The Last Word--Proof of Balance (Destiny)
by Morpheus , High Charity, Sunday, December 14, 2014, 00:23 (3636 days ago)
Fucking christ, I'm losing it here. Every game of Crucible I'm forced to play for Bounties or what have you, everyone kills everyone in one shot or less with the Auto/Fusion/Sniper/Pistol The Last Word.
Bungie really has no idea what they're doing in terms of multiplayer.
How do I get The Last Word so I can cheat like everybody else?
I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about…

I'm losing it here.
Well, we agree on that much...
Every game of Crucible I'm forced to play for Bounties or what have you
Forced? Really?
everyone kills everyone in one shot or less with the Auto/Fusion/Sniper/Pistol The Last Word.
The Last Word cannot kill an enemy at full health in less than three shots. Fusion rifles, and every other weapon in Destiny, have to fire at least one shot to kill.
Bungie really has no idea what they're doing in terms of multiplayer.
Disagree.
How do I get The Last Word so I can cheat like everybody else?
Step 1: Calm way down and try to post with some small measure of accuracy.
I'll Invite You To My Next Word-A-Thon.

Forced? Really?
Yeah, really. Did--wait, I...did I spell it wrong? Let me make sure...
Ye--...ok, yeah, I checked. I spelled it properly. So no, there wasn't anything wrong with my previous statement.
The Last Word cannot kill an enemy at full health in less than three shots. Fusion rifles, and every other weapon in Destiny, have to fire at least one shot to kill.
If you upgrade it enough, ANYTHING can kill ANYBODY in one shot. The Sidewinder, the Copperhead, the Painted anything, the Suros everything...in fact, I myself am a proud owner of a 331 ass-tapping Thorn that can highly attest to that fact.
Step 1: Calm way down and try to post with some small measure of accuracy.
Done. Okay, what's the next cheat code?

What? The only weapons capable of a one-shot kill are shotguns, snipers, fusion rifles, and rockets. Upgrading the damage level of your weapon has zero effect in Crucible with the exception of the Iron Banner.

That's just impossible! All the upgrades for a gun are featured in the multiplayer. The same thing goes for armor, too! I have a Hunter alternate, and the combination of my armor and my subclass allows my Blink Strike to literally charge in less than a second. Of course, it doesn't do ANY damage in Crucible, but that might be why. My point being, weapon upgrades(the three shells in rocket launchers, the grenade/melee cooldown effects, the extra shot in the Pocket Infinity) are all there, PvP or not. There's no way that the Crucible is just skipping those power upgrades.
"Oh, we're gonna give them Firefly on this, let them have explosive rounds on that and just nix any attack upgrades." How much sense does that make?
You are not forced to play Destiny. (Are you?!)
You're absolutely right, I'm not. However, I find the single player, or PvE I guess--extremely enjoyable. Honestly some of the most fun I've ever had gaming. However, getting popular weapons--the aforementioned one-hit-kill weapons--require you to earn hundreds(thousands if you plan on getting more than one) of Crucible marks, obviously only obtainable through Crucible. Two per Word-filled-game is insufferable. No, I'm not forced to play Destiny. I do it by choice. But through that, I am forced to step into Crucible in order to have a slight chance of (not) getting something I want, or even need. Are you forced to buy the DLC? No. But you can't do the Daily or Weekly anymore, can you?
(well, Bungie fixed that, but regardless...)
Or get any of the new weapons.
I'm beginning to think of you as the boy who cried F-bomb.
Yeah, I'm crying out for attention. Everybody look at what I'm doin'!
Git gud
Who the hell are you? Let's pretend that that's English and assume you mean to say "Get good".
I am good. Nearly every team game I play, I get either "The Best Around" or "On The Bright Side", much like I did in Halo. I don't get everything I want like all the [REDACTED], but I still fight and end up high on the pyramid. But I've said it before: If you want to "git gud" at multiplayer, you have to "git gud" weapons, and to "git gud" weapons, you have to "git gud" at multiplayer. It's circular logic.
Regardless, I might just throw these exotic bounties away. Nothing good about Exotic weapons, am I right?

Yes, you're right. My current PvE loadout, in fact, has no Exotic weapons at all. Hezen's Vengeance rocket launcher, Murmur fusion rifle (my god, I'm in love) and A1...whatever scout rifle. Beats the crap out of any Exotic I currently have. I do use Invective once in a while to fill up my ammo, though.
(Granted, I'm still trying to level up Pocket Infinity.)

