Don't ignore the VIP target.
My fireteam took what feels like an infinitude of tries to finally beat this week's lvl34 PoE.
On one of the most successful runs, we killed the VIP within 3 seconds of his arrival on the final checkpoint. Still counted as failure.
On another run, we actually killed Kalikis before the VIP could reach it. The bastard still managed to make Varikis announce failure AND kill our last two living Guardians. Counted as a wipe, even though the modifier cleared (what I had always assumed to be a sign of success).
I recommend just going in and shooting everything.
I died a bunch but the other two guys poked that purple eyeball out. I think we wiped once maybe? Just shoot everything like crazy. Use those jellyhorn things that everybody but I have.

It's just that those damn sacrifice Dregs are too strong for us, so we were putting out as much damage as once on Kalikis as possible. Black Hammers and Gjallarhorns all over the damn orb.
Later on, I got adds duty while they pounded Kalikis, which was when we made it.
