I don't get it... How do they know they're going to lose? (Destiny)

I haven't played too much ToO, but the last run we did we had two matches where the other team backed out while the initial load was happening. How does this equate to that team somehow getting to Mercury? We got a win credited both times... Even if they didn't get a loss, they have no idea whether or not they're going to be able to beat us when the game is still loading.

You can see the team you've been matched against during the loading (ships flying) screen. They appear in your fireteam. If the inspected you and thought you looked dangerous, they have time to back out before the game starts.
