Vault space.Etheric light. Year 2 & obsolescence = Questions (Destiny)

by Revenant1988 ⌂ @, How do I forum?, Tuesday, June 16, 2015, 17:33 (3687 days ago)

So.

Etheric light. It is an in-game material\currency that can be used to ascend a weapon or piece of armor. The in-game description node for this says "Increases the Attack value of this weapon to the highest available in Year 1".

Year one.

This has me wondering where is Bungie going to go with this?

Loot, the pursuit and acquiring of it, is a big part of this game. (Yes, I know there are some altruistic folks here that play for the sake of play -God bless you- and this isn't really aimed at you.)

Vault space is a point of contention. Most players, have plenty. Some players, are running out for various reasons, some like to collect all the things, some simply have good luck and have many nice things they want to hold onto.

So what is Bungie to do?

How do you get people to continue to chase new loot, when the old \current loot they have is still plenty viable? In many cases, BETTER, than the new stuff....

Do you just give them more vault space? (something something last gen holing current gen back)

Do you make the new stuff so good that there is no reason to keep the old stuff?

Do you do a little of each? Or do you grease the wheels a bit, so to speak?

Alright Rev, cut the crap. What are you getting at?

My questions to you:

1.) Do you expect to be able to take your current, year 1 weapons with you to year 2?

If yes, Do you also expect those weapons to be competitive with new content? (do you think you'll be able to continually "ascend" to the new lvl caps?)

2.) How would you feel if you could take it with you, but you could NOT ascend it? (For example, lets say that TDYK you've been holding onto all this time, will never do damage higher than the current cap.)

3.) What if you are NOT able to take it with you? (for whatever reason)

4.) How does all of this make you feel about the time you've spent chasing after specific gear? The remote possibility that come September, or Destiny 2, that it could be forever obsolete, hindered by a level cap?

I'm asking these questions because I started asking myself: What if all the time I've spent working on these weapons, these armor builds, what if it doesn't matter once the sequel hits? Like, either the slate is wiped clean, or the old gear is held back in favor of new gear.

I don't subscribe to the notion that Destiny is a game where I must "collect" all the things, and they seem to be conditioning me anyway to get comfortable getting rid of stuff I'll never or seldom use, but what about the rest?

Players that held onto some of their favorite pre-DLC gear seem to have benefited quite a bit! Due to weapon balancing, perk availability and other game play tweaks, most older stuff has only appreciated in value. It would seem that, arguably, Bungie rewarded those players that held onto the stuff that fit their play style, even when it wasn't "the best" gear, it was still "best" but for them.

I wonder how long it will work that way?

Yes. No. (Except exotics)

2.) How would you feel if you could take it with you, but you could NOT ascend it? (For example, lets say that TDYK you've been holding onto all this time, will never do damage higher than the current cap.)

I wouldn't mind. I expect this.

3.) What if you are NOT able to take it with you? (for whatever reason)

That would be completely against Bungie's philosophy so far. I would be absolutely astonished. I also wouldn't mind.

4.) How does all of this make you feel about the time you've spent chasing after specific gear? The remote possibility that come September, or Destiny 2, that it could be forever obsolete, hindered by a level cap?

Part of the game. No worries. I had fun.

If yes, Do you also expect those weapons to be competitive with new content? (do you think you'll be able to continually "ascend" to the new lvl caps?)

Absolutely. You can see exotics from Year 1 in use in the videos they show. I imagine their plan is to always let exotics be ascended. Legendaries a little more up in the air, but I think certain guns will always be "competitive" especially since in PvP level doesn't matter (most of the time).

2.) How would you feel if you could take it with you, but you could NOT ascend it? (For example, lets say that TDYK you've been holding onto all this time, will never do damage higher than the current cap.)

For legendaries I wouldn't be heartbroken, but I felt like that when TDB came out too.

3.) What if you are NOT able to take it with you? (for whatever reason)

I'd be shocked. Wouldn't make any sense. This isn't a new game, it's an expansion.

4.) How does all of this make you feel about the time you've spent chasing after specific gear? The remote possibility that come September, or Destiny 2, that it could be forever obsolete, hindered by a level cap?

This is the nature of all ongoing RPGs. Not a big deal.

If yes, Do you also expect those weapons to be competitive with new content? (do you think you'll be able to continually "ascend" to the new lvl caps?)

Yes, I expect to be able to bridge the gap to new content. While I hope my fatebringer is always competitive in PvE, I don't expect it to last forever.

2.) How would you feel if you could take it with you, but you could NOT ascend it? (For example, lets say that TDYK you've been holding onto all this time, will never do damage higher than the current cap.)

I fully expect this

3.) What if you are NOT able to take it with you? (for whatever reason)

This would not make a lick of sense with how the game is currently designed.

