Open world PVP (Destiny)

by TheeChaos @, Thursday, April 16, 2015, 09:39 (3508 days ago)

Would be nice to see in this game in some fashion. It would take ALOT from bungie to make this happen. But it would at some thrill to the game. I would prefer it to be optional, but it would be nice to have different factions/races then when you are doing patrols be able to kill other players. Its early and I have not had my coffee yet but I was just thinking about this on the way to work. Right now it really doesnt fit with Guardians killing guardians outside of the crucible. It would have a sense of belonging to it. Right now everyone is fighting for the same faction. I prefer to think, "some men just want to watch the world burn".

Maybe thats just me.

I think they would have to restrict where this happens. Some players, especially those who are not as good, would find their fun ruined by PvP in the open world.

Well have it where you there are open world pvp instances and then ones that dont allow it. This would easily be prevented. Only bad thing is in the PVP one is you would have to roll with some other players

Not part of the "no griefing" philosophy

by Durandal, Thursday, April 16, 2015, 12:10 (3508 days ago) @ TheeChaos

Bungie put lots of thought into addressing the common forms of griefing in MMOs. Private loot, no "barrens chat", private ammo, very forgiving quests where you just need to be near when a mob is killed for the most part, all are anti griefing measures.

Open world PVP, where you could be enjoying yourself until a gallerhorn, truth, or a few sniper rounds start coming your way, is contrary to that design goal.

Now, a PVP mode with AI enemies running around too would be very interesting...

This is the one thing that I have always wanted in a Bungie game. When they mentioned that everything was sheared I was hopeful that there would be something like this.

All I have ever* wanted was a PvP H v H v AI game.

*Almost not hyperbole

Two game modes

by Kahzgul, Thursday, April 16, 2015, 14:38 (3508 days ago) @ INSANEdrive

Stalker Mode:

It's a PvP playlist that spawns each player in a different sector of a world. These players have only one life, and their goal is to find and kill the other players. AI enemies spawn and behave as normal. Players can access their ghost and, after a brief time (5 seconds) get an indicator as to which direction the enemy players are in.

AND

Assassin mode:

You get assigned a guardian at random. You are more likely to be matched with this guardian. You may shoot the guardian who you have, and that guardian may shoot you (though he doesn't know it's you). In the tower, you can both melee. If you kill the guardian who is after you, you then acquire their target. If they kill you, the person who was tracking them is now tracking you. This mode would have a season and last for 1 month at a time or until a winner was found. It would persist through all other activities.

I'm sorry to say, but open World PvP is one of those fanboy wishlist ideas that has never - to my knowledge - been implemented in a fun way. It's always hate, griefing and vileness. Brings out the worst in people.

I've always thought this would be a good idea, but I do understand they want a more friendly universe to play in. I think the easiest thing would be that when you highlight patrols, it would simply give you the option for PvP mode or not.

I know it doesn't fit into the idea that all guardians are fighting together, so it could go into more detail from there. Maybe have the faction item you are wearing put you on a team where you can only fight other opposing factions. Even go so far as to have to issue a challenge to another player for them to accept before fighting.

What about if it were just when a public event hit? See which faction is best at defending their specific conflux, maybe a Warsat drops & it's a race to see who can get the most time on it, or see who can get the most kills on an extraction event. I can conceive of some events where there would be no player on player damage, the events would all have to be tweaked and the difficulty increased tho'.

What if the factions werent trying to play against the AI but actually play against each other. Lets saw you are playing fallen for example and you are the people defending the drills or escorting someone to a location. While the other players are trying to kill you.

Just my thoughts.

It's definitely not what TheeChaos was going for with PvP, but I'd love to see something like this where completing public events, bounties, and patrol missions earn points that increase a faction's influence in the tower. At the end of the day, the faction with the most influence grants a small bonus (gear, glimmer, XP bonus, whatever) to the guardians who are representing them.

There would have to be some measures in place to keep a player from switching over to whichever faction is in the lead, though. They could keep the numbers secret until they're tallied at the end of the day, but I think it would be more fun to have it displayed in the tower somewhere so that you could see your faction falling behind and be motivated to go out and help them out. Maybe it could be based on which faction you currently have the highest reputation with. I'm sure that could be gamed as well, but if they could find a way to do it, it would be cool to have the factions actually playing a role in the game.

