New Raid vs Prison of Elders [Poll] (Destiny)

by CruelLEGACEY @, Toronto, Sunday, April 19, 2015, 09:50 (3752 days ago)

More Console posted a poll asking if Destiny fans would rather see a new raid or the prison of elders in HoW. The results are somewhat eye opening. As I suspected, the niche appeal of the raids may very well be what motivated Bungie to ditch the HoW raid in favor of a top-level co-op mode that has a lower barrier to entry (less intimidating, perhaps more matchmaking-friendly). It seems that while most of us who play the raids feel they're the best thing in Destiny, the wider community is happy to be getting something else in HoW.

New Raid vs Prison of Elders [Poll]

I think it's a little early for this poll simply because we know so little about the Prison of Elders, it will be interesting to see opinions once gameplay has been shown and we understand what the gametype will entail. I was surprised however to see the results so skewed in favor of PoE, I assumed it would be more like 75/25% in favor of a Raid!

Not really a good argument

We would also know very little about the potential Raid. Any misgivings about the Prison of Elders are also valid over it.

Not quite… We at least understand the basic gameplay mechanics of what a "Raid" entails. 6 players working cooperatively to move through the environment, encountering progressively more difficult challenges along the way.

We have no idea what the Prison of Elders is.

I think is a completely legitimate poll of what people anticipate a Raid would be vs what people anticipate an Arena experience would be. It doesn't need to reflect the final product, but rather what the community expects/assumes/wants.

To me, Raids are fantastic, static experiences. An Arena in my mind would have more enemy variety and have periodic content updates. I can easily say an Arena will probably have a longer lifespan, so I'm totally okay with getting that now and having the Raid delayed a little.

There is a difference between a human hand designing the challenges you face, and a bunch of random enemies like in firefight. One is way better than the other, but might not be as 'fresh' for long.

If the Prison Of Elders is like the challenge mode from Vanquish for example, then you can sort of have the best of both: designed encounters with the variety and chaos of horde mode. Of course there were only six of them…

I was with you right up until you mentioned Vanquish ;p

3 guardians, 9 guns and waves of horrific enemies

Screw the raid, I want to wear the beasts in PoE face as my next cape or die trying

Crota's End was solo-able from the onset. Hell, Crota was so different from Vault of Glass it is a bit stretching it when you say you know what to expect from a 3rd Raid. Well, at least not more than what you can say you expect from Prison of Elders.

I think that's a sign of how disinterested most Destiny players are in another raid. They'd rather see something, ANYTHING else. They don't need to know anything about Prison of Elders... It's not a Raid, so that's good enough for them.

I don't think the poll points to anything in particular. We know nothing about the Raid we might have lost and we know nothing about the mode we are gaining. Maybe it was the niche appeal of the first two Raids that caused Bungie not to do a third... but we've also been promised another Raid... so maybe not! Really, using this poll as a basic of speculation is more like the projecting of ones' own feelings about the Raids. This would have been a better poll if they'd waited until after some details about the Prison of Elders was released, in my opinion.

It's a lot easier to get two other people to do a thing with you than five.

People raise good points about not knowing what the new Prison of Elders is, or what the new Raid would have been, but it's really much more simple.

In fact, I'm more looking forward to this mode than a Raid; I like the Raids, moreso the Vault, and I like Raiding with folks from here, but something that's easier to hop into sounds like it has its own appeal. For when I want to Raid, the other two Raids still exist.

Yep. It'll be neat to have a new mode to play. And more Raids will come eventually as well. :)

Nobody mentioned what the poll said when they saw it. Based on contact clues it seems like maybe Raid is making a comeback? Anyway, sample size, selection bias, etc.
