Seems I'm not the only one who has problems with Prison of Elders' reward system:
Some interesting suggestions here. I don't personally agree with every point, but I think the overall message is fairly on point.
One specific topic I found interesting: the article suggests replacing armor and weapon cores with "queens armor or weapon engrams". The point is to add more randomness into the rewards, so you don't end up with all players having the exact same new armor and weapons each week. The proposed engrams would be guaranteed to yield gear from the Queen/PoE loot pool, so you'd always get something.
I'm a bit torn on this suggestion. The fact that I can look at this week's rewards and decide if I want to invest the time to earn them is one of the few things I like about PoE's rewards system.
Thoughts?
I didn't get an exotic the first or second time I opened the big loot chest. One of the small chests dropped my 15th or so Dragon's breath (Dear Bungie, please make this launcher leave a trail of flame on the map when fired, so I can use it in stead of the mandatory GH).
PoE has very consistent and flexible rewards, which I approve. If I don't like the armor this week I can save my core and wait for the next refresh, I can save cores from other characters and load up one character or I can randomize it with the chance option.
This system is better then the total randomness of VoG, which still hasn't given me a full set of armor or the fusion rifle. It even beats out CE, which was much improved over VoG even though it never dropped the ships or sparrows for me.
If anything I would love to have some more customization over the armor purchased. I'm a hand cannon guy and I'd like to be able to get the HC/fusion rifle perk and then some super/melee recharge boosts rather then pulse rifle/sniper/armor combos. I'd also like to avoid having four sets of armor, one for each race.
The drop rates for the keys are a bit low. I'd like an option for the first run to not require a key, but subsequent runs would. I'd also like weapons that do bonus damage to captains instead of stupid shanks, but that is hardly deal breaking.
if anything, my main gripe about PoE is that the "bullet hell" gripe going around. At the higher levels Wizards/Knights/Minotaurs/Captains all spam shots so fast it is almost a continuous stream. You are forced into cover with minimal movement much of the time, which is dull and makes the FoE and Arc Blade pretty useless.

Guaranteed Exotics?!?

I wasn't sure about that "guaranteed exotic" bit either, although I did get 3 exotics from my first 3 chests (1 with each character).
I agree that the raid loot drops can be infuriating at times (they seem to refuse to drop the item you're hoping for). PoE's system of guaranteed rewards(purchases) has it's benefits. I think where PoE's rewards system fails is in the treasure keys, and the quality of the rewards themselves. The raid weapons are some of the very best in the game. Awoken/Fallen gear... not so much.

Guaranteed Exotics?!?

My first time I did POE I did the MM one and didn't expect anything awesome to happen, because I assumed the rewards for a lvl 28 would be paltry.
I was shocked then, when I did the lvl 32 run that I only got a queens wrath weapon.
I did another run later, used another key, and got coins and motes.
The reset this week, on my first chest, I didn't get another exotic.
So I don't think it is guaranteed either, and I don't think it resets your chances every week.
I'll have to run my Hunter through it and see if he gets something exotic for his first ever attempt and report back.

Guaranteed Exotics?!? Definitely not.

I got an exotic on my first key chest opening (Red Death). I have not gotten an exotic since in 2 more key chest opens with that character and 1 with another character.

I've gotten four exotics from the big chest

Three of them were Plan C.

I completely disagree with adding more randomness to the loot. Having a guaranteed reward *and knowing ahead of time if you want it* is a nice breath of fresh air in this game.

That's the way I'm leaning as well. I like the idea of knowing what I will get out of an activity so I can decide if it is worth the time investment or not (to me).

Agreed. Having the listed reward for the different PoE levels + the decent random bonus rewards works pretty well, in my opinion. :)

It does seem like a decent foundation. I think they just need to iron out the details. They treasure keys are a real problem to me. The PoE rewards just don't seem to be worth the effort to me, unless you have a key going in, especially since you can only earn the drops once per week.
I did some informal twitter polling, and most people who replied have received very few keys since HoW launched. Some have done very well, but only because they've dedicated many hours to farming them. Personally, I haven't found any since HoW launched, despite finding somewhere between 20-30 chests and hitting each one 2-4 times.
Maybe the trick is to let us open the big chest once per week (per character) without a key? That might help bring the rewards a bit more in line with the other top level activities.

I think the rewards are fine and that people are getting too enamored by the big locked chest. I get Strange Coins and Motes of Light every run which just let me buy most of the new Exotics I wanted this morning and have let me reforge half a dozen weapons with no chance of running out of materials. I routinely get Legendary weapons and have from time to time gotten an Exotic from PoE, without having a Treasure Key. Am I getting an exotic per PoE run? Nope. But then I don't get that anywhere else either. Not Nightfall, not Raids, and certainly not ToO!
You're getting Legendaries without a key?
by someotherguy, Hertfordshire, England, Friday, May 29, 2015, 17:08 (3708 days ago) @ Ragashingo
I didn't know that was a thing.
I personally feel like all the PoE Wolf guns are pretty mediocre. The Fusion Rifle is okay, and the LMG and AR aren't terrible, but the majority are not guns I'd be keeping if they weren't unique.

All the time.

I'm also 99% sure I got a MIDA Multi-Tool from one of the small chests too. But Legendaries, absolutely.
This has never happened to me. Jealous.

Do note that I played a ton of PoE to rank up to buy the ships. Like 50+ games. I think I got one or maybe two small chest Exotics in that time.

RNG is strange. My youngest son did PoE 28 and got a treasure key from the chests at the bottom of the well on his first run. I told him not to expect that to happen again. He got a key every time for the next 3 runs. I wish I had some of that kids luck. I'd be in Vegas right now. He was shocked when the chests stopped giving him keys.
I've gotten one key from the wolf pack chests, but I've done alright with legendaries from them.
