Personal Reset (Destiny)

by Mid7night ⌂ @, Rocket BSCHSHCSHSHCCHGGH!!!!!!, Tuesday, June 09, 2015, 13:30 (3696 days ago)

TLDR: I’m taking (at least) a week off from Destiny.

I’m tired.

The true Endgame of Destiny is the fact that there IS NO ENDgame. You play patrols to complete bounties to rank up gear to play higher level content to get higher/better rewards that need to be ranked up….Let me say for the record that I know this is not new information; the loot treadmill is well known. Last night though, it got to me.

Last night was “The Straw”…
I was playing my 2nd Alt to rank him up to Iron Banner-3 for one more Etheric Light, which thanks to all the buffs actually went fairly well, but still took several hours. Finally, I had enough rep and bounties to push over Rank-3, so I headed to the Tower. Then…. Nothing. My ISP must have decided that 1am was a good time for maintenance because no amount of rebooting or restarting hardware or software on my end restored my internet connection (which was in fact working just fine again when I got up at 6:45 this morning). I couldn’t get reconnected before the reset. On top of that, I had stayed up WAY too late for how early I have to start work every morning.

Three hours of Iron Banner – Wasted. No, the “play is its own reward” argument is not enough to redeem itself here because the only reason I was playing Iron Banner was to rank up for Etheric Light. If I wanted to just play for fun I would not be in Iron Banner (I wouldn’t be playing Crucible at all “just for fun”, for that matter). It’s literally akin to playing level 34 or 35 PoE for 3 hours, only to get booted and loose all progress. In either case you’re playing for 1 Etheric Light, and one connection glitch can cause it to be completely lost with no path for recovery.

This is not the reason I’m taking a week off. It may be the proverbial straw, but it’s not the camel. On the whole, my game-time/everything-else balance is off. Even though I only play a couple hours a night, which is low in my opinion of the gaming world; it’s too much. It’s taking focus away from my family, which in reality has a WAY better long-term rewards system, and I want – nay, NEED to invest more time there. My wife has been trying to open my eyes to this for months, and I’ve relented a few times, but it hasn’t stuck. Last night though, it sunk in. The loot treadmill will still be there next week (or next month, or next expansion…), and I’ll still have fun whenever I log back in (because despite this rant, I do in fact have fun playing Destiny); but with God’s help I will do my best to bring balance to the forces in my life – and right now that means disconnecting the Xbox for a while.

I’ll still check in and follow along here – y’all are a fun bunch – but you won’t find me on XboxLive for at least a week. I’ll see you when I see you.

Totally understand the need for a break and you intentions are cearly in the right place.

I do agree that POE can be a time sink especially on 34/35 if you can't finish. That does suck and I hope bungie can implement a system to help players enjoy POE more. (I've stayed away from most of the higher level POE content)

Anyways, enjoy your break, reconnect with the family and I hope you do stay around here! Sounds like we'll have some fun stuff to talk about durring E3!

I've avoided the upper lvl PoE stuff too. Only 2 lvl 34's, one of which was a failure. No 35. It just doesn't really interest me a ton, but I'm really glad it exists. Each weekly reset, there are so many options of things to do across three characters. I can just pick what I want and never have that feeling of I need to complete x,y,z that I used to have before the HoW launched.

I'd compare it to a single meal vs a buffet. I'm bad about always eating everything on my plate regardless of whether I'm full. I paid for it, so I'm not gonna waste it. But when I buffet, I can grab what I want and when I'm full I just stop. I do realize that for some people having the buffet is the opposite effect for them.

The timing here is amusing. I played last night for the first time in a week. Took my own break because I'm noticing the same thing.

I began to notice how I NEEDED to play everyday to keep pushing towards getting my gear upgraded. I've been one of the 1 percenters around here in regards to gear/level, but it's starting to wear me out. I'm still gonna play, but I'm gonna try my best to reduce my gaming time.

BTW, is it possible to play Destiny for only a few minutes? I've noticed that even logging on to do a simple thing can eat up an hour.

- CC Good luck, Mid7night!

Yeah buddy. On many occasions I've hopped on to pickup and store some Vanguard bounties and then hop right off.

I prefer to pick up the easy one's and let them pile up, so when I do the nightfall for the week I cash in like, 12 bounties haha.

This works great for me, because by playing once a week I'm not earning gear faster than I can level it. So if I run the nightfall and get a new sweet gun or a reward package with new armor, I just equip it, cash the bounties, and bam, it's leveled.

Then I'm done until the next Tuesday, unless we raid Thursday :)

That's it. Once or twice a week, for 2-3 hours each. That's the most I want\try to play.

But how will you spend all that Spirit Bloom? :p

I'm playing too much as well. Think it was the excitement for HoW that did it... upped game time to get new gear and now need to recalibrate.

You can get on for 30 minutes and do a nightfall or a couple trials matches. Given that you have all week, I think that for some stuff you can play in small spurts.

Smart move.

Family is important.

And if you're not having fun, you shouldn't be playing.

This is a good call - enjoy the wife and kid, we'll see you when you get back!

Have you considered using a Xurrogate?

by Mariachi @, Kentucky, Tuesday, June 09, 2015, 16:49 (3696 days ago) @ Mid7night

Should the need ever arise again, I'd be happy to log in for you and get your items. I've got a few friends that we do this for each other. That way if we're traveling or unable to connect for any reason, but theres something you need from a vendor, such as Xur, someone can help you get it.

For that matter, it does have to be me. Just find someone that you trust and set each other up as back ups. You can assist them when they can't reach the game in return.

Swimming in strange coins. You can go a week without, it won't hurt him.
