Where are my Lasers? [suggestion for the future] (Destiny)

Something I've been thinking about a lot lately. Are the weapons in Destiny a little too similar to each other? I totally understand the need for distinct classes. I get that we can't have hundreds of wildly unique weapons. But is it just me, or is there a lack of imagination to the weapons in general, particularly the exotics?

If the exotic weapons are supposed to be the best of the best, rarest of the rare, shouldn't they be a bit more than "just another Pulse Rifle with an extra perk"? To me, an exotic weapon should be instantly identifiable. It should look, sound, and feel unique. Legendary weapons should be best-in-class versions of the standard guns. Exotics should be like something from another planet.

A few of the exotics in Destiny achieve this. The moment someone pulls the trigger on a Mythoclast, everyone who sees and/or hears it knows someone is firing something special. But what about the rest?

Why doesn't Red Death fire cool red laser beams?

Why doesn't Plan C fire a charged bold of Arch lightning?

Why don't Icebreaker's projectiles leave an awesome-looking contrail through the air?

Why doesn't Truth fire a cluster of tri-rockets that swirl around each other as they seek their target?

Destiny is a game filled with awe-inspiring sights and fantastical locations. The weapons are cool, but the more I play the less excited I am about acquiring new gear. I've already got Gjallarhorn 2.0, Icebreaker 2.0, Mythoclast, Suros Regime 2.0, and a basket full of top-level legendary weapons. Like most of us, I have a short-list of guns that are the most effective. The only reason I would ever use something different would be if I find a gun that is a) even more effective, or b) is really cool & fun to use. At this point, yet another Scout Rifle with exploding headshots isn't going to do it for me. I want to see more weapons that look and feel unique.

What do you all think?

TL;DR - Destiny needs more laser guns.

I've had a similar complaint for a long time.

I'd love to have a grenade launcher, flame thrower, heavy sniper (looking at you No Land Beyond), Splaser, Call-in ordnance for some ground clearing bombs from my Ship, maybe a crossbow? Why can't we equip a silencer to certain guns? Heck, I'd love to be able to run around with a sword all the time also. As awesome as some of the guns are, there just seems to be a lack of variety.

Another thing that bothers me is the lack of Vehicle play, we get a few single person vehicles and that's it. I'd love to team up with my fireteam and run some enemies down. Surely 3 of us could commandeer a fallen walker for a little bit. Also, why can't I mount a dragon while on Patrol.

Destiny does a lot right. But variety of gameplay is not it. There's no need for stealth gameplay, there's no real vehicle play, etc... Why can't we assassinate characters? Why no interaction with wildlife? I'd love to go shoot some fish, bears, dragons, etc... while out on patrol. I'd be fun to fight off some crazy bear or saber-tooth tiger like you do in Skyrim. something similar to the KEEP IT CLEAN achievement in Halo Reach where you have to kill 7 Moa is a great little thing to add to make you interact with the environment more.

Even with those complaints... I still love playing Destiny.

I want a fusion machine gun that's just a steady beam once you spin it up. To balance it, it could overheat or perhaps have a shallow, slowly recharging battery a la Icebreaker. I'd love to go into Crota's End with it and melt whole groups of Thralls at once.

Riffing off your Plan C thought, how about a grenade that chains lightning from enemy to enemy as long as there's another in range?

I hope one of the weapons from the Cabal raid is a cluster rocket launcher like the ones the Colossuses (Colossi?) use.

Something like the Focus Rifle would be cool, especially with the reduced accuracy of auto rifles. Its damage output could be kept in check by a lack of crit damage instead of a big spread.

While we're at the Halo weapons, what about a Needler? Actually, just make it that one Fallen gun.

A special weapon that's not a weapon, it's some kind of brass knuckles thing that gives you unlimited special melee attacks as long as you have it equipped and have special ammo.

A rocket launcher that's got a single deep magazine and no reserve, along with good stability and RoF. You could burn high-health targets really fast but it wouldn't be exceptional otherwise. (No tracking, small blast radius.)

I love the heavy sniper idea. Single or maybe 2-shot, something like 4 rounds in reserve, overpenetrate built in, big crit modifier with even bigger base damage.

