Is anyone else underwhelmed by the Scorch Cannon? (Destiny)

by petetheduck, Saturday, May 16, 2015, 21:27 (3723 days ago)

I feel like I do less damage with a Scorch Cannon than without. I ignore them now.

Now, if the wolf packs dropped Swords, I'd be all over that. But these.. I'm concerned that Bungie is trying to make a big deal out of them and they're actually meh.

Yes I know about the trigger hold/charged shot.

The big problem is that they don't do Arc damage

It makes it incredibly difficult to do damage to the shielded captains. Once my teammates whittle those down, they're pretty devestating.

I was underwhelmed until I figured out the mechanics of it. I like the sticky charged shot and how a longer charge means more destruction. I wouldn't call it a big deal, but it's fun, on par with the Hive swords. Now if they would just bring those swords back, Destiny would be pretty close to being the crazy playground it seems to want to be.

I'm not positive the charge actually increases damage. I see numbers like mid-3000s whether I fire and let go, or fire and hold for several seconds.

I once got 11k+ for letting it go over the third threshold and blowing itself up.

DPS sucked, though, because it took a very long time to get there.

Even when fully charged to level 3, Im still seeing 3000-ish damage. I've been operating under the assumption that it's a blast radius increase?

Might have been a yellow ebemy though. Do they take reduced damage?

That 11k+ was on the bounty target of the Ember Caves. Also, I let it blow up by itself. I didn't let the trigger go.

Yes, yellow-bar enemies take less damage from any given attack than the normal red-bar equivalents.

I know they take less damage from Secondaries and Heavies, but I thought they take normal damage from Primaries? Body shots I mean. Obviously headshots do less damage because they have double head armour compared to normal enemies.

I never knew about the head armor thing. My statement was actually only based on primaries, I've tested it with several different kinds of primaries on yellowbar enemies at levels 6 and 20, and probably some others I forgot.

Technically red-health enemies have half armour rather than the other way around, but that's just semantics.

I wonder when they changed Primaries to do less? I haven't tested it since the first week or so, and had been under the impression it was still true. If Im right and it was patched, that's exactly the kind of thing it would have been good to read in the patch notes, Bungie.

Yeah I meant to note that. If you fire and don't let go, there's some impact damage, and the rocket sticks to whatever it hit, and then you hear some rising beeps, then they stop, then more rising beeps, then they stop, etc. It seems during or after each set of rising beeps the damage increases.

I experimented with this a little more and I think Vaguness is right. There seemed to be three distinct tiers of rising beeps, and then it just holds at the last tier. That last tier is where I was seeing damage numbers like what ZackDark described.

There's a visual cue too, the rocket (or whatever you want to call it) glows brighter after each set of rising beeps.
What's unexpected and kind of impressive to me is the enemies seem to know what's going on-- after the first or second set of beeps, most of them will hunch over and stop moving, like they're trying to protect their allies from the explosion they know is coming.

On its own it's not so great, but if you've got someone else to take down the Captain's shields while the round charges, it does a TON of damage when it goes off.

It's absolute crap at hurting enemies while they're still shielded, though.

It's like a low impact rocket launcher. Works out to being a huge benefit.

I'm really enjoying it. The fun for me comes from trying to work out how to get the most damage from the the thing. I like to stick the main guy and try to survive long enough to charge it up fully before detonation. It feels as fun as the plasma launcher and the grenade launcher from Reach. Neither of which were the most practical thing for me to pick up but always the most fun!

I keep seeing people complain that it's not as good as their Gjallarhorn, which makes me chuckle. It's 10 Free rockets. Use it, thenwaste your heavy ammo.

Protip: Shoot one at the ground under a ship and charge it until a group lands. You can wipe a whole wave out like that.

I was wondering what the AoE damage was like; I'll have to try that out. :)

Yes

Used it twice. Stopped even looking for one after. Honestly, the bounties themselves aren't even that fun beyond abusing chest drops, and that's gonna get old fast.
