Feature added: GIFV Support (DBO)
In order to prevent more massive GIFs from appearing in the forum, we've added two tags for embedding GIFV formats from Imgur: [gifv]
and [gifvfull]
.
If your video lives at http://i.imgur.com/NosbAcq.gifv (thanks, UnrealCh13f), then you can embed it in your post with either of the following:
Just the unique identifier: [gifv]NosbAcq[/gifv]
- or -
The full URL: [gifvfull]http://i.imgur.com/NosbAcq.gifv[/gifvfull]
Either way, the result will be like this:

You Guys SUCK!
Losing all your teammates, can't revive--GTFO NUBBIN
Heh. Sorry. ^.^
That's a good idea for GIF's. Will there be thumbnail options like with the still images? Some GIFs are enormous in dimensions too, not just filesize.

This is the best! And I have the perfect thing...

I don't see myself using this at all.

A clarification

I've ranted about GIFV before, so I'll try to keep this short. Imgur (who introduced GIFV), has chosen terrible and erroneous terminology for what is essentially a default, native HTML5 video player. When you upload a video file to Imgur, they convert it into a few different formats:
- MP4
- WebM
- GIF
The MP4/WebM files are just regular video formats used in HTML5 <video>
tags. The GIF is an animated GIF image. Normally, you'd always want to use a native <video>
element, but browser support for <video>
was pretty limited/inconsistent until somewhat recently. Nowadays, however, <video>
is very reliable (YouTube has changed to this by default rather than the old Flash player method).
The benefit for GIF is that you don't need any special tags for it to work; a plain 'ol <img>
tag will display the GIF in any old browser just fine. The problem with animated GIFs, however, is that, in addition to terrible image quality, the files are simply MASSIVE. As in ridiculously huge. This is because animated GIFs were never intended to be videos.
What Imgur has done—and I think this was a very poor, marketing-based decision on their part—is to mask the MP4/WebM videos behind a ".gifv" filename. Here's the important part: There is no actual file format for GIFV, it's just an HTML5 document with <video>
tags. That's it. The whole thing is a big lie.
Right now, there's no native way to disable preloading of a video hosted on Imgur (although I'm looking to see if I can fix that), so please mark your threads with *VID* tags (or the like). The video dimensions seem to be locked at 720x404, so that's what the forum will display for now.

Please…
._. You have no idea what you have wrought against yourselves.
…be courteous and at least mark your videos with *VID* tags. There's no way to avoid preloading the videos right now (one more terrible decision by Imgur), so posts can eat bandwidth like crazy if you're not careful.

I expected as much. This is why I didn't have a mass of .gifv in that last post.
But now I shall test... * Ahem *
Neat! :D
I do see this being used in some sort of fancy review sort of thing, or just to show a money shot of something awesome. It's cool.
You should also probably put that rule up in the main post as well.

Done, thanks for the reminder.

Thanks Beorn
I try to just link to videos most of the time. I don't know all the in's and out's of running a forum, but I'm assuming they use up valuable storage space. Plus, I don't have to worry about causing loading issues and remember to put the #vid in my subject.

Nope! Using the [img]
[youtube]
and [gifv]
tags just makes a reference to wherever the resource is hosted. No extra storage or anything here!
Plus, I don't have to worry about causing loading issues and remember to put the #vid in my subject.
That, however, is always good to keep in mind. :) YouTube is at least helpful enough to not load any video until *after* you click the "play" button, so those embeds are lightweight. Imgur, on the other hand, just loads the video no matter what, which is just lame on their part.

People don't need to worry about forgetting. As someone with a limited bandwidth cap I solemnly swear to nag the heck out of anyone abusing this feature. :)

Just wondering
How hard it'd be to add *VID* automatically to posts that contain the tag?
![Avatar](images/avatars/66.png)
Bets on how fast it'll be a thing here, gentlemen
My bet is within the next day

Now we just need support for ytmnd.
Not really, but remember that site? It was the best.
If you've never been to ytmnd, please, make sure to turn down the volume, because it will immediately begin playing.

That's my favorite one. :)

I think I made one related to Subnova's constant netsplits.
Nowhere near as good as this one.

Second best YTMND:
Mine was pretty lame, had the Benny Hill song and a screenshot of a netsplit.
EDIT: found it.

Does it have to be tagged as *VID*
Why not *GIFV*?
Oh yeah, I guess I did tag this as vid... Uhh... UHHH...
Oh yes, here we go.
