New game mode idea: Harvest (Destiny)

by Revenant1988 ⌂ @, How do I forum?, Wednesday, December 31, 2014, 13:29 (3857 days ago)

So I'm playing crucible right now, chasing marks to get a gun I need from a vendor.

I start thinking about the grind.

I look at my materials, and I have 400+ spin metal, less than 100 Helium. Pretty normal for me.

Then I had an idea as I was playing on one of the new maps (mothyard MP one).

What if there were a way to collect or compete over upgrade materials in crucible?

*It could work similar to how Head Hunter worked in Halo Reach.*

Harvest FFA: When you roam around a map, you collect materials just like in patrol mode. (The material is based on the map you are playing on, so if you wind up on the moon, it's helium, Mars would be iron, mercury...ascendant farts or something.

As you collect materials, a number pops on your head for all to see. If you are killed while holding materials, you drop them, and your opponent has a chance to pick them up by pressing the normal action button for a second or two. If they aren't picked up quickly, they disappear and you have to search for more.

Collect your materials and bring them to a zone to score points. Manage to collect 10 or 15 mats to a zone, you win the game. If you collect 10 in one go you win instantly, just like head hunter.

At the post game screen, first place get 10-15 of that material, 2nd place gets 5-7, third place gets 1-3.

*This is in addition to regular engrams and other rewards*

Team Harvest: The same as above, except the cap is raised to win a game. When a team wins a game, each player on that team gets a flat 10 materials. The losing team gets 5 or less, so even if you lose you get something for your trouble.

I think a dedicated game that revolves around this concept would add much needed variety to crucible, and would allow another way to get upgrade materials for those who don't want to patrol.

I would also be great for players who want to cheese bounties, since you don't score points with kills ;) Need to get 500 void kills in MP? Grab a friend or two and do Harvest FFA, find a corner, and get to work!

Bungie could even put a cap on how many materials you could earn via crucible play (by day or week or whatever they feel like)

What say ye? What would you tweak? What would you add or take away?

Brilliant idea

I think this is a fantastic idea. It would add a nice incentive to play crucible. Plus it would solve the new problem I've run in to: since Bungie added the ability to buy materials with marks, that's all I buy. I can never afford to buy armor or weapons from the vendors because all my marks go towards materials. Having a new way to earn marks and materials at the same time would be a big help.

so if you wind up on the moon, it's helium, Mars would be iron, mercury...ascendant farts or something.

This made me laugh so hard that my wife came in from the other room and asked "what the hell is wrong with you?!"

Harvest FFA: When you roam around a map, you collect materials just like in patrol mode.

If you don't need to kill other players to get your 'points' in the first place, then it'd likely suffer the same non-confrontation problem as Stockpile did. i.e. most of the players, most of the time, are running back and forth between collection and drop off zones. It's more a collection race than it is a fight.

One way to improve this, like Stockpile, would be to make it one-sided. i.e Alpha Team tries to collect resources, while Bravo tries to stop them. But whether collection gametpyes (like CTF too) work well in Destiny isn't certain to me. It could easily suffer the opposite problems of it either being impossible for one team to make progress, or being far too easy.

So then what? Time gates, contingent on a certain number of collected materials, to keep the game moving? Rapidly get's complicated, and becomes difficult to contextualise in Destiny's overall Crucible mode.

Hmmm...
