Destiny companion app (Destiny)
I got the companion app now that I have a smartphone.
Am I missing something? It's very hard to use functionally. The actual website is much much easier. Switching gear in and out is a pain, and destiny item manager does not work with mobile chrome.
In my opinion, DIM's interface, where you simply drag items around from character to character is perfect for a touch screen! Bungie should absolutely redesign their app to be more like DIM. I was hoping to just need my phone when I play and have to switch guns around, but it looks like I need my Macbook Pro after all.
Destiny Companion got deleted pretty fast.

No.
The primary purpose of the companion app isn't to move gear around, it is just a feature. I think it is fine.
There are many applications for iOS available, though, that are better at this.

What is a good one that works as well as DIM and has no ads?
My use case:
I want one gun or a single piece of armor that I thought was on my character and was not. This is case pops up frequently when I jump into a nightfall and am mistaken about the burns for that week :)
I rarely swap out an entire armor set and 6 guns.

Oh come now, it's not all that bad. I imagine the drag-n-drop interface requires a bit more screen real estate than smartphones have available. Just one guess.
For grabbing specific quantities of materials and moving them around, I find the app to be very useful. For moving several items from one character to another however, even the Web interface is cumbersome.
For moving stuff en mass, I use an iOS app called "Loadouts". You can select a bunch of items, regardless of where they reside, and send them a the same character. The takes care of all the swapping.. I you can even save preset loadouts (hence the name), and apply them with a single tap.

Tower Ghost.
I don't know how you get it, though. (I've got it, but I don't know how. I've been looking since you first posted about getting a phone.) They seem to be updating every few days, and it's getting better and better.
In a pinch Loadouts works, too, but the interface is inferior to Tower Ghost.
When it comes to getting info about what you have, the Destiny Companion is still superior to anything else on the phone. I would not have deleted it, but I know you seem to relish deleting stuff. Wish I had that tendency.

One more note: the drag-and-drop functionality of DIM would be very problematic on a phone, I think. The screen's not big enough. It always takes me a few tries to get things right whenever I reorganize my homescreen on the phone, for instance. It's much easier and less problematic to do actions like that on a desktop. Tower Ghost's implementation works well for a phone, and it's not drag and drop.

So... I'd kinda like to use one of these 3rd party apps but... I don't trust them. How do they safely interface with my Xbox Live and Bungie accounts? If something goes wrong and I lose items who would I be able to complain to? Maybe I'm just a bit paranoid but I'd rather be safe and know who to yell at than be able to move a few guns around a tiny bit quicker...

"Loadouts for Destiny" app
I use the "Loadouts for Destiny" app on my iPhone... It's great. Very easy to use, customizable loadouts, etc. might be worth a shot.

Simple fix:
Tap to highlight an item.
Scroll screen to where you want to place that item.
Tap where you want it to go.
Swipe left or right to move between characters / vault.

As far as I know, DIM doesn't even have any info from your bungie.net profile. That's why you have to log in on the site before you use it. All it's doing is sending commands that the website would send. There's zero risk of anyone taking your stuff, and the same risk of losing items that you face when you move them around on the website.
I'm totally fine moving my Gjallarhorn around with it.

Easier solution.
Use DIM's built in interface.
Tap item. Press character you want it to go to.

Same. I still try & avoid loading screens, tho' I've been successful moving mats while loading.

That's kind of how Tower Ghost works, except it has a pop-up at bottom that shows where you can move an item to. No scrolling or dragging, which are the problematic aspects.

I found out about Tower Ghost through a Bungie employee. They haven't had any documented case of anyone losing anything yet.

He wants it on a phone.

Good iPad app?
I know you can run any iPhone app on the iPad, but I would rather use the surface area on my iPad than my iPhone.

+1 for Tower Ghost
It's virtually identical to DIM, before they added drag+drop.
I hear DIM is creating their own app sometime in the future as well.

Yes, and I'm really looking forward to that.
Good iPad app?
We could just write one =)

My use case:
Yeah, same here. I use the Destiny companion for this type of thing, and it works well enough that I don't want to bother installing an additional app.
That's because I tend to leave certain weapons on certain characters, and rarely swap them unless I have a specific need for a given weapon. Scout rifles and hand cannons tend top stay on my Hunter, ARs tend to stay on my Titan, and so on.
I would probably use a 3rd-party app if any of them were actually capable of equipping a whole loadout at once. But as far as I've seen, you can only transfer a loadout to/from inventory and vault, which due to the reasons above, isn't particularly useful to me.
You get right on that :)
Maybe I'll chip in some support. My Mac dev environment would need the dust and rust cleaned off it though.

I've thought about this before...
If someone has the information on all the APIs involved I'd be willing to give it an evening or two. I'm a mobile developer by day.

I've thought about this before...
We could even put in an "Easter egg" that makes Cody's newly acquired Hawkmoon disappear for a period of time the first time he transfers it...

hawkmoon achievement in-app is "The Cody Miller". :D

I'm pretty sure that both Tower Ghost and Loadouts for Destiny enable you to save loadouts and load loadouts at will. I think there is a delay, in that only one item can be moved at a time, but that's a limitation on Bungie's end.

I've thought about this before...
Note that this spurred me to download loadouts for destiny and tower ghost. Tower ghost was a non-starter, I got a blank page that said "Hi" at the top. Loadouts looks pretty functional, would likely do what you needed. The interface is good, not great, that's my only complaint. Functionality is there.
Me too
I know some of the bungie APIs have docs, but I don't know about the inventory ones. Reverse-engineering is fun though, right?
I left a small iOS dev job of 3 years for Amazon, and kind of like the idea of a pet project.

Macbook Pro after all.
Macbook Pro
While a normal person might use the word "laptop" or "computer", the indigenous Cody needs to let people know that he owns not only a Macbook, but a Macbook Pro.

Careful there, you're allowed to beat up on Cody for many things, but not being a Mac user. A MacBook Pro isn't just a "laptop" or "computer", after all. :)

A rare but flamboyant beast. Can be spotted jumping out of airplanes, and looking askance at noobs or anyone else deemed "casual."

Am I dim...? What's DIM?!

Destiny companion app
I have only one screwdriver in my toolbox.

My use case:
If that's the case, it either wasn't implemented when I tried Tower Ghost, or the interface was pretty unintuitive. I guess I can try it again.

Destiny companion app
My concern for my destiny gear sits far below another fact.. These apps require me to log in to my Microsoft and Sony accounts - both of which have billing info and store privileges - with a portal they provide.

If I wanted to brag I'd have mentioned something other than a 4 year old laptop.

Phillips or Flathead?

...as a test environment! I can barely tread water in code, but I'm really good at breaking things! :)

App is terrible head to head vs the computer
But it is on your phone instead of computer... convenience.

just tried the DIM last night, love it! I hadn't heard of it until this thread.
