.

There are actually a few handcannons in this game that feel very similar to the M6D. Especially if you can get one with stability and range plus modifiers, along with Gunslinger perks.

Upgrades could be a choice between explosive tipped, long range, or tracking bolts.

Something like the secondary fire on the pulse gun in UT 99 where it shoots a beam of continuous energy would be cool for a heavy weapon.

Splatter Gun

How about a heavy that emits a shockwave that accelerates foes at a blistering rate into walls and off ledges? If they hit a wall, they are splattered killing them instantly. The shockwave is released in a spherical shape radiating away from the player and can penetrate walls and floors. Similar to a fusion rifle it's battery powered, but instead of charging it by pulling the trigger, it charges automatically between shots.

The gyrojet pistol; a lightweight pistol that fires miniature rockets, the punch of a .50 bullet held in one hand and firing with almost no recoil. (It's absolutely crap at close range, because the rocket's still building up speed, but superb at medium range.)

Pretty it up, add some futuristic stuff like limited target seeking or something, and it'd make a dandy looking Exotic Hand Cannon.

-- Steve's name comes from his first encountering the concept (the '30s pulp Buck Rogers used a gyrojet in the 24th century) and the 1960s cost of each "bullet".

Totally forgot about this. A self destruct button would be amazing! Oh I'm gonna die anyway, sooooo I'll just take you guys with me. :)

Shooting the web/net would be sweet too. Maybe a feature that would block off a door way with a web!