Part of being good is understanding how the game works. The attack number does not matter in standard Crucible.
"Oh, we're gonna give them Firefly on this, let them have explosive rounds on that and just nix any attack upgrades." How much sense does that make?
It keeps Crucible matches Fair & Balanced™. It allows someone just starting out to be competitive with those who have been playing for three months. Also, notably, some of the perks like Thorn's poison damage are drastically toned down for Crucible.

Today's daily is "A Rising Tide" the Mars mission where you go down to the subway. Everyone can do that. The weekly and nightfall will be doable by everyone on Tuesday. You can buy a variety of good weapons without touching the Crucible. Some of the best weapons in the game, like The Devil You Know, were Vanguard weapons.
I am good. Nearly every team game I play, I get either "The Best Around" or "On The Bright Side", much like I did in Halo. You have 18 "The Best... Around" medals and 5 "On The Bright Side..." medals yet have played 189 team games. That means you led your team roughly 12% of the time. That counts as "nearly every team game"? You've got a 1.01 K/D and a .97 K/D in the Crucible. That counts as good? Do you perhaps have a problem with being in error where the truth is concerned? Given your other blatantly false claims I'm not so sure you really understand how to play in the Crucible at all!
Regardless, I might just throw these exotic bounties away. Nothing good about Exotic weapons, am I right?

Ok, I made a mistake. I'm pretty sure it was 32 BA's, but either way, I'm still way off. I'm sorry. My brain had just been regressing all those other terrible one-sided games like bad touches. I think I have delusions of grandeur.
Given your other blatantly false claims I'm not so sure you really understand how to play in the Crucible at all!
You're damn right, I don't! For the past what, 18 years the shooters I've played, the only bonus or perk of a gun was being able to reload so you can keep using it! Now nine copies of the same weapon have 20 attributes! Why can't I just shoot somebody until they die like the old days?
Some of the best weapons in the game, like The Devil You Know, were Vanguard weapons.
I started playing Destiny in October. I can count on two hands all the times I've ever been killed by The Devil You Know.
It keeps Crucible matches Fair & Balanced™. It allows someone just starting out to be competitive with those who have been playing for three months. Also, notably, some of the perks like Thorn's poison damage are drastically toned down for Crucible.
Exactly. Thorn's poison damage. There's a reason people choose a gun that penetrates armor and deals damage quickly with each shot. There's a reason people choose a sniper that can eliminate an opponent, headshot or no. There's a reason people choose a gun that can fire five fusion rifle blasts in half a second. There's a reason people choose a shotgun that can deal damage from up to 12 feet away, and reloads quickly. There's a reason people choose a rocket launcher that can track an enemy, explode early in proximity, then burst into a bunch of smaller rockets that also track an enemy just in case he survived all of that. Even if I'm wrong about damage, I'm still dead on about the upgrades--they produce an unfair advantage in almost every case.
It keeps Crucible matches Fair & Balanced™. It allows someone just starting out to be competitive with those who have been playing for three months.
Here's what we're going to do. We'll find someone with a K/D Ratio of at least 2.5, and either a capture card or some way of recording an extended amount of content. We'll have that person start a brand new character, class of their choice. They complete the first Guardian Rises mission, then the second they can hit orbit, they go straight to Crucible; either playing through or skipping Control and Clash. I want to see them win their first Rumble match with just the two weapons they pick up in the first (two?) story mission(s). No exotics, legendaries, not even heavy weapons or Supers.
POST EDIT: In fact, they don't even have to win the game. A 1.7 K/D or higher OR a Merciless will satisfy me.
That happens, I'll swear to God and the Arbiter that I'll never ever complain about The Crucible again--on the forums, online, even in real life. And, I'll publicly apologize to each person here.
I may be a pariah, but I stand by my beliefs. And until I see some concrete reality, I'm not changing--no matter what my K/D is.
Are you high?
Are you working for Bungie?
Also, regarding being 'forced' into an Exotic bounty - I gave up on Thorn pretty quickly. It's requirements didn't fit my playstyle so I decided the gun wasn't for me and dropped it. I'd suggest the same if you're frustrated by whichever you're on.
I swear, this will probably be the last. If I make a Titan, I'll just make him share with my others. Unless there's gonna be an Exotic bounty involving kicking Luke's face into a steak.
This is a silly challenge.

