What needed to happen (Destiny)
Bungie needed to tell us the information regarding exotic upgrades in the patch notes, so players were better informed so as not to waste their exotic shards upgrading weapons pre-DLC, or else this functionality should have been rolled out on the day of DLC release.
Thankfully I have not used any shards, but I know people who have. I think if you turn in a fully upgraded weapon that was upgraded post patch but pre DLC, it should either waive the shard requirement, or else refund you your shard to the postmaster.

Agreed. The shard thing was a little confusing at first, but now it's all starting to make sense. The bungie.net post from today should have gone up on Monday.

Yep.
Telling us: "Here's a great new way to update weapons" one day then "Oh, you updated them already? Too bad!" was pretty lame. :(

Just wait.

We've got a third explanation inbound tomorrow.
-"Here's a great new way to update weapons"
-"Oh, you updated them already? Too bad!"
-"Naw, just kidding. Those shards are fakes altogether."

You joke, but it would be interesting to see Bungie add a hardcore option like in Diablo: when your character dies, he stays dead forever. Get to level 32 THAT way :-p Maybe the Hive Mythoclast is only available to hardcore players!

Just wait.
I'd do "If you die in a Darkness Zone you're dead" but not normal zones. It breaks too many rules. :p

Lol.
How'd you die? I drove my sparrow off a cliff…
Just wait.
Sad your character died in ultra hardcore mode? Grind it out on your secondary for approximately 83 in-game hours, obtain 52 Exotic Shards, 127 Iron Relic, and the brand new Blue Goose, and you can revive your old character with new abilities obtained from this ancient Hive ritual. Your Sparrow will also be immune from cliff-diving, with new built-in Atheon Baby Bumper ability that teleports you back onto land when you fall off a cliff.

Just wait.
"I thought it'd be safe to do backflips into the Hellmouth!" :)

Just wait.
WHEN YOU DIE IN THE GAME, YOU DIE FOR REAL! *sob*

Totally agree with this. I had a Mida drop yesterday (which I already have one of) and thought it'd be a great idea to shred it and max my Gjallarhorn. :(
Surely, someone at Bungie must have run into this same issue themselves. Exotic shards aren't a thing you get every day! Unless you're Korny, maybe.
Add Diablo III "Seasons" instead of going Hardcore.
Instead of a hardcore do seasons like Diablo III.
You start a new character at the beginning of a "season" and see how far you can level them up. Season characters don't get access to the vault, but special season only gear drops for them (maybe they get season gear instead of legendary drops). When the season is done, the character become a normal character and last seasons's gear gets added to the normal loot table. Time passes and a new season starts.
Open a fourth character slot, so people could create a season character. This would result in a race to 20 for the hardcore/dedicated players so they could start getting season gear. Each season could have an armor set and one of each weapon class.
Maybe this is what the Queen's event should be. Start a new character sponsored by the Queen and gain exclusive loot.
Man, I'd pay real money for that Sparrow
So many pointless deaths...

Ditto. I have, on at least two separate occasions, ended a late night march toward the "Earn 9000 experience without dying" bounty because I fell asleep at the wheel and drove my sparrow off of a cliff. I probably should have just gone to bed before that happened, but I was sooo close to completing the bounty :p
