An acceptable way to advance exotics in House of Wolves (Destiny)

I am not naive enough to think that Bungie would simply automatically upgrade all existing exotics to 362 versions when House of Wolves is out. The following is an acceptable alternative:

The gunsmith should be able to upgrade your exotics. Any time. Any exotic.

When you upgrade your exotic, it is replaced with the new version, and you have all of the nodes you have upgraded activated except the last 3. Your attack remains the same as it was, but now you have the last three nodes to boost it to 362.

Examples:

1. I turn in a fully upgraded Gjallarhorn. I get back a Gjallarhorn with 331 attack that has the last three upgrade nodes empty. Upgrading those three nodes takes it to 362.

2. I turn in a half upgraded Red Death. I get back a new version of that weapon, with all of my upgrade nodes exactly as they were before. Upgrading it all the way takes it to 362.

3. I turn in a fully upgraded piece of exotic armor. I get back the same piece, and it has 36 light with the last 3 defense upgrade nodes not researched. Filling those in takes it to 42 light (or whatever the new max is)

4. I turn in a half upgraded piece of exotic armor. All nodes are exactly as I had them, but fully upgrading it takes it to 42 light, or whatever the new max is.

The bottom line, is that we should be able to upgrade any exotic at any time. No waiting for Xur. No hoping Xur is upgrading the weapon you want. No negating any of our progress already.

If the system is any more restrictive than this, there will be a problem.

do this for raid gear too

Well, they may come up with a different solution altogether. I'll keep an open mind.

I like this idea.

I have a 30-Light armamentarium chest piece that I've wanted to upgrade for months, but haven't ever seen Xur upgrading that particular piece.

For armor, I really like the idea of keeping aesthetics seperate from function. I want people at max level to be able to wear any Legendary or Exotic armor they want and still be competitive.

Your system would help accomplish this. Say you really wanted to wear the Kabr's set, you could just spend the glimmer/shards/whatever to upgrade it to max level.

The system could still prevent overt abuse by simply being expensive: require lots of resources. That way players would have some connection to the armor/weapons they choose to upgrade instead of everyone upgrading everything.

So now I have to glimmer farm if I want to upgrade something? No thanks.

Limit it to exotics only, and make the fee reasonable.

There has to be some cost of admission to having the "best" gear, or everyone will upgrade all the stuff they have to be the new "best".

I would rather it be glimmer than some new currency.

My main desire is keeping appearance apart from functionality.

So what? Why is that a problem?

If it somehow were a problem, Bungie could simply design the missions, strike, and raid to be of such new novel challenges, that the old weapons will not be the most effective.

Like in Crota, suddenly 'regenerates health on picking up and orb" went from a sucky perk, to a really good one.

I mispoke. I didn't mean to say that there must be a cost, more that I can't imagine there not being some cost at this point.

+1 to all of this :)

As someone who is in the process of upgrading a vault filled with exotics (literally FULL), this is very important to me. I'm taking Bungie at their word that they won't repeat the same mistakes with regards to taking our exotics forward with HoW. Otherwise, I just might burst into tears thinking about all the glimmer I've wasted :)

You make it sound like Xur shouldn't be a timegate to keep you playing, just like the rest of the RNG.

Good luck with that. :D

It shouldn't. Time gates suck. Bungie needs to let go of this notion that they have to make players play for a long time. If they DO, then they should offer a lot of content and challenges to undertake. Real ones. Not MMO bullshit.

I agree with you that your proposed changes would be more fun.

I expect that many at bungie would agree.

I guess I'm saying that the way the game works, the way it gets and keeps people hooked and playing, is very intentional. I think they definitely do want to keep it fun, but also keep the game populated. Because, let's be honest, if you weren't playing with a friendly group, it's very likely that you would play much less past the first couple of months. So keeping people engaged is a big part of helping people to "have fun". Because that's the funnest part right -- the experiences you have in-game with friends.

But keeping people in-game often enough to have those experiences is a difficult task. So they give enough reason to keep people playing, even if those systems are less fun than other systems would be.

I expect that as things go it will definitely get better, more enjoyable.

I also expect that the RNG and time gates will not go away. That's part of the design.

You could semi-time-gate it by requiring materials that only Xûr sells, like the Exotic Shard. Sure, people could just stockpile, but that's true of any currency. At least this way, you always have access to the upgrade path if you have the required elements.

I like the basic upgrade mechanism, and it wouldn't surprise me if they end up doing exactly that. It seems like the most straightforward way to not have players go backwards when upgrading, but still have something to work toward.

As for being able to upgrade any exotic at any time... in a perfect world I'd love it, but I'm betting it'll be random items from Xur like it is now. I'm not saying I want that, but it's probably what will happen.
