I AM A VOID SHOTGUN MONSTER (Destiny)

by Ouranje ⌂, Dallas, TX, Sunday, March 08, 2015, 04:38 (3796 days ago)

On March 3rd, Bungie rolled out a new Crucible gametype: Inferno. I played Inferno for the first time last night, hoping that with a complete lack of radars, my void shotgun would serve me well at last.

It has been twenty four hours. As of this EXACT MOMENT, I finally, FINALLY beat the PVP portion of the Thorn bounty. I went from 109 points to the full 500, and I feel like a MONSTER, because I am a HUNTER.

A HUNTER. I have no Void assets built into my class, and all I could do was whine. On this forum! Because all I had was a void shotty, and I could never get close enough to make it count. So, I complained, and got told that void fusion rifles were where it's at. Turns out, that doesn't work for me in PVP; even if I got a charge off, I'd maybe inch into my adversary's health bar, maybe half the time. Let's not even talk about void sniper rifles (even with explosive rounds, I just... no, how).

But then Inferno came, and the radars disappeared. And as a hunter... so did I. I vanished into every dark corner in every map I could manage to do so-- Blind Watch especially-- and I got almost FOUR HUNDRED POINTS IN ONE DAY. Shotguns to the FACE. ALL DAY. I was vengeful for all the times the weapon had failed me, and even more so the amount of times the very weapon I was questing after was the one that brought me down.

Of course, now, I still have the very last part of this bounty to go-- Xyor, the Unwed, must be slain-- but I'm not worried. I'll get that done in a night with my fine friends here at DBO. I'm just glad... so, SO glad... that all that Crucible nonsense is behind me.

And I did it. As. A hunter. I AM TOTALLY EARNING THIS GUN.

(also I had a Universal Remote drop in my second to last match and I laughed because I just bought that last week, oh well)

I think I can help you be even more of a monster

Congrats. I run shotgun as my special all the time in Crucible and noticed something you said and thought I'd add something that might make you more of a monster.

You mentioned specifically that you can't get close enough in Crucible for shotgun kills. This indicates to me that you're trying to attack with a shotgun offensively in the open, most likely in scenarios where the enemy lands shots on your first. Am I right?

Unless you're amazing at being invisible or you're a blink-and-shotty-them-in-the-head type player, trying to get shotgun kills by chasing down enemies is going to be a losing battle. I have no problem getting shotgun kills with the radar on for 2 reasons:

1) Let them come to you.

You can ask some of the people on here I've played with, Up North, Robot Chickens, but I get a lot of my shotgun kills by simply letting them come to me. The radar acts like a magnet, you see that red bar or red section and you start running for it (which is idiotic if you haven't first considered where that enemy is, what they might be running with, what's their strategy, etc). Putting yourself in a spot where they will have little time to react and having your gun aimed where they will enter the room at will pretty much guarantee kills. Small maps are great for this.

2) When you do run, know what gun you need in what spaces.

If I need to move position and I'm running, I select which gun I'm wielding based on the encounter I might run into. If it's in open space with distance between me and an enemy, I have my primary out. If I'm running through tight hallways where I'll more likely run into at point blank range, I'll have my shotty at the ready. Making this decision while on the move will definitely increase your K/D. While staying near cover is smart, sometimes you gotta move.

Hope this helps in your monsterhood. Good luck with the rest of the bounty.

Radar is your friend

Like beard was saying watch your radar but know what lies in that direction. Watch choke points, doorways anyplace that grants you the first shot on the enemy. Also when they stay bunched up know where the flank points are and how to pop in whack a few and bugger out. Avoid being out in te open, or if you find you have to run across some long sight lines switch to a primary that will help with those. I found maps like burning shrine and anomaly are very conducive to shotty work as they have Tighter play spaces.

I think I can help you be even more of a monster

Monsterhood! I love it. All very good points, I thank you. Some of that really would've come in handy, but it'll be especially useful in my attempt to do the invective bounty in the near future. :)

With apologies to The Sphinx. I feel your pain though. Getting Thorn on my hunter with only a void shotgun and MG was very difficult, especially because at the time I didn't have any groups to do PVP with. I did it later on with a warlock and all void weapons and it was almost trivial.

Thanks! I forgot, I did have a void MG, but I would estimate that only 25 of my points came from it, especially since I got killed about three seconds after getting any heavy ammo ever. Plus, I never played PVP with anyone I knew-- well, except once with Cyber-KN, but I sucked so bad he had to exit stage left, haha.

This sounds so satisfying. Bravo.

Some thoughts on Inferno.

Having now played some Inferno, and watched a few high level casters vid it up, some thoughts immediately come to mind:

1. Hunters got boned on their supers. I say this mostly because Hunter supers require clumped enemies and a good deal of planning to execute. You need space for them; if you blast out a gold gun with an enemy across the room, they can focus you down with an Auto Rifle before you can get a shot off (and once you do get it activated, good luck finding anyone to kill). Getting a good super off without radar will be tough, and a voidwalker or titan will have an even easier time shutting you down. Sorry Hunter Bros.

2. High look sensitivity users must be thrilled. Inferno turned crucible into a Tron-esque version of CS:GO where nobody checks corners and only one class has flashbangs. Being able to rotate quickly and acquire targets faster than your adversary just became a premium.

3. Maxing discipline and agility are probably the way to go. Grenades are the new supers; having them as often as possible is a huge plus. Kill distance also goes way down because you can actually sneak up on people. Having a longer jump and more mobility is a premium too. Wouldn't hurt to have high strength too; you're going to be in melee range way more often.

4. The orange is right about shotguns. Because kill distance is going down and sniping is far less useful (don't scope for long, y'all), having high RoF weapons in close range is also big. Invective loving Strikers, welcome to Valhalla. Plan C and other quick charge FR's will be super handy too. Same goes for Last Word.

5. Not having a radar changes everything. Good googly-moogly nobody checks their six. Everyone runs around like headless chickens from control point to control point. I advise not capping the one you're nearest to and hiding behind the geometry with an auto-shotty. Moving slowly and keeping a wall to your back will probably do you well; sprint only when you can close distance without chasing.

Some thoughts on Inferno.

All reasons I don't think I'll ever try it. After getting used to Destiny I'm amazed at how much of Halo's strategy it managed to keep. I don't want to play Call of Warfare: Counter-Duty III...
