Idea: Progressive Strike Skulls (Destiny)

by Kahzgul, Tuesday, March 24, 2015, 04:11 (3780 days ago)

I think it would be neat if there was a Strike playlist that added a semi-random skull to each progressive map, and also increased the rewards for each progressive map completed.

The first strike would always be Heroic. The second would always add a random burn to the available mods, because we all agree that burns are great and we don't want people bailing because they didn't get a burn second. After that, new burns would show up on strikes 4 and 7. Nightfall would always be added to strike 9. All other skulls would appear in random order, as illustrated below.

Any skull you had for a previous strike would also apply to all subsequent strikes.

So here's an example:

Strike 1: Heroic You get a rare engram as a reward for completion.
Strike 2: Arc burn and Heroic. Two rare engrams.
Strike 3: Arc burn, heroic, juggler. Three rare engrams.
Strike 4: Arc burn, Void burn, heroic, juggler, one legendary engram.
Strike 5: Arc burn, Void burn, heroic, juggler, lightswitch. one legendary engram, one rare engram.
Strike 6: Arc burn, void burn, heroic, juggler, lightswitch, angry. one legendary engram, two rare engrams.
Strike 7: Arc burn, Void burn, Solar burn, heroic, juggler, lightswitch, angry. One legendary engram, three rare engrams.
Strike 8: Arc burn, Void burn, Solar burn, heroic, juggler, lightswitch, angry, epic. Two legendary engrams.
Strike 9: Arc burn, void burn, solar burn, heroic juggler, lightswitch, angry, epic, nightfall (this is all known skull mods currently in the game). One exotic engram.

At this point I think it's best to give players the victory and send them back to orbit with the following total loot haul:
1 exotic engram
6 legendary engrams
12 rare engrams

Players would be able to earn loot from the final tier of the progressive strike playlist once per week, but would get all other rewards every time they ran the playlist. All playlist runs start at strike 1 (so if you wipe on the Nightfall strike 9, you've gotta do them all over again starting from 1), though you could join someone in the middle of their run just as you can in the current game.

This playlist would not supplant any current playlist.

What do you think? I think it would add some freshness and greater replayability to our currently tired strikes.

It's a neat idea but I'm not sure I like needing to play nine Strikes back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back... Of course, if you make it shorter then everyone is rolling in exotic engrams... Perhaps make it shorter by half and stick to legendary engrams and let Destiny's loot system deliver the exotic ones via the normal legendary to exotic chance that's already built in?

It's funny, spending several hours on a raid is one thing. But playing so many strikes one after the other somehow feels entirely different.

Huh. I like the Roc Strike playlist as long as I don't get Valus Ta'Ruc 4 times in a row. Seriously, why is it possible to get the same strike even twice in a row??

Because it really is a random selection each time. There was an update recently that said if you stayed in a full fireteam it would be less likely to get the same one twice in a row.

But it would probably draw too much attention away from Weekly Heroic and Nightfall strikes. Especially with such a high level of guaranteed reward.

Why would that be a downside?

Do the weekly, do the nightfall, do the playlists for marks, and do this challenge series each week? Repeat, repeat, repeat.

I'd love to see major story missions put back to back with skulls. So you'd take on all the major story missions on one planet, stick them back to back in a playlist & add in skulls with rewards at the end, possibly with the Nightfall skull on.

Earth: A Guardian Rises, Restoration, The Dark Within
Moon: The Dark Beyond, The Worlds Grave, Chamber of Night
Venus: A Strangers Call, Ishtar Collective, Eye of a Gate Lord
Mars: Exclusion Zone, The Garden's Spire, A Rising Tide(?), The Black Garden

You could even put together a playlist of the sub-plots.

Warmind: The Warmind, The Last Array, The Buried City (?) (I'm not sure which missions involve the warmind beyond earth)
Sword of Crota: Sword of Crota, Chamber of Night(?), Shrine of Oryx

I would totally play through the story missions again for fun, but... no rewards & I need to level stuff. The progression system is getting in my way (cue cody).

You were just hunting down Fallen in that particular event, but the high level retread of some of those story missions was honestly pretty fun; I don't know why everybody was so down on that event. At least it was different. The idea of higher level retreads of story missions for XP and legendary items is welcome to me.

I imagine we'll probably see QW again right before HoW, similar to how we started seeing the Blades on Earth and the Moon.

Because we would rather have had things like The Dark below missions: same geometry, just new enemy placement.

I still don't get why someone at Bungie can't take a planet, get an object editor and add a bunch of guys in different spots, script the encounters, and call it a mini mission. If it's so hard to do THAT, then their tools must not be very good. I distinctly recall them gushing about the tools enabling rapid content creation, yet that clearly has not come to pass.

Those "find the hand /eye of crota" mini missions were great. They tell you what area to search, NO WAYPOINTS OR HINTS, then when you find them and kill them, a huge battle spawns.

This was not one of your options. Your options were: nothing different, or the queen's wrath mission. I'd at least take the queen's wrath mission, instead of nothing.

On that, I think we all agree.

QW was just weird.

You're given a token that allows you to start a one of a pool of story missions with pre-set burns- Problem is, the mission is randomly selected when you launch, and would range from absurdly easy (Restoration) to absurdly difficult (Eye of the gate lord/Black Garden with Solar burn), so you could just orbit and try again for a new mission if you wanted.

I think people's main beef was the reward system- Apparently, ascendant shards are supposed to be hard to get (LOL), so Bungie quickly posted a hotfix that prevented you from gaining those when breaking down the reward gear. So if you already had legendary armour in those slots, you were effectively getting NOTHING for doing these missions regularly. You could get lucky and snag a Sniper rifle or ship, but the odds for those to drop were way really low. I did ~60 of those missions, and I only got two of the sniper rifles.

As I write this post, it's become apparent that Destiny, specifically, is just too loot-driven for a lot of people- myself included- for casual challenges like this to seem appealing. Once we start using that loot as motivation, We NEED some carrot on the end of that stick, or we just won't bother. For me personally, the only exception to this is running the Vault of Glass.

Bungie could do wonders to eliminate this by only awarding engrams (and moving ascendant materials back down to blue status as they were on launch, so they can't come from legendary engrams anymore). Then, allow the cryptarch to change an engram to the type you want.

For instance, unless you are just starting out, legendary armor engrams always suck. You're not going to wear it, since you already have either raid or vendor gear. It can't be better. So al they are good for are materials and shards. But, if you can go to the cryptarch and re-roll it as say, a primary weapon engram, then now they are useful.

Awarding an engram for events like that now has a much smaller chance of being something you'd never use or want.

What if you could control what Rahool gives you, to an extent?

Give him four random Blues and a Crucible Commendation, get a Legendary Weapon.
Give him four random Blues and a Vanguard Commendation, get a Legendary Armor (chance at 36 Light).

Four Purples and a Crucible commendation, Get an Exotic weapon.
Four Purples and a Vanguard commendation, Exotic armor.

Two purples, a Vanguard Commendation, and a piece of Crota raid armor (any class): random armor piece with 36 Light for your equipped class (random perks).

Combine the randomness of Engrams with giving players more control, top-tier gear, and customization. Everybody wins!