Crucible is not balanced around a level 2 character with 2 guns and no abilities.
Quote from Ragashingo:
It keeps Crucible matches Fair & Balanced™. It allows someone just starting out to be competitive with those who have been playing for three months.
Now, you've been playing for three months, and using a new character--essentially just starting out--literally a blend of the two. It made sense to me.
In a way, it would be cool if for Destiny 2 Bungie had variations of the crucible. One version would be like Iron Banner is now, where level advantages matter and you can bring in your guns. The other version would have level advantages disabled, but have a limited selection of weapons and armor available to everyone. You would choose and save a loadout while the map is loading, and cannot take anything you have in with you. That's the most 'fair' it can possibly get given the nature of the game.
That's exactly what I want/wanted, and almost verbatim what I was griping about earlier. I absolutely and wholly agree with you on that.
It's not that – it's the way in every other post you curse like a sailor who just cut his arm shot off. A little profanity goes along way. None can go even further.
You're absolutely right. I apologize, I didn't mean to offend. I checked through my posts, and I never realized I swore that much. I do seem to get angry over the smallest things. I guess cursing somehow alleviated that anger for me when I got too angry, since I couldn't destroy or hurt anyone. I think it's a combination of that, and the taboo of it in itself. I was always told not to curse as a child, and I even created a swear jar--made insane bank around my father. They wanted me to stop doing that, but more and more of my role models disappointed me with severe hypocrisy. So, I think the fact that it's so wrong is where that extra dopamine comes from. So yeah, I'll make a note to keep my swearing to a minimum. I'll put up NSFW tags if I need to curse, but last time I did that, people were practically asking for porn. I'll just keep disappointing them.
Side note: I found this and I had to laugh at myself. I now realize I really do deserve every iota of stress and every tear of frustration that has birthed from this miserable mode.
Also, regarding being 'forced' into an Exotic bounty - I gave up on Thorn pretty quickly. It's requirements didn't fit my playstyle so I decided the gun wasn't for me and dropped it. I'd suggest the same if you're frustrated by whichever you're on. There's a lot more opportunities for neat guns in Destiny - no point in all of us having ALL the guns. :)
Yeah--I'm going to be dropping duplicate bounties from now on. But the Thorn is such an amazing weapon--especially in Single Player! Most high-level enemies can die in one shot with the residual effects--not to mention, I've never seen a magazine that big on a Hand Cannon! It's incredible! I'm giving the new version to my Hunter. I just HAVE to finish it!
Not running out where you can be shot helps a great deal. Not to be rude or a snob, but my advice is just to get better. I absolutely do not have the problem or frustration you are experiencing. Last Word has a low time to kill, but so do boatloads of other weapons.
I know, I do need to get better. It's just so frustrating when so many of my weapons and strategies just fail. I mean, my Thorn is really dependable, and I'm developing an attraction to my B-Line Trauma, but everything else is just so hard. I don't know what I'm doing wrong--even when my Fusion Rifles land a hit with every single projectile(in rare cases, even all headshots), they don't cause any damage--literally--it doesn't even impact their shields. Up close, from a distance, it doesn't matter! And whenever I do carry one, everyone rock-paper-scissors me with a Shotgun. The Comedian, The Found Verdict, The Judgement, The Hide-N-Seek, even the Sidewinder and Copperhead. I own The Comedian, The Verdict, and The Crash, and those only resort to old-school Halo 3 melees. The Snipers--don't even get me started on those. The reticule is so overwhelmingly "shaky"--if someone even points their gun at you, there's almost no way of getting an accurate shot. Even jumping messes up your line of sight! I find it entirely useless unless you camp and catch your opponent by surprise. You've seen my emblem. My Rocket Launcher tracks, but unless he's real far away, it'll home away from my opponent and make me look like an idiot. Meanwhile, everyone's got Truth and Galahorn. I'd spell that right, but I never ever see the weapon unless it's 10 feet up my [REDACTED]. Fired point blank by an opponent with no damage to them.
I suppose I sabotage myself, though--my sensitivity is like, 2. It's always been. And my strength of easily killing people who follow me, now seems to be a weakness of my own. I just want those last dozen bullets or so to finally kill him...
Machine guns, I actually have no complaint against. Except I guess, the Corrective Measure and Zombie Apocalypse What The [REDACTED] That Thing Has 47 Rounds. But here--here is my current Fight Sheet. Nearly all my spots are Yellow or Purple, save for the useless items I haven't deleted yet. What do you suggest I use to my advantage? What should I get rid of? What would you use if these were yours? What advice can you give? Is it Super Good? (Sorry, it was begging for it.)
I started playing Destiny in October. I can count on two hands all the times I've ever been killed by The Devil You Know.

