Well, this part of the story Bungie did correctly (Destiny)

I've had a thought bubbling up for a few months now that I want to share. Bungie actually did at least one part of the story correctly in my oh so humble opinion. But first, a reminder as to the way most TV and video game stories are done.

Part one: Save the world, or everyone dies!
Part two: Uh, save the world again, or everyone dies twice!!!!!
Part three: Your world and every alternate universe where you have a loved one dies!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basically, they come out with this huge hero if you do, die if you don't scenario that becomes unrealistic to top if you want to go at the Universe again. Now, Bungie almost avoids this with Halo but still falls prey. There is the invading alien force (save the world) but the game centers around the ring, such that when it's over you still haven't saved the world. Now, they fail because the Ring was really more of a (spoiler) save the universe. Thus we still get these narratives that try and one-up saving the universe.

In Destiny, we are told the Darkness is coming, minions come before the Darkness, and we're in "hold out" mode, just starting to stretch our legs into something that might be considered an offensive. There is plenty of room for each expansion to grow the threat while still having us "hold it off". For example, Crota may not be able to kill the Traveler per say, but we don't want the Hive camped out under the traveler waiting for the Darkness to arrive, right?

The narrative is more like: There is a war that is growing ever more intense, and humanity is on the front lines just trying to survive the goliaths as they wage war, pitching in where we can.

No expansion really has to go over the top, yet we are still fighting and winning important battles. Good job on that part, Bungie :)

Near the end, you said we're fighting and winning important battles, that brought to mind something that bothers me about Destiny. It would be nice if at least some things we did in the game had any visible effects.

Kill the head Vex leader? Nah, there's still just as much Vex as before. Kill Crota? He wasn't all that important, I guess.

It just feels like you don't actually achieve anything when you take down supposed beings of power and importance in whichever species' infrastructure. *sigh*

It's not just that. None of the threats are actually visible. We're told there's danger, but all the danger is 'off screen'.

How can the dimension be pocked?

Are there craters in the constituent space-time continuum?

And is there going to be a future heavy weapon that can inflict that sort of damage?