4.) How does all of this make you feel about the time you've spent chasing after specific gear? The remote possibility that come September, or Destiny 2, that it could be forever obsolete, hindered by a level cap?

I will be sad if raid weapons are no longer a viable option. With that said, I am currently under the mindset that all vendor/faction gear will be a continually revolving door of good, but not always the best, gear.

1.) Do you expect to be able to take your current, year 1 weapons with you to year 2?

Yes. I don't really see how the answer to this would be no, unless I'm expected to believe that Bungie would just wipe our inventory clean when starting the game up after The Taken King comes out.

If yes, Do you also expect those weapons to be competitive with new content? (do you think you'll be able to continually "ascend" to the new lvl caps?)

I... hope so. I know Bungie understands that people don't want to leave their favorite gear behind. If they didn't get that, they wouldn't have introduced the ascend option in the first place - it was, in fact, specifically a result of them realizing what players wanted in that regard. I just hope they continue to keep it in mind.

2.) How would you feel if you could take it with you, but you could NOT ascend it? (For example, lets say that TDYK you've been holding onto all this time, will never do damage higher than the current cap.)

FUCK THAT

Does that answer your question?

3.) What if you are NOT able to take it with you? (for whatever reason)

Other than running out of vault space, I really don't see this happening. And I do believe Bungie's still working on more item storage options.

4.) How does all of this make you feel about the time you've spent chasing after specific gear? The remote possibility that come September, or Destiny 2, that it could be forever obsolete, hindered by a level cap?

I can't say that I really have spent much time working toward specific gear. There ARE some items I'd be disappointed to leave behind, though. Having just recently fallen back in love with TDYK, and all.

More so for an actual new game, than an expansion. I'll admit though, even that sounds like the same thing. I mean, for consoles a new game is going from Bioshock 1 to Bioshock 2, and an expansion would be Minerva's Den.

But Destiny is very WoW like. I suppose there is a possibility we won't see a new disc for Destiny, just continued digital expansions. Somewhat. Once last gen is gone, there will probably be a new release.

Can you imagine seeing next to some of your weapons "Year 10" ? Trippy.

Not exactly, because for you TDYK is a favorite gun, so I can't tell if you're just mad at the thought, or if you'd chuck it in the dumpster once the time came ;)

It's not just a possibility, it's exactly what they're doing. Somewhere in the interviews, they said it's going to be a $40 downloadable expansion for those who already have the game.

They are doing a disc that'll roll the original game, TDB, HoW, and The Taken King together, but that's only to make things easier/quicker for new players.

It means I'll be extremely annoyed. Whether I'd stop playing sort of depends on how many people I know who are still playing at that point.

I've only thrown one game in the garbage, and that was the original Need for Speed Underground, the worst racing game I've ever played. Side note: Need for Speed Underground 2 was one of the best, and the brand-new NFS game they're working on right now looks to be borrowing a lot from that one, which is fantastic.

So what is Bungie to do?

Worst case?

Have an overflow vault that is only accessible via browser and apps - organise your working set that way.

You have the current vault and the overflow - what wont fit can (oh work it out)

Of course it's not brilliant but so what?

  • it's a temporary hack to tide players over until last gen is ditched
  • it lets last gen people keep up until D day (Ditch day)
  • should be feasible to implement - it should be all (mostly) server side

let me start by saying that I am in no way a game developer or have the insight into what is going on behind the scenes.

When I think about games like Skyrim where I could have thousands upon thousands of items in a vault, or chests all over that store thousands of more items. I just don't get how vault space can be so limited in the world of Destiny. What exactly is it that causes the vault to be so limited?

It doesn't load in every time you press X, but when you pop in the tower, I think. Having that stuff available at any time by pressing X keeps it in the RAM, and the RAM can only hold so much stuff.

I'll get rid of my stuff if I can have...

by someotherguy, Hertfordshire, England, Tuesday, June 16, 2015, 19:28 (3687 days ago) @ Revenant1988

An in-game way to look back at it and appreciate it. Let me have a space in my ship/The Tower/whatever where I can see my collected Raid armours on a mannequin. Let me have a gun rack with my outdated Gjallarhorn and Monte Carlo in it, or my unused Dragon's Breath and NLB at least (never letting go of my Gjally).

I don't use those guns as it is, but I like that I've had these Exotics at one point. I'll move on and replace most of my Legendaries eventually, but "unique" weapons are more trophies than anything. Give me a trophy room.

I'll get rid of my stuff if I can have...

by DreadPirateWes, Tuesday, June 16, 2015, 20:44 (3687 days ago) @ someotherguy

Trophy room sounds good to me. It would be good for my addictive tendencies if they made me start over, which is exactly why I don't think they will make us start over. There's no way they will risk losing thousands of players like that.
