Kinect: missed opportunity. (Destiny)
This is fairly tangential to Destiny but it has some relevance. I was going to include this in another post but it should probably be in its own post.
It's a pity MS knobbled Kinect by not giving it onboard ram and having it need to steal GPU ram. If they hadn't done that then you could have asked your Ghost to do things for you. XBone users could have said:
- "Ghost: shard all those greens." and your inventory could have been cleaned in one command.
- Ghost: invite fire-team or invite player to [fire-team | raid | crucible | nightfall | weekly]
- Ghost: go to Tower
- Ghost: send voice msg (you get to send a 20 second "tweet", for example, "Crota's End: Normal Mode?" press (X) to end recording, (O) to cancel)
But that wont happen until MS releases a version of Kinect with built in GPU ram.
It would have been great for xboners but... oh well... :-(
I know they had costs to worry about and Cortana wasn't far enough along but it's such a pity.
Cortana has to fit on smart phones and not hog resources. I imagine a Kinect with its own onboard GPU ram and some 'normal' ram to run something like Cortana and maybe a ram disk that developers could write config to.
At the simplest level: the config could associate a number with a phrase and, if Cortana hears it then the number is sent back to the game as an event (as if there was a dedicated button on the controller that the player had just pressed).

Kinect: missed opportunity.
I still think it would be interesting to have the option to melee using the Kinect instead of pressing a button. Just don't let go of the controller while you do it.
shout: "Punch!!"?

Comparing Xbone to Smart Phones isn't Fair
Smart Phones cost way more than the Xbone.

Actual Punch
As in thrust the controller forward quickly towards the screen. The 360 couldn't do it, but supposedly the Xbone can.
DOH! stupid me. I hadn't even thought of that.

CEA had something like that...
You could shout 'GRENADE' and it would throw a grenade.
It was a cheap gimmick that quickly led to abuse by anybody sitting in the room with you.

Kinect: missed opportunity.
What you say:
"Ghost: shard all those greens." and your inventory could have been cleaned in one command.
What it will do:
Ghost deletes all items in a slot OR deletes yellows OR deletes Ultra-Rare exotic gun called "All Those Greens". [Description: It'll help you grow big and strong!]
(by the way, it's technically dismantling. Sharding only refers to purps and golds.)
What you say:
"Ghost: invite fire-team or invite player to [fire-team | raid | crucible | nightfall | weekly]"
What it will do:
(in Siri voice) 'I'm sorry, but I do not understand that prompt.' OR 'Inviting name-that-wasn't-even-remotely-close-to 'Fistmybumole'.
What you say:
"Ghost: send voice msg (you get to send a 20 second "tweet", for example, "Crota's End: Normal Mode?" press (X) to end recording, (O) to cancel)"
What it will do:
See "Invite gamertag" above.
What you say to friends:
"Man, I'm so glad I'm almost at the end of this Triple-Burn Nightfall Strike! The boss is almost dead! Hey, as soon as I get this reward claim for five Gal-O-Horns, I'm gonna immediately go to the tower!"
What Kinect hears:
Ghost: go to Tower
What it will do:
Yank your ass right out of the strike. You were fireteam leader, so your friends are pulled too.
What you will do:
Throw your Kinect out the window and make a post contradicting this one.
You're not gonna like it either way, trust me. Just let it go.