It hurts. It hurts that it's made to look so easy.
But yes. I am.
I...I just suck. I fucking suck...
And the crazy thing is, the day you posted that, I got my own personalized experience myself. I was in a Skirmish match, and I was actually doing great. Terrific, in fact. I got my first(and now last) Reign of Terror. But of the seven times I died, almost each time a name came up--The Marshall-A. Literally a starter. And I got killed just as quickly as any other Auto Rifle. I had gotten more medals, kills, and victory than I had ever had in any other Crucible game, yet I never felt more lost and defeated. For I learned--through scoring so high in that game--that I am useless in multiplayer.
I'll post my apology in a separate reply.
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong...

Hopefully this isn't beating a dead horse, but I feel your pain. PvP was very hard (and still is hard) for me to get into. When I first dropped into it I just died, and died, and died. That's all that I did, spawn, run a little, see someone, maybe pull the trigger & then die. I felt that NONE of my Halo or PvE skills translated over, that I would just instantly die. It's gotten better as I ground to Iron Banner rank 4 and way more better when playing in a fireteam. Apparently over all time I'm a 0.73 kdr player, but I feel I'm currently a 1.0 kdr player now & I'm actually willing to take exotic bounties that require PvE.
I enjoy the Crucible the most when I'm running in a fireteam with a total of 3 or more people, otherwise it's just not much fun for me. Maybe that's because I'm not very good at it when running as a lone wolf.

Even if I'm wrong about damage, I'm still dead on about the upgrades--they produce an unfair advantage in almost every case.
This is actually true. Having guns with good perks really does help. I've seen Korny wreck using armor piercing for example, which lets you shoot through walls. That upgrade is really uncommon. You couldn't buy it on any guns (I think you can now with Dark Below). It only came on corrective measure, or if you got a random perk.
However, I feel as if it's really not that hard to get all these guns. You could have bought all these exotics from Xur, and the legendary guns you can get from quartermasters with decent perks. You can work with what you have and still do great. What good is Truth if your team never lets the guy using it get any heavy ammo?

From a technical standpoint, this is true. The key thing, though, is that everyone has a slew of perks that can make their weapons have an "unfair advantage" in key situations. Stuff like The Last Word and Suros have perks that accommodate most situations, but they're not one-size-fits-all on the field...

Yeah, the AP rounds on my Final Boss really suit my playstyle, and give me a huge advantage over other snipers when it comes to one-on-one encounters, but there are tradeoffs, such as low ammo and a crap impact rating (it's nearly useless in PvE) that would send players running for a better rifle, but it's fine for me. You can buy the LDR 5001 from the Vanguard, which has this perk. I kind of want it, but I'm too fond of my Final Boss...

Yup, the Vanguard weapons were all fairly simple to obtain, and the first wave were really, really good weapons. There are a few now that I like, but stat-wise, they seem to have been given a bit of a nerf...

Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (hope you grabbed your free PS4 copy) does a thing where they have Welcome Mat, Classic, and Regular modes. In Welcome Mat and Classic, you can't have custom loadouts. You play with the defaults of your class, and it's very balanced in the way that after a bit, you can anticipate enemies just by the sound of their projectiles or character noises.
In Regular mode, things get CRAAAAAAZY...
Destiny would benefit from a "Classic" playlist with set loadouts, Class defaults, and some traditional objective modes. That way people wouldn't have to cry about the Last Word, Suros, Verdict, or Thorn, and the more skilled competitive folks wouldn't have these people randomly on their team...