I always love ideas like this in theory, but in practice they seem to end up causing more frustration than anything else. Rockstar has dabbled with this in Red Dead and GTA Online, and I've never been a fan of their Open World PvP elements.

Still, I think there is potential to the idea. Someone just needs to pull it off.

I thought it worked in WoW, simply because you could choose a server that had open world PvP, or a server that didn't. Which didn't totally eliminate griefing, but certainly limited it.

Don't know if you could make that work on a console, though.

This was also an element of WoW, even on the PvP servers (with some hilariously glitchy exceptions; feel free to peruse Cracked.com for some examples, number #6 here is a good one).

The level disparity is probably the biggest point of grief; maybe if there were separate, level +30 patrol areas, where it could be implemented?

The problem with the WoW comparison, is that (and I don't know that much about WoW) in wow you can snipe someone from across a wide open area. I can just imagine some guy who just sits in a nice location and waits for people to enter his area.

This was an issue in Red Dead Revolver. People would tee up with a sniper outside common spawn areas and snipe players as they rode in and out of town. Sniper rifles didn't have any indicator to show you were being targeted, so it was easy to hide in the brush and fire away without retribution.

In WoW, you had to take a more personal approach but I used to run into cloaked rogues hiding in the more common areas all the time, and you were pretty much toast when they could pop all their cool downs to kill you. There was no Fist of Panic equivalent to save you.

In the open world, players would have ample opportunities to charge supers and get heavy ammo. It would not be some sort of even contest.

What if the ammo restrictions were Crucible-like? No popping ammo synths and so on. Supers would still be a problem I suppose. What are you supposed to realistically do when you see a Hunter fire up Golden Gun from a nice raised position? Maybe Supers could be limited somehow? Like perhaps they would not charge except for when you get Guardian kills? Or maybe you just need to make sure your fireteam has a Defender, Gunslinger, and Sunsinger so you have a chance to survive?

I think the Crucible works because everyone starts at the same time and more or less has equal access to Supers and Heavy ammo and map positioning. My two biggest annoyances with the Crucible are when a map like Blind Watch gives a team a clear positioning advantage and when I get killed over and over by Supers and heavy weapons because Destiny decided to join me into a game that has already been running for several minutes. And you seem to be advocating both of these!

Coming around a corner in Old Russia or Venus or wherever and having to stare down people in entrenched positions ready to obliterate me with heavy weapons and supers across the larger open world seems like it would be the worst of all possibilities. Big open areas, no cover, enemies camping all the best spots? Thanks but no thanks. I'd pass on that in a second. Part of being able to play with my toys is having a chance to play with them, and that won't happen if I get immediately sniped, rocketed, and Supered anywhere I go. And on the flip side, I don't particularly want to camp and nuke random people either.

On the contrary, I agree with you that facing down supers and heavy ammo with your For the people is the opposite of fun.

The fixes you proposed, limit supers and ammo in the open world, is the area we disagree. it would make the usual PVE even more boring and dull. That is why I don't think open world PVP in general is a good idea.

Ah! I assumed that any Open World PvP would be separate from general PvE patrol. Like you would select Patrol on the planet you wanted but would then select Faction Wars or some such thing from a difficulty pulldown kinda like you do for missions and strikes. :)

I think the biggest practical challenge to this would be that the open world maps aren't really designed with human opponents in mind. In the Crucible a ton of polish was applied to each map placing cover and carefully controlling lines of sight to make a mostly fair experience. On Patrol, assuming the maps didn't change, you often won't have much or any real cover. If it were Halo I'd immediately write this off as a horrible idea. I pretty much hated Reach's version of Blood Gulch because of how wide open you were to be shot from nearly anywhere. Destiny plays a bit differently though. With custom loadouts and Sparrows it just might maybe all work out. :)

The cloak in Reach was basically invisible at long range and there was, of course, no sniper scope to save you. And the thing that made it 100 times worse was how good of a Blood Gulch remake Valhalla was! All that cover made the map playable. Going back to the wide open sniping range for Reach was almost an insult.
