Why auto-renew when you can get it for <$40? (Destiny)

I do use those pre-paid codes but had left the auto-renewal on for times when I forgot to load one up (like now).

I had my first pick of gamer tag when I joined and thought that an interruption of gold membership might put it back on the auction block.

That didn't happen this time, so maybe it's not a valid concern.
