DestinyRaider.net - Contributors & Feedback needed (Destiny)

by CruelLEGACEY @, Toronto, Monday, December 08, 2014, 07:57 (3879 days ago)

I wouldn't normally share a website so far away from completion, but this is something I'm hoping the community will want to be involved with. Figured I might as well invite people to jump in on the ground floor.

http://destinyraider.net

I wanted to make a website that was a comprehensive guide to Raids in Destiny. Rather than create a strict play-by-play guide, I wanted to give readers access to the best strategies and tactics so they can absorb that knowledge, then improvise and find techniques that work best for them.

The focal points of the site are going to be the walkthrough features. Each walkthrough article is going to outline best common practices, alternatives, branching paths, etc. I'll be using lots of GIFs inline to give readers visual examples, plus top-down "floor plan" maps that show ideal player positioning for the various battles.

In addition to the walkthrough features, I'm going to write posts that provide more specific resources and info: A class-guide to outline some of the specific roles each class can play in the raid, a post about the Relic and how to use it, etc.

For this site to work, I need to pull ideas from the community. I've added a Submissions page for people to post their own tips and strategies, links to new speedruns, etc. I'll be updating the guides and/or posting news stories based on reader submissions.

Here's the part where I ask for volunteers. If this sounds like a project you might like to help with, there are plenty of ways to do so. Most of all, I need video clips. I want to help people understand these raids from all angles, so the more clips I have access to, the better. Short, specific clips are preferable. "Here's 30 seconds of me wielding the relic like a ninja". Or "here's how to clear the jump puzzle as a Hunter". Those sorts of things.

If anyone is interested in helping out in more substantial ways, that would be great too. Maybe someone who's really great with the relic wants to help me write a post about it? Or a lore buff might want to help write a post about the story behind the vault of glass?

Beyond generating content, I'd love to hear general feedback. What kind of info would you like to see?

Love to hear what you all think. If anyone wants to contact me directly, you can send me an email:

Great idea! I'd certainly be up for some writing. Lore is my specialty, I believe I can make a good case and explanation of the uses of a Defender Titan in the Vault of Glass, and can provide comments on general strategy.

That's be fantastic! If you'd like to take a stab at writing about the lore behind the Vault of Glass, that'd be great. Maybe I'll get you to look at the Class guide with me once I start putting that together as well.

I'll be adding a "Contributors" page to the site, too. Let me know how you'd like to be credited :)

Really cool idea. We need a Cartographer.

Actual maps would be a great complement to UI navigation on the site as well as strategy tips. A map of the Templar's Well, for example, showing enemy spawning and suggested team placement for each phase.

I'd seen crude ones on Reddit. They would probably be the most valuable thing you could contribute to the community. There are so many Raid videos. Maps, man.

Thanks for the feedback Pete :)

I've got some cool ideas involving maps (animated versions showing player rotations, for example). I just need to figure out if I can pull decent maps from somewhere, or if I need to make my own from scratch.

I'm on the same page regarding video guides. They're great, but there are tons out there already. I do want to eventually do video guides for this site as well, but only if I can make something unique. I have some ideas for a multi-view video guide, cutting between several perspectives as well as including animated maps, with commentary. But that will need to come later on down the road.

I think you'll have to make your own map from scratch, at which point a bunch of websites will steal it and use it for their own purposes. :D

Multi-view would be perfect, showing 6 videos simultaneously, each one labeled "Alpha" "Bravo" etc. So a Raid leader could say, "hey, you're Alpha, watch this video, and do what he does."

Cutting between different perspectives could be confusing.

I think I could pull off a multi-view as long as I keep it fairly simple. 2 or 3 views, rather than all 6. Keep the screen split at all times, with 1 main view taking up most of the screen while the others stay minimized to the side. When it's time to switch focus to another view, it zooms out and fills the main window (a little like the Xbox One dashboard). Still, I haven't actually tried it. It might end up being way too confusing.

The main thing I want to do is help people get a better understanding of what the entire team is doing. That's where maps/multi-view videos are really helpful. If everyone in the team knows where everyone else is at all times, it lets people improvise when stuff goes wrong.

One thing I'd like is a guide to some of the uncharted areas, even if it's just how to get there.

Here's some UI ideas, because this is a cool idea and I'm stuck at work:

Main site, super simple. Select a Raid, bottom of page has links for LFG sites. Makes destinyraider.net a portal for Raiding.

Main Raid page, overview map and individual tasks/sections. Blue line indicates checkpoints. Concise top menu for non-strategy items--priority placement but easy to ignore.

Selecting a section brings you to the goodies, a placement map for that phase as well as video links for each player that come up in a popup. Written guide below.

is there a way to pull the maps out of the game, like Loftus does for Halo?

Would be nice to have 3D models of the maps.

Since you asked-

Step 1: Be titan
Step 2: get a running start
Step 3: float float float
Step 4: repeat as necessary until success.

That's a 38.6MB gif you've got on this page. At the very least, split it up to a single, static background and a series of gifs positioned over it.

You see, GIF doesn't have any inter-frame compression, so in every single frame the entire background is reproduced. Which makes the file size totally unreasonable. GIF's intra-frame compression is pretty awful to - it's designed for lossless graphics, not photograph-like images.

Anyway, this seems like a good idea. The Wikis are all crap, individual videos on yotube can't be updated to reflect bettering strategies and the updates.

Unfortunately I don't really raid much, and the only thing I was good at as was killing stuff, so I don't think I can help much with content :/

Not sure how useful I would be, only run 2 successful ones (the rest were me trying it by myself or with friends who got frustrated), but I would help if there is anything i could do.

This is awesome stuff, Pete. Really appreciate the suggestions.

In particular, I like the idea of giving more info than I do currently on the Raid "landing page". I'm going to completely rip out what I've got there right now and go back to the drawing board.

Regarding the walkthrough sections: Do you think it would be better to have the walkthrough presented in 1 long continuous page, or should each major section be given its own page with links listed on the landing page?

Thanks for the suggestions, RC. That giant GIF is really achieving any of the things I wanted it to, so I'm going to rip it out completely. That page needs a lot more info in less space.
Appreciate the feedback!