So, I loaded up my Lvl 3 Hunter, original Khostov and the first no-name sniper I got in the play-through. First match of Control on Rusted Lands. We won. Unfortunately I don't have a capture card or anything, and it's hard to not-level when you're playing. Over the course of my evening I leveled up to 7, but I never stopped using my starting guns. I admit that when I got my Golden Gun, I sometimes used it because this is my first Hunter and I wanted to try it out. It's fun!
Anyway, by the end of the night I was doing pretty darn good. Since I've little proof, I don't really expect anything, I just wanted to give it a shot. It was loads of fun, and I'm probably going to keep playing this way tonight in Iron Banner, just for the bitter bitter taste of defeat. Heh.

So, I loaded up my Lvl 3 Hunter, original Khostov and the first no-name sniper I got in the play-through. First match of Control on Rusted Lands. We won.
When I made my Hunter a week or so back, I immediately took him into a game of Crucible for lulz, using only the two starting weapons. I did alright, considering that I joined the game in-progress.
Even if I'd gone negative, I wouldn't be such a baby about enemy weapons having advantages over me... Also, I couldn't double jump, so the map navigation was a very interesting thing.

That's one thing that's taking me a while to get used to. Up to this point I've only used a Warlock and their glide. Having the more traditional double-jump has really hurt me in some instances. But in others it's proved to be invaluable.

Upgrading the damage level of your weapon has zero effect in Crucible with the exception of the Iron Banner.
Take a breath, and read more carefully.

Yeah, I'm crying out for attention.
It's not that – it's the way in every other post you curse like a sailor who just cut his arm shot off. A little profanity goes along way. None can go even further.

You should hear me cursing my old joints when I start moving around in the morning.
I don't post that here, and you should be glad.

Haha. You'll have to share online sometime. I'm always on the lookout for creative curses.

Wrong. You are not forced to play Destiny. (Are you?!)
If you upgrade it enough, ANYTHING can kill ANYBODY in one shot. The Sidewinder, the Copperhead, the Painted anything, the Suros everything...in fact, I myself am a proud owner of a 331 ass-tapping Thorn that can highly attest to that fact.
Wrong again. Your Thorn will never one shot an uninjured Guardian in any currently known Crucible mode. If I understand the Crucible and Iron Banner rules correctly it could have an attack rating of ten trillion and it would still need two head shots to kill.

If everyone can one-shot, balance has been achieved

It sounds like you're complaining that you think the game is not balanced, and yet your complaint is that every weapon can one-shot. Regardless of the truth of that statement (since it's not true), in a game where every weapon is a one-shot-kill, you're playing a balanced game. Balanced does not mean you can kill lots of people who can't kill you, it means everyone is on an even playing field. You kill one person, you die, repeat.
Now, Destiny PvP is only marginally balanced. Some guns are better than others, so that when players of equal skill meet, the one with the better gun will win. Those edges, however, are pretty small. I have a Shadow Price that reloads nearly instantly after a precision kill, and does bonus damage when reloaded after any kill, and has a 42 round magazine. Which means I chew through whole groups of people. But I very rarely get even a 2.0 K/D ratio despite almost always being the top player on my team.
My suggestion to you is to change how you play if you don't want to die as often. Strategize. Follow another player and use him as your bullet sponge. Corner-camp (I'll hate you for it, but it works sometimes). Use your heavy weapons with gusto!
Exactly which exotic bounty are you working on? Because you'll want to play differently depending on the goals.

I'll use my Hard Light or Truth at times in Crucible, but most of the time I use my purples, especially my Proxima Centauri II auto rifle - I love that thing. Just one gentle tap...
I find that sometimes I'll die by the same gun a lot, depending on what Xur has and apparent trends, but I don't find that I die more OFTEN because of them.
I've found that it's easy to die quickly in Crucible by any gun, but it's also just as often that you get to take someone out with a swift cleave to the head. Once I got used to the pace and brutal nature of it, I started to enjoy it a lot more, perhaps more than any Bungie multiplayer since the Halo 3 Beta seven years ago!

Not running out where you can be shot helps a great deal. Not to be rude or a snob, but my advice is just to get better. I absolutely do not have the problem or frustration you are experiencing. Last Word has a low time to kill, but so do boatloads of other weapons.
If you die and you see you have been killed by Last Word remember who that player is. Then don't get too close - Last Word is weaker at range. Ever hear "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me?" Just be like Bush and don't get fooled again.
