Vanquisher VIII - The best AR that nobody talks about? (Destiny)
A few days ago, I decided to look through the weapons for sale at the New Monarchy vendor. I spotted the Vanquisher VIII and decided to look at its specific perk roll:
First of all, look at the perks:
* Spray and Play (faster reloads when the clip is empty)
* Fitted Stock (better stability, on top of the already-decent base stability)
* Glass Half Full (bottom half of the clip does bonus damage).
2nd of all, LOOK AT THE IMPACT RATING.
That's roughly as high as Suros Regime, which hits substantially harder than the majority of Auto Rifles in Destiny.
On paper, this looks like a beast of an AR for PvE. Has anyone out there actually purchased this specific version, with this combo of perks? I'm thinking of taking the plunge and buying it, but I'd love to hear from anyone who has actually used it.
Thanks!

Nobody talks about this gun?
A cursory search for vanquisher on this forum.

The nerf killed autorifles for me.
I loved Destiny's Autorifles. I have a Shingen-E sitting in my vault that I destroyed with in my early days of crucible, and kept me company while patrolling until Xur sold the Suros.
But now...
The TTK for every AR is just Too. Damn. Long.
Seriously, when it takes anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 of a clip to bring down a single grunt enemy... what's the point?
Sorry. I get passionate about this stuff. Here's a Vanquisher roll I got from a Nightfall a few weeks ago:

I haven't purchased the vendor version, but I had one drop with Hip Fire (bonus accuracy when not ADS), Hammer Forged (improved range/accuracy), and Crowd Control (Kills grant bonus damage). I normally only play with Raid weapons/Exotics, but I hung onto this one.
Of course now I wish I'd kept Shadow Price in case there's a way to upgrade it to 365...
Yeah man...
I mean, 2.6% damage nerf, that's like half as much damage as normal, right?
[/s]
I still use auto rifles on occasions, and honestly notice no difference, but I switched to scout rifles before the nerf because the SR fits my play style better.

The Vanquisher and UfA are still my top weapons in Crucible
And that's even after taking up Bad Juju through some intensive PvPing.

Try Again.

That 2.6% stat is complete bull.
At launch, at mid-range, Suros could do 43 Crit in Crucible.
After the first nerf, this was lowered to 36. (~16% lower than launch)
After the second nerf, this was lowered to 31. (~14% lower than the first nerf, ~28% lower than launch)

Try Again.
2.6% applied to the assault rifles as a whole; it was made proportional to fire rate, and was worse for the slower ones.
Funnily enough, with my Saharatypes, the nerf feels worse than 2.6%, even though it should logically be a lot less, to balance with SUROS and co.
I guess that's because of every single bullet getting nerfed? Now that I think about it, it did sting worse in PvE by quite a bit...
I'm used to it now, but it wasn't negligible, even on the archetype it ostensibly hit the least.

I got a vanquisher as a random drop (my first legendary actually if I remember correctly) back when Destiny first came out. Has grenadier (kills recharge nades faster) and field scout. It was my go to weapon in crucible for a long time. I don't play crucible much anymore but I always really liked that gun.
I may have to pull it out of the vault and give it another try.

I've still got a Shadow Price with Feeding Frenzy, Field Scout, and Glass Half Full. It's got the same base stats as the Vanquisher. It was great in crucible until the nerfs. It just can't compete with the pulse rifles and hand cannons now. I'm holding onto it in hopes that they buff it back up and have a way to upgrade the attack.
My mistake, I misread your Subject line.

I thought you said the nerf killed auto rifles, not multiple nerfs killed SUROS. My mistake :)
And there is no arguing that Suros does less damage now than is used to, but also half my deaths in the crucible aren't to that single weapon. Overall, that particular AR is simply not "the only option" for crucible, but is instead a more balanced one.

I have this
I purchased the vendor roll and it was pretty great until the AR nerf. Now it just sits in my vault in case they buff them again. It can't compete with Hand Cannons nor Pulse Rifles in PVP anymore unfortunately.

I have it. Video post nerf.
Start at 50 seconds, watch for a minute.
I saved up crucible marks during the first two iron banners to buy this as soon as the DLC came out. Luckily, it was still there. I used it until I could upgrade my Suros to 331, and then quite a bit afterwards on my third character, one I don't normally play, so I didn't have to switch guns around between dudes.
I still keep it on him, but after running this video, I split my shotguns and main guns more effectively, so I almost never have to use it.
Unfortunately, the nerf killed it. It is undoubtedly the second best auto rifle easily obtainable in the game, but sucks now. The high impact guns got much worse.
If I were you, I'd buy TFWPKY or The Chance from FWC. Both of these are now better than that Vanquisher, if you like Hand Cannons. If you like auto rifles, use the Mythoclast, Suros, or an auto pulse rifle. If none of these are available, THEN use the vanquisher.

I don't know if it sucks.
It's just not the best gun in the crucible anymore.

Or in PvE. But yeah, not suck, just "meh"

I have one with glass half full (so quite suros -y) and reactive reload and before the expansions and even after in pop I used it a lot but now it's a 300 level auto rifle so it just does not get the job done post AR nerf.

I have it. Video post nerf.
Auto pulse rifles make up for auto rifles now. I'm loving Oversoul Edict. I was running auto rifles on my titan, but now I just hook him up with any auto pulse rifles I come across.
Except for Bad Juju. That always belongs to my voidwalker.

Vanquisher VIII - The best AR that nobody talks about?
I don't have a Vanquisher but I have an Up For Anything that I can just own people with in conjunction with my Sunsinger. I think it's something about the way the quick repeated strikes knock people's aim around + the easy to use firebolt grenades and their burning effect that makes kills almost trivial to get at certain ranges...
One gun that surprised me with how terrible it was in the Crucible was Hard Light! I pulled it from my vault the other day and I couldn't get a kill with it. It seems stable and fires quick but I gave up after half a game. Perhaps that gun needs just a bit of a nudge to at least bring it more in line with the stopping power of a Vanquisher or Up For Anything?

I guess its Impact is just too damn low. The best you can get out of it is probably surprising fools inside a Ward of Dawn. :p

Vanquisher VIII - The best AR that nobody talks about?
I dunno if nobody talks about it (they do), but it is pretty impressive. When I use ARs, I heavily favor the harder-hitting types - I still have a Shadow Price sitting in my vault that I can't bear to get rid of. Vanquisher might be the most extreme example of that archetype I've seen, other than Suros Regime. At least among the legendary ARs I have, it's got the highest impact and range, and not by a small margin. It's only outclassed on those stats by Suros (again, just among what I've got).
Mine came with persistence, fitted stock, and crowd control. I don't recall the name of the scope I'm using, but it's one of those that's labeled "highest zoom in class." Needless to say, it's my go-to AR if I need one with range. Even though the range stat isn't as high as Suros, in practical use that scope means it can land precision shots farther away.

Iconicbanana and I had lots to say about it
This thing is a PvP beast, and as iconic pointed out, we just talked about it a few weeks ago. Not quite as stable as Suros Regime, but it does mean you can use an exotic in a different slot and still get plenty of AR kills.

Truth!
