Anyone have any idea why they're doing it, or is it just for the lulz?

Attention. Pure and simple. Whether they admit it or not, the root reason is attention.
Kids who were never taught how to apply their energy and creativity to constructive ends, and weren't given enough positive attention for good behavior, will always find a way to get attention regardless of the source or reason.
