Looks like some of Bungie's future plans have potentially leaked. If this is accurate, we'll be getting Expansion 2: The House of Wolves, as well as Expansions 3 & 4, then a larger "Comet" expansion.

It looks like Expansions 2, 3, and 4 will be similar in scope to The Dark Below (3 story missions each, a strike, a raid, a handful of PvP maps.) The Comet expansion looks to be much larger: 12 story missions, 4 strikes, a raid, and... A new location.

This thread on Reddit is where I first saw it this morning. If you scroll down on that thread, some people have listed out what each expansion is supposedly going to come with, most notable "Comet": 12 story missions, 4 strikes, 1 Public Event, 1 patrol, 1 Raid, and 6 PvP maps.

The $$$ question

So the big question... How will the pricing work out on all of this? I suspect Expansions 3 & 4 will follow a similar model as 1 & 2: $20 each, or $35 for the season pass.

What about the Comet expansion?

On the one hand, it sounds like a sizable amount of content. On the other hand, its more or less what I was hoping to get for $20 in the Dark Below. If we're paying $20 each for these arguably minor (overpriced?) expansions, how much will comet cost? How much would you all be willing to pay?

I'd expect around $60, with an option to get a season pass along with it.

I'd guess Destiny is aiming to have around a $10/month subscription fee, implemented as an "optional" DLC model.

All in the math

As the price goes up, the number of sales go down.
As the prices goes down, the number of sales go up.

Since Bungie has near zero cost involved in an individual sale, they can skew the price to pull is as much money as is possible.

The one thing we have on our side is that, all money equations being equal, Bungie would rather have more players playing, because it increases the experience and leads to potential future sales. So in the extreme case, Bungie might be able to find someone willing to pay one billion dollars for a copy, thus the most profit would be from charging that amount, even if only one person buys it. That however does not lead to future sales, or a universe in which you bump into other players. So if the person with a billion to spare isn't happy, they won't pay that price again and expansion two would be a profit flop.

Keeping things healthy is a metric that only Bungie can determine and only they know, and the value they place on that is up to them.

Bungie will determine from the sales numbers on the first two expansions how to price the rest. What I'm really hoping is that the initial sales and first two expansions cover all of Bungie's development cost, and maybe more. I somehow doubt that the initial sales numbers covered all of Bungie's development cost, and all of Activision's advertisement. I want Bungie to be flowing in so much cash they don't have to worry about profit margins on expansions.

Could be. I'm hoping it's closer to the $30-$40 range, but Activision has been known to be somewhat ballsy with their pricing. "Yeah it's $60. Go ahead and complain, we KNOW you'll pay it".

A thing is only worth what someone will pay. On the flip side, If someone is willing to pay it, it's worth is that much. I suppose it doesn't surprise me that the "worth" of a modern video game is more than a video game 20 years ago. It certainly takes more to produce them, and people in general are willing to pay more for them now that they are prime entertainment for professional (read: monied) adults.

I find it absurd that different sources want to charge me at least $100 to watch my favorite basketball team. But, I understand there are many people with either a greater passion for basketball or more disposable income.

I remember buying NES/SNES era games for over 80. We just happened to have a valley when we moved to disk media.

I enjoyed the chain-of-events style The Dark Below has. If they keep improving from there, an add in new/additional ways to experience the game world and loot systems, it's encouraging that it is not a case of long content droughts. I think the main game hurt most on story because nothing said that un-wreathed Director Nodes were side missions. Made the narrative confusing.

Agreed. It's likely that the DLC drops will be similar to Dark Below, but the Comet thing should seriously pack a punch. If they go the $40+ route for that thing, it should be loaded down with story and purpose.

I'm thinking comet will be the soonest they can actually get their act together with the storytelling.