Just for kicks, what about a pulse sniper rifle? One of my favorite snipers in Mass Effect was the one with 3-shot bursts. Just a ton of fun to drill 3 rounds into a crit spot instead of 1. Needs to be really stable, though, so you can actually hit all 3 crits.

Most of these are probably awful. I just wrote down everything that came to mind. Suffice to say I agree that there should be a little more variety. Bungie's clearly not afraid of certain weapons being a standout (Ballerhorn), so more cool stuff wouldn't break the game in any way that's not already broken.

Hunters already have that: arcbolt grenade. It does exactly that. It chains up to 3 times, or 4 with lucky raspberry.

I think this collection of sentences puts you in a very, very small subclass of Destiny players. I don't have ANY of those weapons, much less all of them - and I think I'm about as well-outfitted as the average player.

I like finding/buying new stuff, because I'm NOT maxed out. I'm very, very far from running out of new gear excitement - and I think that except in the rarified camp you're in, that's probably the case for most of us.

You're totally right, although I still think the entire player base would benefit from more diverse and unique exotic weapons. For example, even if you don't have many exotics yourself, you see them out in the open world all the time. You probably just don't always realize it, because most of them look and sound just like standard weapons. If more exotics had really distinct visual properties and firing mechanics, it would help set them apart. And when you do find one or complete a bounty, it would feel much more rewarding if it did something that none of your other guns do (even if the difference is purely superficial).

Probably, but eventually you'll find out that of all the choice Destiny seems to offer, there really are a small subset of weapons that will get you by any situation. There are a few that you may use for ultra specific scenarios.

If you have:

Vision of Confluence
Fatebringer
Gjallarhorn
Truth
LDR 5001
Icebreaker
Corrective Measure
Vex Mythoclast
Atheon's Epilouge
Any void fusion rifle
Hunger of Crota

You can do all of Destiny's current activities without much trouble. For nightfall with burn elements, you may have to use something new of the right element. You can add in a few that suit your playstyle, or legendary alternatives depending on the Exotic you equip, but that's my list. I could go in with nothing but those on my character and do just fine in any PvE scenario.

So I get where he is coming from, when pretty much everything I get now I shard immediately.

I have none of these.
Then again, I spend (spent, xbl ran out) most of my time in crucible. I'd do the tiger strikes but, I rarely did weeklies or dalies.
I attempted nightfall once and I just gave up in the end.

I have super good advice, hard light, thorn and mida multi tool and these seem to get me through fine along with final boss.
I still secretly want suros regime though

Heh. I seem to remember you posting something that said the same sort of thing, except with respect to the grind. ("Eventually, you'll get to the point where you're grinding.") Never happened. ;)

Fatebringer
Gjallarhorn
Truth
LDR 5001
Icebreaker
Corrective Measure

I have two of those - LDR 5001, and Atheon's Epilogue. I don't use either one very much. (I use a legendary hand cannon right now - Chance? - that dropped during a nightfall; it doesn't have the best perks, but it works fine for me. My special varies between fusion rifles (Murmur, Pocket Infinity, Plan C - no voids, unfortunately) and snipers (Praedyth's Revenge or Y-09 Longbow Synthesis) for PvE, snipers or Invective for PvP. Heavy used to be primarily Unfriendly Giant, but I've been leveling up a new One Way Ticket 000, and though I don't like the fact that it needs to reload after each rocket, I love the tracking. I have a couple of machine guns, but I don't really like them.

Bottom line - my weapons are at least a tier below yours... but I still have a lot of fun. ;) Plus, I get new stuff that's worth trying out - because I DON'T have the be-all, end-all guns in every slot.

Oh totally, but I think the problem is that there really ARE be all end all weapons. Gjallarhorn and Truth cover pretty much everything in terms of rocket launchers. The only reason you'd use another one is if you are equipping another exotic. When using Mythoclast in the raid, I equip Hunger of Crota for example. Some weapons are just so good that they dominate in a bunch of situations. I was sort of hoping for Destiny to be like Two Betrayals, where you never really had the optimal gun combo for any given encounter.

You are really limited by the nature of the activities, and Destiny quite frankly doesn't have that many that are demanding.

One Way Ticket gets better, especially with three-in-the-tube and Clown Cartridge. Looking forward to getting that fully levelled and running around with my Ruin Wings on. As it stands now, I already feel like I end up launching rockets all day with that combo.
