I did a quick search but didn't find much about this, but maybe it's been talked about in my year long absence.
Vehicles are a very small part of Destiny. I feel like most people wanted space combat (or at least I definitely did given how fun Long Night of Solace was!), but that didn't pan out.
The sparrow is nothing more than a fancy horse you ride from place to place.
So my question is why? Have they ever talked about it? How to do the people that created the Warthog, the best, most fun video game vehicle ever created, make a game with such a boring vehicle, and pretty much no fun vehicle combat segments?

I have several ideas about what this could be, but I'm scared to google it.

I always thought it was someone shrugging with an attitude. Now I'm not so sure. What were you thinking of?

I think it's supposed to be a "what can you do?" kind of shrug. That's my take. I am curious too what DPW thinks it could be haha, especially since he's afraid to google it! I promise it's nothing pornographic.

I think the first mission in HoW (with the heavy pike versus spider tank) is a sign that they've not entirely given up on vehicles, though we still never get any enemies using them. Heck, even the roving band of pikes focus on running away than on fighting.
I'd love to see more vehicle combat segments; I'd love to see the Cabal actually using interceptors, and I'd love it if existing vehicle combat sections were revamped to encourage movement.
Unfortunately, the Hive have no vehicles, so it looks like my wishes will have to wait until Destiny 2...

So not looking forward to a Taken Spider Tank....

It's simple why we don't: your gear doesn't factor in to play, and Destiny is loot driven. If levels can be completed by using vehicle guns, your gear matters less.
It's all for a reason :-p

Heh - now you're getting too cynical. ;)
(The House of Wolves actually has a mini-level with a Turret in it - first one I've seen in campaign. And whenever Heavy Pikes spawn in-game, I use them exclusively, just to see how far I can get. (I grabbed a damaged one today, and made it all the way to the Gatelord before some stupid Hobgoblin blew it up.)
What I'm saying is, I'm seeing MORE of them now than I've seen for a while, so I think your cynicism is unfounded. :)

So, that turret section lasts at most 1 minute. And the heavy pike section is a drive up and hill and then you fight a spider tank--which if you have any sense you'll dismount and use Black Hammer or Ice Breaker on it instead. Immediately after that first battle there is a vehicle barrier to prevent you from bringing it further. They've added a mysterious random trigger for a cave of Venus, which I've only seen it spawn once since the world update. And I've heard they're in a single pseudo public event on Venus which I've yet to encounter.
The integration of the heavy pike was done so poorly that I have actually questioned why they bothered adding it at all. It's not even in multiplayer. It exists in such a small fraction of the content that it is negligible.
Meanwhile, the weapons and armor they've added can be used in 100% of Destiny content. I'm with Cody. Vehicles are not a focus in Destiny. Sparrows are just fast travel.

I've used 3 separate heavy pikes in the past 2 days in Venus patrol. They show up a LOT if you're looking for them.

They spawn based on random triggers, so I don't see how "looking for them" can possibly impact their occurrences :/

RNG? I haven't thought of it the way Cody or Pete have (beyond the fact that the vehicle Crucible playlist is a joke), but I think I've only used the Heavy Pike twice to this point since they were first introduced to the game. I have actively looked for them on Venus, but no dice. Maybe someone else in the area had already grabbed one up at spawn? Do they have an insane respawn time? Or do they have to be destroyed to respawn? Do they even disappear if they're abandoned for a while?

Can confirm two Heavy Pikes in same instance is possible

Okay that's freaking awesome. Pete said the spawns are random, but do you know if other players having them impacts it? Or if they need to be destroyed after they've moved? I'd love to take those things out in Patrols, but I hardly come across them. Two would be even better since I'm usually patrolling in a party.

I'll have to start following you around in game. I've done 148 Patrols and I can count the times I've seen a Pike on one hand. Didn't even know a Heavy Pike was an option. :/

The Heavy Pike section at the start of House of Wolves was literally the funnest time I've ever had in a Destiny story mission. :/
I started the DLC and was surprised to see a new vehicle sitting in front of me. Hopped in and loved what happened next. It felt like classic Halo. I stayed in it the whole time fighting the spider tank and eventually started doing barrel rolls across the rocks as I spewed bouncing mines. I was laughing the whole time! As one Pike was destroyed I'd steal another to keep the fun going.
The way the level introduced that vehicle, the new tripmines, the rocket-launcher-thing-whose-name-I-can't-remember, and all the new enemies was great. Probably my favorite story mission so far. Didn't even notice it was a re-used area till the end. That's what I want all my future Destiny missions to be like.

I used to bypass the Chupathingy in the Maw and try run it all on foot. That doesn't make sense, but it is hella fun!
