Gatekeeper In the Crota Battle (Spoilers) (Destiny)

Gatekeepers previously only spawned when a swordbearer is killed. Is it the same way in Crota's room, or is there a different method to spawn them this time?
Is it possible the gatekeeper only appears while the sword is active, then leaves?
Not sure, but he spawned up there after killing the first sword bearer. Also my initial excitement is diminished since he's behind a you-aren't-supposed-to-ever-go-here invisible wall. Perhaps simply and anti cheese measure.
