I was watching my fiance play last night, and she ranked up her faction while turning in bounties, so she got a reward package to collect.

When she collected it, she was awarded an engram, piece of legendary armor, cloak, materials, and a vanguard commendation.

So, I would imagine that if you rank up with the cryptarc for example you might be randomly rewarded one.

I ranked up my Cryptarch (saved engrams in the vault until after the DLC popped), and his package contained only a Blue and a Purple engram... but the Purple did give me an amazing set of new legendary Gauntlets...

This flavor text alone makes my spire form--not to mention that the armor had the exact same perks as my previous gauntlets but now it has a higher max light level and defense stat.

I'm on the road and haven't got to play this week. Do engrams you saved from last week turn into post-expansion armor and weapons? I've got some legendary engrams I received last week that I have not turned in.

When I ranked up Dead Orbit last night I earned a Crucible Commendation in addition to some other stuff.

They certainly have a chance, yes. My vault was completely filled with blue engrams and 2 purple engrams. I got a new purple pulse rifle that I don't care for, a sweet looking Hunter helmet (Raku Vindicator), and the blues I discarded immediately but I saw some unfamiliar names in there

Yes and yes. Just remember you won't get an upgrade package until after you hit L3 of any faction

As far as I'm aware the base rewards haven't been changed, except that there will also be a commendation in that package.

It varies each time. Recently I got a legendary void damage fusion rifle, which was a FANTASTIC drop because that was the one damage type I didn't have yet, in a fusion rifle.

That's a bummer. I've received a fair amount of gear from vanguard, but it seemed like the faction rewards I got were rather lackluster, and usually just materials. Could just be RNG, it isn't a very representative sample size.

Strangely, all the armor I've picked up from Dead Orbit has been for different classes. I have an alt warlock who has ranked D.O. up to 8 now, and aside from Materials, he's received a Titan chest, arm and legs. No warlock armor though. That's it.

My very first exotic was from a rank-up reward package (Vanguard, probably). I got a legendary engram, which decoded to Universal Remote. That was back when legendary engrams were still a grab-bag that almost always ended up rare, so I was pretty happy.

A lot of people don't like Universal Remote, but I have a lot of fun with it.

How much range does it really get once you upgrade it?

I would estimate about twice the range of a normal shotgun, which is pretty good.

Impact seems a little low though. Not sure about spread, when going for head shots.

The RoF is very slow, so you gotta learn the kill distance when scoped in or your opponent will finish you off before you get a second shot.

edit: arguably, one of it's main perks is that you can use it as a PRIMARY weapon, so you can do a shotty\Sniper load out if you please, for example.

Sounds about right. It certainly isn't a scout rifle equivalent like the Grimoire card suggests, but it's noticeable.

Yeah. I don't think it does quite as much damage as the regular shotguns (though still enough to easily one-shot the smaller enemies). Its strength lies in being able to use it as a primary, and consequently almost never running out of ammo. Also, this:

Spread is definitely more focused when aimed. Enough to reliably hit a Phalanx's hand from medium range to stagger him, and one shot to the head to follow up.
