The initial plan had been to make a bubble village, to bump some amyl nitrate, to let the night take us where it might. It was preposterous, in retrospect. Like herding cats, or siphoning diesel fuel. Titans don't answer to the man. The addition of hunters, in an attempt to fill the gap by masquerading with those psychopaths, was a necessary evil. There just aren’t enough Titans out there.

That initial encounter will live in legend. I felt dirty; it was like wearing OJ’s gloves. My initial apprehensions were immediately confirmed. The victory was abject and venomous. Legend as well, because it didn’t record in any form on Bungie.net, as if the server rejected the information. It occurred; it was total; it is a memory for those present alone.

Thereafter things became less one-sided. Loses accrued, and were compounded. It became clear that that initial horrific beating, delivered like angry bikers at a roadhouse, was a false flag. The shit just wasn’t as easy as that grainy smut on youtube made it out to be. Games were murky, tense; close loses and close wins. Plans fell to the wayside, abandoned like an unwanted dog at the pound; narrow escapes, angry comebacks, failed enterprises.

Perhaps it's best left to the professionals. It was clear we weren’t the angry world-beaters we assumed we’d be. The sum total of the night was six wins, three loses; every team that felled us, then subsequently defeated; in those nines games, opponents were outscored by an average of 19,000 points to 16k. Just 9 way of the gun medals, and 11 blast shields. Hunters led the way in 8 out of the 9.

But the bubble-infused, orb-junkie gunslingers could be brought down; the bubbles, and bad intentions, smashed. Perhaps it’s for the best. The randoms won’t be trolling up the crucible with it any time soon; and neither, it appears, will the organized brigades.
